Book excerpt: Known as "the golden era," the period from 1880 to 1920 brought unbridled growth, prosperity, and national note to the second largest city in Massachusetts. Worcester's population increased by more than one hundred twenty thousand people in this forty-year period, and the city produced the greatest variety of manufactured goods in the country. Worcester: 1880-1920 captures the expansion of the city through the images that feature a variety of subjects, such as the erection of the three-decker buildings in the early working-class neighborhoods, the construction of the new Union Station, and the vitality of the downtown stores and marketplaces. These photographs, most of which have been taken from glass-plate negatives, chronicle the rapid growth of a diverse economy fueled by an expanding multiethnic community.

Book The Physical Geography of Worcester Massachusetts

Download or read book The Physical Geography of Worcester Massachusetts written by Joseph H. Perry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Geography of Worcester Massachusetts Standing at the summit of Vernon Street hill and looking westward and northwestward, we overlook the deep valley bordered on one side by Millbury Street and on the other by Southbridge Street, and see beyond the higher land, along the crest of which is Main Street from May Street to New Worcester hill; and, still more distant, rising from this, a rolling, billowy area looking as if the surface of the earth had been raised into great dome-like waves, and there transfixed; and finally we see, in the distant background, the highlands of Leicester and Paxton, along the summit of which we trace the horizon with its upward curve showing us the outline of Asnebumskit. Or, again, if we stand on an open spot on Belmont Street hill and look westward, we overlook the valley beneath followed by the Boston Maine and Fitchburg Railroads, and see beyond the same billowy landscape with the Paxton and Leicester highlands for their background. As we look at this beautiful and varied landscape, confusing though it may seem, we may justly ask what these highlands, these valleys, these domelike hills, these plains, these meadows, these streams, these ponds and lakes mean. What is the story they tell us? For in nature there is no chaos, everything has its meaning, if only we have eyes to see, and the perception to understand the revelation. In studying the physical geography of Worcester, let us begin near the northeast corner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: One of the Best Books of the Year: Parade, Glamour, Real Simple, Refinery29, Yahoo! Lifestyle. "A startlingly modern love story and a mesmerizing portrait of a woman's self-transformation from muse to artist." --Celeste Ng, author of Little Fires Everywhere "I'd rather take a photograph than be one," Lee Miller declares after she arrives in Paris in 1929, where she soon catches the eye of the famous Surrealist Man Ray. Though he wants to use her only as a model, Lee convinces him to take her on as his assistant and teach her everything he knows. As they work together in the darkroom, their personal and professional lives become intimately entwined, changing the course of Lee's life forever. Lee's journey of self-discovery takes took her from the cabarets of bohemian Paris to the battlefields of war-torn Europe during WWII, from inventing radical new photography techniques to documenting the liberation of the concentration camps as one of the first female war correspondents. Through it all, Lee must grapple with the question of whether it's possible to stay true to herself while also fulfilling her artistic ambition--and what she will have to sacrifice to do so.
