Book Lexical Meaning

Download or read book Lexical Meaning written by M. Lynne Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideal introduction for students of semantics, Lexical Meaning fills the gap left by more general semantics textbooks, providing the teacher and the student with insights into word meaning beyond the traditional overviews of lexical relations. The book explores the relationship between word meanings and syntax and semantics more generally. It provides a balanced overview of the main theoretical approaches, along with a lucid explanation of their relative strengths and weaknesses. After covering the main topics in lexical meaning, such as polysemy and sense relations, the textbook surveys the types of meanings represented by different word classes. It explains abstract concepts in clear language, using a wide range of examples, and includes linguistic puzzles in each chapter to encourage the student to practise using the concepts. 'Adopt-a-Word' exercises give students the chance to research a particular word, building a portfolio of specialist work on a single word.

Book Semantics of Word Formation and Lexicalization

Download or read book Semantics of Word Formation and Lexicalization written by Pius ten Hacken and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the study of word formation, the focus has often been on generating the form. In this book, the semantic aspect of the formation of new words is central. It is viewed from the perspectives of word formation rules and of lexicalization. An extensive introduction gives a historical overview of the study of the semantics of word formation and lexicalization, explaining how the different theoretical frameworks used in the contributions relate to each other. Each chapter then concentrates on a specific question about a theoretical concept or a word formation process in a particular language and adopts a theoretical framework that is appropriate to the study of this question. From general theoretical concepts of productivity and lexicalization, the focus moves to terminology, compounding, and derivation. Theoretical frameworks discussed include Jackendoff's Conceptual Structure, Langacker's Cognitive Grammar, Lieber's lexical semantic approach to word formation, Pustejovsky's Generative Lexicon, Beard's Lexeme-Morpheme-Base Morphology, The onomasiological approach to terminology and word formation.

Book The Generative Lexicon

Download or read book The Generative Lexicon written by James Pustejovsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998-01-23 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first formally elaborated theory of a generative approach to word meaning, The Generative Lexicon lays the foundation for an implemented computational treatment of word meaning that connects explicitly to a compositional semantics. The Generative Lexicon presents a novel and exciting theory of lexical semantics that addresses the problem of the "multiplicity of word meaning"; that is, how we are able to give an infinite number of senses to words with finite means. The first formally elaborated theory of a generative approach to word meaning, it lays the foundation for an implemented computational treatment of word meaning that connects explicitly to a compositional semantics. In contrast to the static view of word meaning (where each word is characterized by a predetermined number of word senses) that imposes a tremendous bottleneck on the performance capability of any natural language processing system, Pustejovsky proposes that the lexicon becomes an active—and central—component in the linguistic description. The essence of his theory is that the lexicon functions generatively, first by providing a rich and expressive vocabulary for characterizing lexical information; then, by developing a framework for manipulating fine-grained distinctions in word descriptions; and finally, by formalizing a set of mechanisms for specialized composition of aspects of such descriptions of words, as they occur in context, extended and novel senses are generated. The subjects covered include semantics of nominals (figure/ground nominals, relational nominals, and other event nominals); the semantics of causation (in particular, how causation is lexicalized in language, including causative/unaccusatives, aspectual predicates, experiencer predicates, and modal causatives); how semantic types constrain syntactic expression (such as the behavior of type shifting and type coercion operations); a formal treatment of event semantics with subevents); and a general treatment of the problem of polysemy. Book A Valency Dictionary of English

Download or read book A Valency Dictionary of English written by Thomas Herbst and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary provides a valency description of English verbs, nouns and adjectives. Each entry contains a comprehensive list of the complementation patterns identified on the basis of the largest corpus of English available at the present time. All examples are taken directly from the COBUILD/Birmingham corpus. The valency description comprises statements about the quantitative valency of the lexical units established, an inventory of their obligatory, contextually optional and purely optional complements as well as systematic information on the semantic and collocational properties of the complements. An outline of the model of valency theory used in this dictionary is provided in the introduction.

Book Contrastive Analysis of English and Polish Surveying Terminology

Download or read book Contrastive Analysis of English and Polish Surveying Terminology written by Ewelina Kwiatek and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, with a focus on English and Polish, is a study of surveying terminology, which may be considered as an under-researched area when compared to legal, medical or business terminologies. It examines differences between terms and concepts in the two languages. The purpose of the book is three-fold: firstly, to investigate how surveying terms are created and how they are named in English and Polish; secondly, to analyse concept systems of the two languages with respect to surveying terminology; and thirdly, to indicate the areas of surveying in which terminological and conceptual differences occur, the factors that trigger them and translation strategies which are used to solve them. The book offers a systematic, corpus-based approach to terminology. Data for analyses come from the English and Polish surveying corpora compiled specifically for this project. The author of the book attempts to provide a wide picture of surveying terminology by looking at problems that diversified groups of users may identify. The book is directed towards terminologists and lexicographers, for whom it provides a set of guidelines on how to enrich the content of surveying dictionaries, translators and technical writers, who may find information on how to deal with conceptual mismatches, and to specialists in the surveying field, who are interested in finding equivalents for problematic terms.

Book Sir Thomas Elyot as Lexicographer

Download or read book Sir Thomas Elyot as Lexicographer written by Gabriele Stein and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Thomas Elyot's Latin-English dictionary, published in 1538, became the leading work of its kind in England. Gabriele Stein describes this pioneering work, exploring its inner structure and workings, its impact on contemporary scholarship, and its later influence. The author opens with an account of Elyots life and publications. Sir Thomas Elyot (c. 1490-1546) was a humanist scholar and intellectual friend of Sir Thomas More. He was employed by Thomas Cromwell in diplomatic and official capacities that did more to impoverish than enrich him, and he sought to increase his income with writing. His treatise on moral philosophy, The Boke named the Governour, was published in 1531, and dedicated to Henry VIII. His popular treatise on medicine, The Castell of Helth, published some years later, went through seventeen editions. Professor Stein then considers how and why Elyot decided to compile a Latin-English dictionary. She looks at the guiding principles, the organization he devised, and the authors and texts he used as sources. She examines the books importance for the historical study of English, noting the lexical regionalisms and items of vulgar usage in the Promptuorum parvulorum and the dictionaries of Palsgrave and Elyot before discussing Elyots linking of lemma and gloss, and use of generic reference points. She explains how Elyot translated and defined the Latin headwords and compares his practice with his predecessors. The author ends with a detailed assessment of Elyots impact on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century dictionaries and his place in Renaissance lexicography. Her exploration of the work of an outstanding sixteenth-century scholar will interest historians of the English language, lexicography, and the intellectual climate of Tudor England.

Book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers

Download or read book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers written by Christine Franzen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-Saxon lexicography studies Latin texts and words. The earliest English lexicographers are largely unidentifiable students, teachers, scholars and missionaries. Materials brought from abroad by early teachers were augmented by their teachings and passed on by their students. Lexicographical material deriving from the early Canterbury school remains traceable in glossaries throughout this period, but new material was constantly added. Aldhelm and Ælfric Bata, among others, wrote popular, much studied hermeneutic texts using rare, exotic words, often derived from glossaries, which then contributed to other glossaries. Ælfric of Eynsham is a rare identifiable early English lexicographer, unusual in his lack of interest in hermeneutic vocabulary. The focus is largely on context and the process of creation and intended use of glosses and glossaries. Several articles examine intellectual centres where scholars and texts came together, for example, Theodore and Hadrian in Canterbury; Aldhelm in Malmesbury; Dunstan at Christ Church, Canterbury; Æthelwold in Winchester; King Æthelstan's court; Abingdon; Glastonbury; and Worcester.

Book Old Names New Growth

Download or read book Old Names New Growth written by Peter Bierbaumer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the 2nd ASPNS conference the emphasis regarding the topics of the talks was placed on lexicographic and linguistic matters. In this volume the contributors assess the various problems of working with plant names like foxes glofa and geormanleaf, pulege and psyllium, hlenortear or fornetes folm. A special study analyses the semantic aspects of Old English plant names. More generally plant related discussions deal with the mandrake legend in Anglo-Saxon England and continental Europe, the need for a new publication of the Old English Herbarium and of the Medicina de Quadrupedibus, or the tree names in Anglo-Saxon charters. The conference also served as a platform to introduce the Graz-Munich online project Dictionary of Old English Plant Names.

Book Types of Variation

Download or read book Types of Variation written by Terttu Nevalainen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume interfaces three fields of linguistics rarely discussed in the same context. Its underlying theme is linguistic variation, and the ways in which historical linguists and dialectologists may learn from insights offered by typology, and vice versa. The aim of the contributions is to raise the awareness of these linguistic subdisciplines of each other and to encourage their cross-fertilization to their mutual benefit. If linguistic typology is to unify the study of all types of linguistic variation, this variation, both diatopic and diachronic, will enrich typological research itself. With the aim of capturing the relevant dimensions of variation, the studies in this volume make use of new methodologies, including electronic corpora and databases, which enable cross- and intralinguistic comparisons dialectally and across time. Based on original research and unified by an innovative theme, the volume will be of interest to both students and teachers of linguistics and Germanic languages.

Book The Lexical Typology of Semantic Shifts

Download or read book The Lexical Typology of Semantic Shifts written by Päivi Juvonen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume focuses on semantic shifts and motivation patterns in the lexicon. Its key feature is its lexico-typological orientation, i.e. a heavy emphasis on systematic cross-linguistic comparison. The book presents current theoretical and methodological trends in the study of semantic shifts and motivational patters based on an abundance of empirical findings across genetically, areally and typologically diverse languages.
