Book Wooster High School Class of 1965 50th Reunion

Download or read book Wooster High School Class of 1965 50th Reunion written by Patricia Melton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We came by car, by plane, by bicycle. Perhaps someone took a bus or a train. We gathered for two evenings at the Atlantis, which didn't exist when we were in school. Some of us visited Wooster and some of us had breakfast and lunches with old friends we hadn't seen in years. We are real estate agents and teachers, nurses and artists, ranchers, lawyers, chiropractors, golfers, computer analysts and programmers, engineers and bridge masters. We served in the military and as firefighters and police. One of us became mayor of Lovelock and one became chair of the Tribal Council for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. Others have worked in state, local and federal agencies. Some of us have come to every reunion; some have come to none, and for one of us, the fiftieth was the first time. Some of us left Reno as soon as we could; some of us have come back; some have lived in Nevada's mountains and valleys all our lives. All of us were members of the first class to go through all three years of high school at Wooster, graduating in 1965.

Book excerpt: Brandeis University is the United States' only Jewish-sponsored nonsectarian university, and while only being established after World War II, it has risen to become one of the most respected universities in the nation. The faculty and alumni of the university have made exceptional contributions to myriad disciplines, but they have played a surprising formidable role in American politics. Stephen J. Whitfield makes the case for the pertinence of Brandeis University in understanding the vicissitudes of American liberalism since the mid-twentieth century. Founded to serve as a refuge for qualified professors and students haunted by academic antisemitism, Brandeis University attracted those who generally envisioned the republic as worthy of betterment. Whether as liberals or as radicals, figures associated with the university typically adopted a critical stance toward American society and sometimes acted upon their reformist or militant beliefs. This volume is not an institutional history, but instead shows how one university, over the course of seven decades, employed and taught remarkable men and women who belong in our accounts of the evolution of American politics, especially on the left. In vivid prose, Whitfield invites readers to appreciate a singular case of the linkage of political influence with the fate of a particular university in modern America.

Book A Battle for the Soul of Islam

Download or read book A Battle for the Soul of Islam written by M. Zuhdi Jasser and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the unsettling social shifts in the wake of 9/11 was the global attention paid to Islam. Here in the United States, we became divided, often sadly along partisan lines, between those who believed every Muslim was a potential threat and those who believed no Muslim could do wrong. For conservative Wisconsin native and former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, these radical times meant facing a new reality as a devout Muslim and a patriot—a certain betrayal within his faith, and a need to answer a question that crossed the minds of even the most sensitive and politically correct: “Can a good Muslim be a good American as well?” Jasser founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) to instill in young American Muslims an appreciation for the distinctively positive impact that this nation’s ideals of liberty have had upon the world. As a nationally recognized expert on Muslim radicalization, he offers non-Muslims a definitive comprehension of the difference between Islam and the spiritual cancer known as Islamism, or political Islam, and how violence and extremism run counter to Islam’s true teachings. As he persuasively argues, until we acknowledge the threat of Islamism in all its forms, the majority of Americans will be gulled into recognizing only the most obvious: terrorism. In A Battle for the Soul of Islam, Jasser embraces both his faith and his country while asking hard questions: * Are American Muslim children learning entitlement as victims, or are they being taught individual responsibility and critical thinking? * Are poisonous conspiracy theories dividing their American identity, or are they gaining exposure to reason, nationalism, and patriotism? * Are Muslims publicly critical of the Islamist movements of the Middle East, or do they remain silent on aspects of religious doctrine that conflict with modernity and universal equality? * Is the American press downplaying the seditious threat of homegrown Islamist radicalism and the influence of Islamists’ propaganda arm on our governmental policies? * Is our culture of political correctness a major obstacle toward long-overdue Muslim reform against Islamism? All these years after 9/11, it’s time for us to understand the true threat of Islamism. It is a Muslim problem that needs a Muslim solution, and A Battle for the Soul of Islam builds a solid, balanced, and imperative must-read foundation for the fight.
