Book Group Skills in Social Work

Download or read book Group Skills in Social Work written by Sue Henry and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 1992 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firmly based in social science literature and research, this basic practice text provides students with a good practical model of group growth and development that is easily comprehended and applied. The second edition is organized, as was the original, around the concept of skill as knowledge in action, with four dimensions of social work knowledge about groups and people in groups interacting and intersecting to dictate worker action to be taken. These four dimensions (stages and phases of group development, contract form in effect, role and location of worker vis-a-vis the group system, and program media utilized to enhance group social focus) are shown to apply in work with direct service groups as well as in groups beyond direct service (training boards, committees, task groups, etc.).

Book Trouble at Work

Download or read book Trouble at Work written by Ralph Fevre and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Trouble in the workplace - whether it is bullying, harassment or stress - is always in the headlines. Yet, in many discussions, the research and statistics that are cited prove unreliable. This book summarizes the largest specialist research programme on ill-treatment in the workplace so far undertaken. It provides a powerful antidote to half-truths and misinformation and offers a new way of conceptualizing trouble at work, moving the discussion away from individualized explanations - and talk of 'bullies' and 'victims' - towards the workplace characteristics that cause trouble at work. The biggest problems arise where organisations fail to create a workplace culture in which individuals really matter. Paradoxically, these are often the organizations which are well-versed in modern management practices.

Book The Origins of Worker Mobilisation

Download or read book The Origins of Worker Mobilisation written by Michael Quinlan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on how and why workers come together. Almost coincident with its inception, worker organisation is a central and enduring element of capitalism. In the 19th and 20th centuries’ mobilisation by workers played a substantial role in reshaping critical elements of these societies in Europe, North America, Australasia and elsewhere including the introduction of minimum labour standards (living wage rates, maximum hours etc), workplace safety and compensation laws and the rise of welfare state more generally. Notwithstanding setbacks in recent decades, worker organisation represents a pivotal countervailing force to moderate the excesses of capitalism and is likely to become even more influential as the social consequences of rising global inequality become more manifest. Indeed, instability and periodic shifts in the respective influence of capital and labour are endemic to capitalism. As formal institutions have declined in some countries or unions outlawed and severely repressed in others, there has been growing recognition of informal strike activity by workers and wider alliances between unions and community organisations in others. While such developments are seen as new they aren’t. Indeed, understanding of worker organisation is often ahistorical and even those understandings informed by historical research are, this book will argue, in need of revision. This book provides a new perspective on and new insights into how and why workers organise, and what shapes this organisation. The Origins of Worker Mobilisation will be key reading for scholars, academics and policy makers the fields of industrial relations, HRM, labour economics, labour history and related disciplines.

Book Re educating Troubled Youth

Download or read book Re educating Troubled Youth written by Larry K. Brendtro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about helping troubled young people who are searching separately for security, identity, and purpose in their lives. Childhood and adolescence are pivotal stages in the quest to belong, to become somebody, and to be worth something. Children need stimulation, affection, and guidance in order to develop their potentials, but many are reared in environments that deprive them of these nutriments. Adolescents approach the threshold of independence with only the experiences gained from childhood; many lack the support of significant actions. Those who encounter difficulty in navigating through these turbulent years are to be identified by society as troubled or troublesome. These children and youth present challenges that do not yield to simple panaceas. Although no simple approach holds all the answers, bridging various concepts of education and treatment offers the best opportunity for creating positive changes. The authors refer to this process as -re-education- with full awareness that this term has been used in a variety of philosophical contexts including behavioral, ecological, and psychodynamic views.
