Political empowerment includes representation, participation and taking part in decision making process within formal political structures. Local government institutions in Bangladesh have opened potential spaces for rural women in this regard. From 1997 onwards, thousands of women have left their household chores to be a part of the political system after introducing election system for women seats. Alongside the government many development partners, such as NGOs, Women's organizations and civil society, came forward to meet up the challenges faced by women as new members of the political realm. This has certainly opened the window of the Women's voice in the Decision Making Process from the grass root level of Bangladesh. This will surely be a big step of a Sustainable Development.

Book Women s Political Participation in Bangladesh

Download or read book Women s Political Participation in Bangladesh written by Pranab Kumar Panday and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an understanding of institutional reforms, gender-related policy dynamics, the role of different actors in the policy process, and the impact of a particular policy on the state of women’s political participation in Bangladesh. The discussion is set against the background of the Fourth World Conference on Women, 1995, in Beijing, in which a Platform for Action signed by heads of governments expressed their countries’ commitment to achieve ‘gender equality and empowerment of women’ through ensuring integration of the gender perspective at all levels. In Bangladesh, notable among the initiatives undertaken was the enactment of the Local Government (Union Parishads) (Second Amendment) of 1997, through which one-third of seats were reserved for women in the Union Parishad (UP) and the system of direct election was introduced to elect women members in reserved seats. The Act of 1997 is considered to be a milestone, since it has enhanced women’s participation in the local government politics significantly. Against this background, the specific research questions that have been addressed in this volume include: the necessity of reform for enhancing women’s participation in politics; the context against which the Government of Bangladesh enacted the Act and the reasons such an initiative was not taken earlier; the actors behind the reforms and their role in the reform process; and the impact of the reform on the state of women’s participation at the local level in Bangladesh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes perceptions of self, power, agency, and gender of Muslim women in a rural community of Bangladesh. Rural women’s limited power and agency has been subsumed within the male dominated Islamic discourses on gender. Sarwar Alam intertwines an exploration of these power dynamics with reading of the Qur’an and Hadith, and analyzes how Muslim women’s perception of power and gender are linked to their relationship with religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The government of Bangladesh has recently introduced the provision of universal adult franchise in the reserved seats for women in local government institutions of the country to integrate half of the population in the decision-making process. It is important in this context, the extent to which this system of women representation in local government body contributes to women's political participation and empowerment and also to what extent they are able to perform their due roles. The present study explores these issues based on field level data. The study finds that the provision of direct election in the quota seats contributes to develop significant enthusiasm among women to participate in politics. The study, however, finds that women face severe hurdles and resistance from their male counterparts performing their due roles. Furthermore, the women as first timer in the political arena experience difficulties in understanding and performing their roles and responsibilities. The study therefore recommends further legal safeguards, training and social awareness programmes for effective participation and empowerment of women in the local government system of the country.

Book Women s Empowerment in South Asia

Download or read book Women s Empowerment in South Asia written by Pranab Panday and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic development in the poorest countries often makes better progress when women become involved in, and take a lead in, development projects. Encouraging women’s involvement, however, is often a major difficulty in societies where traditionally women’s status has been inferior and where women are expected to be domestic and passive. This book, based on extensive original research, considers major projects undertaken by non-governmental organisations in Bangladesh to encourage women’s participation. The book identifies the factors which motivated women to be active, discusses how women achieved the level of capacity and knowledge to enable them to serve their communities appropriately, assesses the major difficulties and recommends how empowerment projects can be improved in future. The book concludes that established institutions and traditional customs are often the greatest barrier to women’s participation.

Book Bangladesh Gender Equality Diagnostic of Selected Sectors

Download or read book Bangladesh Gender Equality Diagnostic of Selected Sectors written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, Bangladesh has made progress in women's participation in the labor force, gender parity in primary education, and women's political representation. Areas of concern include the high prevalence of violence against women, obstacles to women's access to resources and assets, unequal terms of their labor engagement, and impact of their overwhelming responsibility for care work. The Government of Bangladesh has made policy commitments toward gender equality and established an institutional framework to fulfill these. This publication intends to support the government in its attempt to address persisting gender inequalities and gaps through a multisector approach across policies, programs, and projects. It provides insights into gender issues in urban; transport; energy; and skills, vocational, and tertiary education, and gives suggestions for strengthening gender mainstreaming in projects.

Book Women in Governing Institutions in South Asia

Download or read book Women in Governing Institutions in South Asia written by Nizam Ahmed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines policies aimed at increasing the representation of women in governing institutions in six South Asian countries. Divided into three parts, it addresses the implications of uniformity and diversity for the substantive representation of women in parliament, civil service and local government. The contributing authors explore the scope and limits of ‘positive discriminatory policies’ within distinct country contexts, and the implications of the lack of such policies in other countries. Their findings shed new light on the extent to which the higher presence of women in different governing institutions matters, particularly in respect of promoting women’s issues; and also on the way men and women in different governing institutions look upon each other’s roles and adopt strategies for mutual adjustment. This innovative collection will appeal to students and scholars of gender studies, public policy and administration, international relations, law and political science.

Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Book Spatial Justice Contested Governance and Livelihood Challenges in Bangladesh

This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the key livelihood and governance challenges that the urban poor experience while navigating public spaces in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Using data collected through extensive fieldwork in Bangladesh, the book contributes to the emerging scholarship of resilient cities, gendered space, spatial justice, and poverty in cities of the Global South. The book assesses the everyday politics of survival for the urban poor; how the poor negotiate different levels of formal and informal modes of power and governance; and the dynamics of gender. It explores how tenuous counter-spaces are created when these factors combine to provide a valuable framework for work in other urban contexts in the Global South beyond Bangladesh. Using cross-disciplinary perspectives, this book investigates the issues of human development, urban governance, urban planning and the gendered nature of urban space to outline how these issues enable or constrain poor people’s livelihood practices and their rights to be in the city. Exploring debates surrounding placemaking and inclusive cities and their connection to poor people’s livelihoods, this book will be of interest to scholars in the field of Sociology, Development Studies, Planning, Geography and Anthropology.
