Book Landscape Ecology Function and Management

Download or read book Landscape Ecology Function and Management written by J Ludwig and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encapsulates the extensive knowledge developed by CSIRO's National Rangelands Program on how rangeland landscapes function and the implications for management. It looks at the ecology of rangeland landscape processes and deals with what happens when things go wrong, when a landscape loses its ability to efficiently capture and store water and nutrients - a state the authors call dysfunctional.Ways of managing rangelands in response to understanding landscape function are also considered. The concluding Section looks to the future providing some scenarios for the way rangeland landscapes may be used in 2020.

Book The Delicate and Noxious Scrub

Download or read book The Delicate and Noxious Scrub written by JC Noble and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-arid woodlands are an important part of the Australian landscape and they have been the focus for scientific research by CSIRO since the 1960s. This book reviews that research and sets it in a historical perspective. It examines the development of pastoral science, with particular reference to the farming frontier in western New South Wales, as well as research conducted by CSIRO over the past thirty years aimed at helping manage increasing shrub densities while improving productivity. The author discusses past, current and future research directions and looks at how management perceptions and approaches continue to change as understanding of ecological processes and new strategies evolve.

Book Rangeland Systems

Download or read book Rangeland Systems written by David D. Briske and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book provides an unprecedented synthesis of the current status of scientific and management knowledge regarding global rangelands and the major challenges that confront them. It has been organized around three major themes. The first summarizes the conceptual advances that have occurred in the rangeland profession. The second addresses the implications of these conceptual advances to management and policy. The third assesses several major challenges confronting global rangelands in the 21st century. This book will compliment applied range management textbooks by describing the conceptual foundation on which the rangeland profession is based. It has been written to be accessible to a broad audience, including ecosystem managers, educators, students and policy makers. The content is founded on the collective experience, knowledge and commitment of 80 authors who have worked in rangelands throughout the world. Their collective contributions indicate that a more comprehensive framework is necessary to address the complex challenges confronting global rangelands. Rangelands represent adaptive social-ecological systems, in which societal values, organizations and capacities are of equal importance to, and interact with, those of ecological processes. A more comprehensive framework for rangeland systems may enable management agencies, and educational, research and policy making organizations to more effectively assess complex problems and develop appropriate solutions.

Book Linkages in the Landscape

Download or read book Linkages in the Landscape written by Andrew F. Bennett and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2003 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss and fragmentation of natural habitats is one of the major issues in wildlife management and conservation. Habitat "corridors" are sometimes proposed as an important element within a conservation strategy. Examples are given of corridors both as pathways and as habitats in their own right. Includes detailed reviews of principles relevant to the design and management of corridors, their place in regional approaches to conservation planning, and recommendations for research and management.

Book Connectivity Conservation and the Great Eastern Ranges Corridor

Download or read book Connectivity Conservation and the Great Eastern Ranges Corridor written by Brendan Mackey and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There has been increasing interest over recent years in the concept of connectivity at a continental scale, particularly as a response to improving the resilience of our biodiversity and ecosystems to the anticipated impacts of climate change. In 2006, the Environment Heritage and Protection Council (EPHC) considered the issue of a possible continental-scale corridor extending along Australia's great eastern ranges from Victoria through NSW to Atherton in Queensland. The EPHC established an Interstate Agency Working Group (Alps to Atherton Connectivity Conservation Working Group) ... This report's main aim is to review the scientific basis for the connectivity conservation approach that underpins the proposal for Australia?s first continental-scale connectivity conservation corridor from the Australian Alps to the Atherton Tablelands and beyond"--Preface.

  • Author : George Patrick Malanson
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1993-05-27
  • ISBN : 0521384311
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Riparian Landscapes written by George Patrick Malanson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-05-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riparian Landscapes examines the ecological systems of streamside and floodplain areas from the perspective of landscape ecology. The specific spatial pattern of riparian vegetation is seen as a result of, and a control on, the ecological, geomorphological, and hydrological processes that operate along rivers. Riparian structures are controlled by the spatial dynamics of channels, flooding and soil moisture. These dynamics are part of integrated cascades of water, sediment, nutrients and carbon, to which animal and plant species respond in ways that illuminate community structure and competition. The role of the riparian zone in controlling species distribution and abundance is discussed. Intelligent management of these valuable ecological resources is highlighted. The potential for linking hydrological, geomorphological and ecological simulation models is also explored. This book will be of interest to graduate and professional research workers in environmental science, ecology and physical geography.
