Book excerpt: The Muskogees' Struggle for a New World 'In Sacred Revolt Joel Martin places the 1813-1814 revolt of the people who were called 'Creek Indians' in the context of world history while forsaking nothing of the texture of their own culture. With a deft use of multiple perspectives, he has rewritten a chapter in the history of the Old South. His book will do much to freshen stale ways of thinking about a valiant people.' -Charles Hudson, author of The Southeastern Indians

Download or read book The Newspaper Indian written by John M. Coward and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newspapers were a key source for popular opinion in the nineteenth century, and The Newspaper Indian is the first in-depth look at how newspapers and newsmaking practices shaped the representation of Native Americans, a contradictory representation that carries over into our own time. John M. Coward has examined seven decades of newspaper reporting, journalism that perpetuated the many stereotypes of the American Indian. Indians were not described on their own terms but by the norms of the white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant society that wrote and read about them. Beyond the examination of Native American representation (and, more often, misrepresentation) in the media, Coward shows how Americans turned native people into symbolic and ambiguous figures whose identities were used as a measure of American Progress. The Newspaper Indian is a fascinating look at a nation and the power of its press. It provides insight into how Native Americans have been woven with newsprint into the very fabric of American life.

Book Rivers of Sand

Download or read book Rivers of Sand written by Christopher D. Haveman and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its height the Creek Nation comprised a collection of multiethnic towns and villages with a domain stretching across large parts of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. By the 1830s, however, the Creeks had lost almost all this territory through treaties and by the unchecked intrusion of white settlers who illegally expropriated Native soil. With the Jackson administration unwilling to aid the Creeks, while at the same time demanding their emigration to Indian territory, the Creek people suffered from dispossession, starvation, and indebtedness. Between the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs and the arrival of detachment six in the West in late 1837, nearly twenty-three thousand Creek Indians were moved—voluntarily or involuntarily—to Indian territory. Rivers of Sand fills a substantial gap in scholarship by capturing the full breadth and depth of the Creeks’ collective tragedy during the marches westward, on the Creek home front, and during the first years of resettlement. Unlike the Cherokee Trail of Tears, which was conducted largely at the end of a bayonet, most Creeks were relocated through a combination of coercion and negotiation. Hopelessly outnumbered military personnel were forced to make concessions in order to gain the compliance of the headmen and their people. Christopher D. Haveman’s meticulous study uses previously unexamined documents to weave narratives of resistance and survival, making Rivers of Sand an essential addition to the ethnohistory of American Indian removal.

Book The Triumph of the Ecunnau Nuxulgee

Download or read book The Triumph of the Ecunnau Nuxulgee written by William W. Winn and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triumph of the Ecunnau-Nuxulgee is the first book to chronicle the tragic saga of Indian Removal with a specific focus on the Chattahoochee Valley of Georgia and Alabama. With candor and objectivity, William W. Winn chronicles the duplicity, political maneuvering, and military force through which the native Creeks ultimately lost their lands, illuminating latent issues of morality, sovereignty, cultural identity, and national destiny the affair brought to the surface. He introduces readers to the key players on both sides of one of our nation's most infamous dramas, which twice brought it to the brink of civil war, taking them into the resplendent halls of Congress, the smoke-filled backrooms of commercial establishments, and the earthy Native town squares where decisions were made that plotted the trajectory of both a region and a people. Along the way, Winn demonstrates the elusive but vital connection between the state rights philosophy-brought to its fullest expression by firebrand Georgia Governor George M. Troup-and the rise of the Old South and the coming of the Civil War. While it is perhaps too much to say that the doctrine originated in the Indian question. Triumph makes clear that it certainly matured as a result of that issue. In the end, this is the story of America's moral failure to live up to its most sacred promises and a foreshadowing of the terrible consequences of that act, the aftershocks of which are still being felt today.
