Book The Fabulous Baker Boys

Download or read book The Fabulous Baker Boys written by Tom Maxwell and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-10-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a total of more than 500 goals in careers that saw them turn out for the likes of Hibernian, St Mirren, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Torino, Joe and Gerry Baker are two of the greatest strikers Scotland never had. While Liverpool-born Hibs legend Joe became the first man to make his England debut having never played in the English league, his US-born brother Gerry, a hero of St Mirren's Scottish Cup-winning side of 1959, was the first top-flight European footballer to turn out for the USA. Even though he spoke with a broad Scottish accent, Joe was in Alf Ramsey's initial squad for the 1966 World Cup. With unprecedented access to the Baker family archives, including contributions from Gerry Baker and the late Joe's son Colin, The Fabulous Baker Boys is a unique tale of Scotland's most celebrated sporting siblings and contains exclusive interviews with the likes of Denis Law, Lawrie Reilly, John Robertson, Alex Young, Pat Stanton, Bob Wilson and George Eastham.

This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this book's core is a critical edition of letters exchanged over 50 years between Anglo-Irish composer Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994) and the Welsh composer Grace Williams (1906-1977). These two innovative and talented women are highly regarded for their music, their professional activities and their roles in British musical life. The edition comprises around 200 letters from 1927 to 1977, none of which have been published before, along with scholarly introductions and contextualizations. Interwoven commentaries, in tandem with carefully constructed appendices, frame the letter texts. Moreover, the commentaries and introductory essays highlight and track the development of important themes and issues that characterize the study of twentieth-century British music today. This edition presents a dialogue, through both sides of a unique correspondence, offering an alternative commentary on musical and cultural developments of this period.

Book Avant Garde in the Cornfields

Download or read book Avant Garde in the Cornfields written by Michelangelo Sabatino and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close examination of an iconic small town that gives boundless insights into architecture, landscape, preservation, and philanthropy Avant-Garde in the Cornfields is an in-depth study of New Harmony, Indiana, a unique town in the American Midwest renowned as the site of two successive Utopian settlements during the nineteenth century: the Harmonists and the Owenites. During the Cold War years of the twentieth century, New Harmony became a spiritual “living community” and attracted a wide variety of creative artists and architects who left behind landmarks that are now world famous. This engrossing and well-documented book explores the architecture, topography, and preservation of New Harmony during both periods and addresses troubling questions about the origin, production, and meaning of the town’s modern structures, landscapes, and gardens. It analyzes how these were preserved, recognizing the funding that has made New Harmony so vital, and details the elaborate ways in which the town remains an ongoing experiment in defining the role of patronage in historic preservation. An important reappraisal of postwar American architecture from a rural perspective, Avant-Garde in the Cornfields presents provocative ideas about how history is interpreted through design and historic preservation—and about how the extraordinary past and present of New Harmony continue to thrive today. Schuette Jr., Purdue U; Ralph Schwarz; Paul Tillich.

Book Currituck County

Download or read book Currituck County written by A. Burgess Jennings and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currituck County, established in 1668, is the oldest and most northeastern county in the state of North Carolina. It is thought that the name "Currituck" was derived from a Native American word for "wild goose." The county covers 273 square miles of long peninsula that runs north and south along the western shore of the Currituck Sound, which, until the early 1800s, was open to the transatlantic shipping trade. In Currituck County, photographs from the 1860s through the 1960s capture the county during the Civil War, Reconstruction, World Wars I and II, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and technological advances of the 1950s. With the opening of the new Wright Memorial Bridge, dedicated on November 5, 1966, an ever-increasing flood of vacationers traveled through Currituck County to the Outer Banks, and local businesses evolved to accommodate these thousands, and later, millions of visitors. The images seen here show a way of life in Currituck County before the development of tourism.

In chronicling a dramatic shift in patterns of courtship between the 1920s and the 1960s, Beth Bailey offers a provocative view of how we sought out mates-and of what accounted for our behavior. More than a quarter-century has passed since the dating system Bailey describes here lost its coherence and dominance. Yet the legacy of the system remains a strong part of our culture's attempt to define female and male roles alike.

Book They Made Us Happy

Download or read book They Made Us Happy written by Andy Propst and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Betty Comden and Adolph Green were the writers behind such classic stage musicals as On the Town, Wonderful Town, and Bells Are Ringing, and they provided lyrics for such standards as "New York, New York," "Just in Time," "The Party's Over," and "Make Someone Happy," to name just a few. This remarkable duo, the longest-running partnership in theatrical history, also penned the screenplays for such cinematic gems as Singin' in the Rain and The Band Wagon. In the process they worked with such artists as Leonard Bernstein, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Judy Holliday, and Jule Styne. They Made Us Happy is the first book to tell the full story of their careers, lives, and work, starting with their acclaimed appearances as part of the sketch troupe the Revuers and moving through their bi-coastal lives as a pair of Broadway's top writers and two of Hollywood's most valued scribes. The book takes readers on a trip through almost the entirety of the twentieth century, and along the way there are appearances by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Greta Garbo, and Charlie Chaplin. Author Andy Propst brings both their produced work to life as well as many of the projects that that never made it to the stage or the screen, including an aborted musical version of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth, a bio-pic about director-choreographer Busby Berkeley, and their version of the book for Cole Porter's musical Out of This World. Comden and Green's wit and deft satire inspired laughs during their lives, and their musicals and movies have endured, amusing generation after generation. It's work that will always be making audiences happy.

Book Overcoming George

Download or read book Overcoming George written by Karl Schulz and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in Southern California during the Depression within a dysfunctional family controlled by a domineering stepfather was difficult. Here are a few topics: 1. George often bragged: "I got my first piece of ass when I was ten." 2. Mom thought that it was good for me to see my dead friend lying in a casket. Wrong! 3. I would search the house for mom's bottles of wine. When I found one, I poured her precious fluid down the drain. 4. As Jennie drove the station wagon, George ran his right hand all the way up her dress. This was very humiliating to me. 5. Three of my childhood friends lost their lives. My dad and one uncle committed suicide. 6. George put the 1938 Oldsmobile in low gear and rammed the big, chrome plated bumper into the right side of the parked car to cave it in. 7. Mom said that she saw George having sex with one of the burros. 8. I just hoped that my arms held out so that I would not drop the whirling "buzz" saw and cause it to shatter. 9. When my car hit the moving train, I was ejected and as I rolled through the weeds I said to myself "you're dead, Buz." 10. I lined the wall of the thirty-two foot deep cesspool with loose bricks while never using any safety equipment. 11. As I turned the steering wheel of the Model A to the left, the car landed on its right side. One guy's head went partially through the cloth roof. 12. We were thirty miles away from the first hydrogen bomb blast. The heat and shock waves were intense. 13. George shot himself in the heart. No one attended his funeral. THERE IS MUCH MORE. Book Coming Back to a Theater Near You

Download or read book Coming Back to a Theater Near You written by Brian Hannan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Silent Era, film reissues were a battle between rival studios--every Mary Pickford new release in 1914 was met with a Pickford re-release. For 50 years after the Silent Era, reissues were a battle between the studios, who considered old movies "found money," and cinema owners, who often saw audiences reject former box office hits. In the mid-1960s, the return of The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)--the second biggest reissue of all time--altered industry perceptions, and James Bond double features pushed the revival market to new heights. In the digital age, reissues have continued to confound the critics. This is the untold hundred-year story of how old movies saved new Hollywood. Covering the booms and busts of a recycling business that became its own industry, the author describes how the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart and Alfred Hitchcock won over new generations of audiences, and explores the lasting appeal of films like Napoleon (1927), Gone with the Wind (1939), The Rocky Horror Show (1975) and Blade Runner (1982).

Download or read book Forbidden Memory written by Tsering Woeser and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Red Guards arrived in Tibet in 1966, intent on creating a classless society, they unleashed a decade of revolutionary violence, political rallies, and factional warfare marked by the ransacking of temples, the destruction of religious artifacts, the burning of books, and the public humiliation of Tibet’s remaining lamas and scholars. Within Tibet, discussion of those events has long been banned, and no visual records of this history were known to have survived. In Forbidden Memory the leading Tibetan writer Tsering Woeser presents three hundred previously unseen photographs taken by her father, then an officer in the People’s Liberation Army, that show for the first time the frenzy and violence of the Cultural Revolution in Tibet. Found only after his death, Woeser’s annotations and reflections on the photographs, edited and introduced by the Tibet historian Robert Barnett, are based on scores of interviews she conducted privately in Tibet with survivors. Her book explores the motives and thinking of those who participated in the extraordinary rituals of public degradation and destruction that took place, carried out by Tibetans as much as Chinese on the former leaders of their culture. Heartbreaking and revelatory, Forbidden Memory offers a personal, literary discussion of the nature of memory, violence, and responsibility, while giving insight into the condition of a people whose violently truncated history they are still unable to discuss today.
