Book Packrat Middens

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julio L. Betancourt
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2021-11-16
  • ISBN : 0816547157
  • Pages : 478 pages

Download or read book Packrat Middens written by Julio L. Betancourt and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past thirty years, late Quaternary environments in the arid interior of western North America have been revealed by a unique source of fossils: well-preserved fragments of plants and animals accumulated locally by packrats and quite often encased, amberlike, in large masses of crystallized urine. These packrat middens are ubiquitous in caves and rock crevices throughout the arid West, where they can lie preserved for tens of thousands of years. More than a thousand of these deposits have been dated and analyzed, and middens have supplanted pollen records as a touchstone for studying vegetation dynamics and climatic change in radiocarbon time (the last 40,000 years). Now, similar deposits made by other mammals like hyraxes are being reported from other parts of the world. This book brings together the findings and views of many of the researchers investigating fossil middens in the United States, Mexico, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. The contributions serve to open a forum for methodological concerns, update the fossil record of various geographic regions, introduce new applications, and display the vast potential for fossil midden analysis in arid regions worldwide. The findings presented here will serve to foster regional research and to promote general studies devoted to global climate change. Included in the text are more than two hundred charts, photographs, and maps.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy of the Wood Rat: Comparative Anatomy of the Subgenera of the American Wood Rat (Genus Neotoma) It seems hardly necessary to call attention to the fact that this contribution can lay no claim to completeness. During its preparation many problems were encountered, each of which would well repay months Of investigation. But a definite program was laid out and followed, and the work is as comprehensive as was deemed necessary for the special purpose for which it was prepared. Book The Allegheny Woodrat

  • Author : John Peles
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 0387360514
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book The Allegheny Woodrat written by John Peles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decline in populations of Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister) was first noticed in the 1980s. Since that time, woodrats have become extirpated from at least two states and have declined dramatically in several others. Recent evidence suggests that the decline of this species may be proceeding further south to include states where woodrat populations were previously considered to be stable. The Allegheny Woodrat: Ecology, Conservation, and Management of a Declining Species provides a comprehensive summary of research conducted over the past twenty-five years. The book integrates the results of this research into a comprehensive picture of the ecological requirements, conservation principles, and management strategies for this declining species. In addition, general principles learned from the study of woodrats are applied to the conservation and management of other declining species, including other species of Neotoma. The editors and chapter authors are researchers from both academic settings and state management agencies, individuals who have contributed significantly to the study of Allegheny woodrats during the past two decades. The book will be of interest to ecologists, conservation biologists, wildlife professionals, and students.

Book Ecological Observations on the Woodrat Neotoma floridana

Download or read book Ecological Observations on the Woodrat Neotoma floridana written by Dennis G. Rainey and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides observations on woodrats. The eastern woodrat has a significant impact on its community members by eating plants, giving refuge in its stick house for many other tiny creatures, and supplying food for certain meat eaters. During the eight-year study of these rodents on the University of Kansas Natural History Reservation, from February 1948 to February 1956, this effect altered dramatically as wood rat populations shifted in density and area inhabited. This research examines the wood rat population on the Reservation, the changes that the species goes through, and the variables that influence them.
