Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kindle Publishing with Professional Results! Publishing books in Kindle format has never been a better option for authors who want to reach their market and audience as directly as possible. But the hurdle most author/publishers find the most difficult is actually producing a clean, attractive, well-formatted Kindle e-book. The web is saturated with resources and communities supporting this endeavor, but accurate, up-to-date and truly useful information remains maddeningly hard to find. It's even harder for authors and publishers who want to go beyond the basics and create something better than what novice tools or a simple conversion from Word can produce. A Step-by-Step Guide to Expert Publication This new book is what you need to clear that hurdle: a comprehensive guide to getting from Word or InDesign to a thoroughly professional, craft-published result - even with complex material! Far beyond the basics of formatting text in chapters, this guide covers the details of illustrations, tables, lists, footnotes and more... all with the aim of a maximum-quality result. Pro Techniques for Those Who Aim Higher This is not yet another "easy ways to do it" quick-reference for authors, and it's not another "all in one" guide to self-publishing. It's a complete and focused guide to the most difficult, misunderstood step: the process and techniques that turn a live book file into a polished Kindle publication! And it's completely up to date, freshly written by an experienced publication designer, veteran publisher and award-nominated writer. Technical Background Required: While this guide is aimed at all serious Kindle publishers, some basic knowledge will help readers get the most from it: Using MS Word at a professional level (including styles) -or- Using Adobe InDesign as a publication development tool; A working knowledge of HTML and CSS document structure; And a drive to publish Kindle works with the goal of quality, not expedience! Readers with less starting knowledge will find useful information as well, along with guides to acquiring those supporting skills needed to make the most of this valuable reference. Veteran Kindle publishers will find new insights and methods as well. No matter what your level of expertise, this is the guide every serious Kindle publisher needs! Ready to go pro with Kindle publishing? Here's your chance!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can publish directly from your writing!Print, PDF, ePUB, & Kindle InDesign is the best tool available for authors desiring to control the look and function of their book as you write: print or ebook. There is no better way to help the reader understand what you have to share. From your basic InDesign document(s) you can easily export the best PDFs for print, colored PDFs for reading online or on your iPad, ePUBs for iBooks, Kobo, and Nook, and a Kindle version for Fire and the older versions. No other application has nearly the control over typography. This book gives you a solid background in typography, page layout, and book design while providing you with the latest instruction on the creation of on-demand books for the best providers (print, ePUB, and Kindle) used by the new generation of self-publishers in the 21st century.Experience the joy and satisfaction of controlling the look and presentation as you create your world in words. Your book becomes a much more meaningful creative experience. Your readers receive the love and care you send their way. It's a wonderful way to write! Experience the joy of creation! Here's some brief words as you start though this second edition of Writing in InDesign. You will discover that what I am doing is working creatively within InDesign to produce completed books almost as a fine art exercise while maintaining excellence and production needs. What I want to share with you is a method, an attitude, a ministry of service to the reader which is enabled by the typographic power of InDesign. I am discussing one-person self-publishing, direct communication from author to reader. One of the wonderful things about the new publishing paradigm is the control we get as artists, authors, and designers over the entire package. A modern book is released in multiple sizes, versions, and formats. The content and design remain fluid as we shape the book while we learn and grow. After they are released, we can easily adjust content, layout, and presentation of our books in response to emails, FaceBook, Twitter, and the whole host of contemporary social networking online. This book contains an extravagant amount of additional training in the appendixes. A: Basic Typography Part OneHere you get the information you need to use fonts professionally. This covers why and how typesetting (what we do in InDesign) differs from typewriting (what you might do in Word and Office). B: Setting up styles: Typography Part TwoHere is the conceptual knowledge on how to set up a functional default set of paragraph and character styles, plus an intro to object styles. You'll modify these for your use. B2: A set of default stylesHere are step by step instructions for setting up a set of defaults which will get you started. You will modify these many times as you proceed in your book design journey. But, you must start somewhere. C: Image production & formatsThe difference between vector and bitmap. How to make a graphic in InDesign. How to convert them in Photoshop for use in ebooks. What formats should used and why. C2: Cover designYou increasingly need to be concerned about how readable your cover is when reduced to thumbnail size on a Website. This is true of your print covers as well as your ebook covers. D: Uploading your finished bookThis covers step by step procedures at Lulu and Createspace for print books and for downloadable PDFs at Lulu and Scribd. E: Designing your ePUB & KindleHere are design tips & techniques for converting your printed book to an ePUB. Included is a simple conversion process for your Kindle version. F: Repairing the XHTML and CSSFor those of you still using CS5.5 or earlier. For those of you comfortable in these two coding languages, here are instructions on how to crack open your ePUB and make it fancy.

Book Writing In InDesign CC 2014 Producing Books

Download or read book Writing In InDesign CC 2014 Producing Books written by David Bergsland and published by David Bergsland. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major update for me. The ePUB production techniques have changed quite a bit: both for fixed layout and for reflowable ePUBs. Many of the changes I've been waiting for with ePUB production have been implemented. InDesign now stands at the top of the heap for book production in general and ePUB production in particular. You do not need to know code, though understanding how HTML and CSS works will aid your conceptual understanding. I was lukewarm about FXL until I realized that the new fixed layout ePUBs would show gradient paragraph rules, gradient strokes and fills in tables, and much more. The only major things we're missing are justification and hyperlinked test does not work in FXL. The exported ePUBs upload flawlessly to the iBooks Store and Kobo Writing Life. Finally, the 21st century book publishing software we need is within our grasp. There's still more to come, but this version is very good.

Book Converting Your Books to Ebooks With Indesign Cc

Download or read book Converting Your Books to Ebooks With Indesign Cc written by David Bergsland and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a design book, not a set of software tutorials. It is assumed you know how to use InDesign CC. Graphic designers are often appalled by what they see in ebooks. PDFs are no real problem, as they work with them all the time. But ePUBs and MOBI versions seem like a weird type of book with the limits of Web design, plus no real possibility of typographic control. It is true that ebooks have been a mess until the past couple of years. In some ways, they still are. However, InDesign CC has truly solved most of the problems. It always did export the best PDFs. Now it exports very good ePUB FXLs (fixed layout), reflowable ePUBs, and Kindle books (though it still takes a bit of work to fit Amazon's requirements). Wonderful that all our problems are solved, right? Well, you know better than that. Each format requires a redesign to make it work well. But that is never going to change. This book shows you how to make the redesigns efficiently. You never will be able to automatically repurpose a document for print, PDF, ePUB FXL, ePUB Reflowable, and Kindle book with excellence. Automation can only produce average quality. But you can quickly redesign your styles. This book will show you how these books are put together. It will explain the format limitations. Then it will talk about what is possible and give you the freedom to add excellent typography within those parameters. The book covers the creation of: Downloadable PDFs: These are also the basis of Kindle's Textbook, or Print Replica, version Fixed layout ePUB FXLs: How they differ from PDFs, plus who accepts them & who does not Reflowable ePUBs: with embedded fonts or not, what does not work, and what you can do Kindle KF8: and Amazon's new KFX format with Enhanced Typography This book will tell you, who already know how to produce an excellent book design for print, how to convert that design to a downloadable color PDF, an ePUB FXL version, a reflowable version with embedded fonts, another without fonts, and a dumbed down Kindle version for those things Kindle can't handle yet. The design portion is up to you. This book is written to provide solutions to those irritating ebook production problems, so you can design more freely."

Book excerpt: Almost everything you've read about formatting pictures for Kindle is wrong. The advice offered by Kindle experts and even Amazon itself can give images that are tiny, blocky, noisy, or wildly inconsistent on different Kindles. Aaron Shepard, author of acclaimed books on Kindle and POD publishing, brings his years of experience in book design, webmastering, and photography to bear on a single question: How do you make pictures look great on the Kindle? He answers that question, while also providing beginners a basic course in picture editing. Along the way, he discusses how to keep Microsoft Word from sneakily degrading your pictures; how to adjust HTML code to show images at their best; how to make part of a picture transparent for Night and Sepia modes; how to boost the power of your cover image as a marketing tool; and how to create anything from children's books to photography books to poetry books within minutes with the Kindle Comic Creator. Best of all, you don't have to take his word for any of it. The proof is right in the book, with samples of many kinds of pictures you might use -- photos, paintings, drawings, diagrams, tables, screenshots, cover images, and more. Nowhere else will you find such in-depth info on working with Kindle graphics. Whatever you use to create Kindle books -- Word, InDesign, a dedicated ebook app, or straight HTML -- you'll find Pictures on Kindle a perfect companion to other formatting guides. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Aaron Shepard is a foremost proponent of the new business of profitable self publishing, which he has practiced and helped develop since 1998. He is the author of Aiming at Amazon, POD for Profit, Perfect Pages, and From Word to Kindle, Amazon's #1 bestselling paid book on Kindle formatting. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// REVIEWS Far and away the best resource I know for self publishers who plan to include photos or other graphics in their Kindle books.
