It may seem very magical for a thing to appear quite dif ferent to two persons at the same time, and yet remain unchanged; but so it is. As a proof of this, the lady to whom I have taken the liberty' of dedicating my little book wrote to me some time ago I look forward with great interest to the publication of that charming book, which I shall enjoy quite as much as if I were one of your legitimate readers of eight years old, instead of fifty-eight next Tuesday: so you see that not only the school-boy but one whose genius has delighted thousands, can read them with enjoyment. However, I suppose this is because the good and the gentle-natured, be their age what it may, are all children in heart; taking delight in the same simple things, and moved like most of yourselves by the expression of natural feeling. Book excerpt: These Danish folk-tales were originally collected by Svendt Grundtvig, a Danish professor and philologist (1824-1883). He found that throughout all the country districts, men and women were telling stories and reciting ballads that they had learned from their grandmothers, who, in their turn, had heard them from crooners of old songs, and tellers of old tales. Professor Grundtvig realized that these echoes of an earlier time were precious; that, if they were not perpetuated in written form, they would be lost. It was a labor of love on his part to collect these tales; a labor that lasted over twenty years, and that enlisted the aid of many of his countrymen. Grundtvig says that he has kept the simplicity and artlessness of the oral tradition; and that, in the case of varying versions from different parts of the country, he has taken the purer and more complete form, but has always preserved the epic unity.The translator of these tales spent a part of his boyhood in Denmark, where his father was United States Minister. There he heard many of these stories, which were told him by a manservant who came from Jutland. Jensen had not read any of these tales; but they, with many others, were stored in his memory. He had always known them, he said.

Admired and adopted in Scandinavia and Germany, he became central to the rhetoric of national romanticism and to more belligerent assertions of nationalism. Resurrected in the latter part of the twentieth century in Marvel Magazine, Thor was further transformed into an articulation both of an anxious male sexuality and of a parallel nervousness regarding American foreign policy. Martin Arnold explores the extraordinary regard in which Thor has been held since medieval times and considers why and how his myth has been adopted, adapted and transformed.
