However, data collected under this program will also allow for the evaluation of several remedial options, such as free product removal; bioventing for source removal; air sparging; and intrinsic remediation with long-term monitoring (LTM). This work plan was developed based on discussions among representatives from the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) Technology Transfer Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Wurtsmith AFB, and Parsons ES at a meeting at the Base on August 24, 1994.

As used in this report, the term "intrinsic remediation" refers to a management strategy that relies on natural attenuation mechanisms to remediate contaminants dissolved in groundwater and to control receptor exposure risks associated with contaminants in the subsurface. "Natural attenuation" refers to the actual physical, chemical, and biological processes that facilitate intrinsic remediation. Mechanisms for natural attenuation of BTEX include advection, dispersion, dilution from recharge, sorption, volatilization, and biodegradation. Of these processes, biodegradation is the only mechanism working to transform contaminants into innocuous byproducts. Intrinsic bioremediation occurs when indigenous microorganisms work to bring about a reduction in the total mass of contamination in the subsurface without the addition of nutrients.

(Parsons ES) at Site OT 24, MacDill Air Force Base (AFB, the Base), Tampa, Florida to evaluate the use of intrinsic remediation (natural attenuation) with long-term monitoring (LTM) as a remedial option for dissolved benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) contamination in the shallow saturated zone. Soil and groundwater contamination is documented for the site, with contamination being present in the aqueous (i.e., dissolved) and gaseous phases and as residual light nonaqueous-phase liquid (LNAPL) within the aquifer matrix. The presence of mobile LNAPL (free product) in the immediate vicinity of the contamination source area is also indicated at this site. This study focused on the impact of dissolved BTEX on the shallow groundwater system at and downgradient from the site. The impact of dissolved chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) such as vinyl chloride on the shallow groundwater system is also discussed. Site history and the results of soil, groundwater, and sediment investigations conducted previously are summarized in this report.

As suggested by this definition, mechanisms for natural attenuation of BTEX include advection, dispersion, dilution from recharge, sorption, volatilization, and biodegradation. Of these processes, biodegradation is the only mechanism working to transform contaminants into innocuous byproducts.

Book excerpt: Naturally occurring contaminant attenuation processes such as advection, dispersion, aerobic biodegradation, and anaerobic biodegradation can significantly enhance the rate of organic mass removal from contaminated groundwater aquifers. The Air Force and EPA are currently collaborating to research natural attenuation processes and develop natural attenuation as an effective remedial alternative for appropriate sites. At the Building 735 site at Grissom AFB, data from site investigations (Section 2) was used to conduct a natural attenuation Treatability Study (Section 3) that included special field sampling and analysis and groundwater modeling components. The results from this study were used to perform a baseline exposure assessment and Risk Assessment for the site (Section 4). Finally, all of these data were used to prepare a Focused Feasibility Study (Section 5) that evaluated three remediation alternatives for the site: 1) natural attenuation with institutional controls, 2) natural attenuation combined with continued operation of an existing bioventing/air sparging system; and 3) installation of an aquifer dewatering/soil vapor extraction system.

(Parsons ES) in the vicinity of Site FT0l at King Salmon Airport in King Salmon, Alaska to evaluate the use of intrinsic remediation with long-term monitoring (LTM) as a remedial option for dissolved benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) contamination in the shallow groundwater. Soil and groundwater contamination in the form of BTEX and trichloroethene (TCE) also was identified at the former radar approach control (RAPCON) site (southwest of Site FT01) during site characterization activities performed as part of this TS. Therefore, the RAPCON site was included as part of this TS, and dissolved TCE contamination was considered during the selection of remedial alternatives. Soil, groundwater, and surface water contamination associated with Site FT01 and the RAPCON site are collectively referred to as the "study area". This TS focused on the impact of dissolved BTEX and TCE on the shallow groundwater system at the study area and on a downgradient surface water body, Red Fox Creek. Site history and the results of soil and groundwater investigations conducted previously also are summarized in this report.
