It has been noted that in the last two years medical doctors, psychologists, and health workers have seen a huge impact of the pandemic experience on women and their families. Children and adolescents suffered from a strong reduction of social contacts, while families had often to resort to cramped living condition that put a strain on normal life activities, especially in underprivileged areas of society. Fear and uncertainty reigned. All these factors caused a wide range of psychosocial symptoms, from loneliness to domestic violence, depression, and psychosomatic reactions. As health professionals, women have been influenced by the pandemic experience as well. Hospital staff, who had to care for a huge number of seriously ill patients in a very short time, were confronted with considerable expectations, which often turned into hostility, especially in the period before vaccinations became available. Psychotherapists received increased requests for appointments and had to adjust to video consultation for those they were able to accommodate in their practice. Seeing the pandemic crisis as an opportunity to learn from mistakes, and lack of preparation, fostering a greater understanding of women’s health in general, and the unique experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, trauma, adolescence, body experience, and gender identity that affects their health. Book excerpt: The spring of 2020 marked a change in how almost everyone conducted their personal and professional lives, both within science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) and beyond. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global scientific conferences and individual laboratories and required people to find space in their homes from which to work. It blurred the boundaries between work and non-work, infusing ambiguity into everyday activities. While adaptations that allowed people to connect became more common, the evidence available at the end of 2020 suggests that the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic endangered the engagement, experience, and retention of women in academic STEMM, and may roll back some of the achievement gains made by women in the academy to date. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM identifies, names, and documents how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the careers of women in academic STEMM during the initial 9-month period since March 2020 and considers how these disruptions - both positive and negative - might shape future progress for women. This publication builds on the 2020 report Promising Practices for Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nuanced ways these disruptions have manifested. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM will inform the academic community as it emerges from the pandemic to mitigate any long-term negative consequences for the continued advancement of women in the academic STEMM workforce and build on the adaptations and opportunities that have emerged.

The economic consequences for society at large are potentially catastrophic. The health and social care sectors have reacted by providing emergency care on an unprecedented scale, while the scientific community has focused on developing new treatments and a vaccine to prevent future waves of the pandemic. Evidence is emerging to suggest that certain conditions, such as obesity and hypertension, predispose some individuals to a worse outcome if they become infected, and that women may be less likely to die from COVID-19 than men. It is also currently believed that pregnant women are at no greater risk than the general population. There is an urgent need to determine whether these early observations are correct. Furthermore, we need to be sure that pregnancy outcomes are not affected by COVID-19 and that SARS-CoV-2 is not transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy or labour, nor to the infant through breast milk. There are so many questions that need to be answered to optimise care, avoid harm, reduce anxiety amongst women and their families, and inform health professionals and policymakers. We also need to understand the unintended consequences of the global lockdown on women’s health in general. For example, have rates of domestic violence risen; to what extent has women’s mental health been affected and have women successfully adapted or devised new coping mechanisms; have women been denied access to gynaecological treatments during the lockdown, including safe abortion and, if so, with what impact on their health and wellbeing; has the female work-force suffered disproportionately in economic terms; have national and international recommendations and policies been sufficiently gender neutral; have breastfeeding rates been adversely affected; will COVID-19 make attainment of the UN SDGs more difficult, etc.? In keeping with the Scope & Mission of Frontiers in Global Women’s Health, this Research Topic aims to provide a multi-disciplinary platform to answer important COVID-19 related questions that specifically impact upon women’s health and wellbeing, particular in resource-poor settings. The Topic Editors welcome a broad range of contributions including Original Research, Reviews, Commentaries, Study Protocols and Systematic Reviews. For example, the policy response to the Zika outbreak centred on limiting the spread of the vector through civic participation and asking women to defer pregnancy. Both actions are inherently gendered and reveal a distinct lack of consideration of the everyday lives of women. These policies placed women in a position whereby were blamed if they had a child born with Congenital Zika Syndrome, and at the same time governments required women to undertake invisible labour for vector control. What does this tell us about the role of women in global health security? This feminist critique of the Zika outbreak, argues that global health security has thus far lacked a substantive feminist engagement, with the result that the very policies created to manage an outbreak of disease disproportionately fail to protect women. Women are both differentially infected and affected by epidemics. Yet, the dominant policy narrative of global health security has created pathways which focus on protecting the international spread of disease to state economies, rather than protecting those who are most at risk. As such, the state-based structure of global health security provides the fault-line for global health security and women. This book highlights the ways in which women are disadvantaged by global health security policy, through engagement with feminist security studies concepts of visibility; social and stratified reproduction; intersectionality; and structural violence. It argues that it was no coincidence that poor, black women living in low quality housing were the most affected by the Zika outbreak and will continue to be so, until global health security is gender mainstreamed. More broadly, I ask what would global health policy look like if it were to take gender seriously, and how would this impact global disease control sustainability?"--

Yet, there is little evidence on the impacts of these policies on women in lower-income countries, where there may be limited social safety nets to absorb these shocks. We conduct a large phone survey and leverage India's geographically varied containment policies to estimate the association between the pandemic and containment policies and measures of women's well-being, including mental health and food security. On aggregate, the pandemic resulted in dramatic income losses, increases in food insecurity, and declines in female mental health. While potentially crucial to stem the spread of COVID-19, the greater prevalence of containment policies is associated with increased food insecurity, particularly for women, and reduced female mental health. For surveyed women, moving from zero to average containment levels is associated with a 38% increase in the likelihood of reporting more depression, a 73% increase in reporting more exhaustion, and a 44% increase in reporting more anxiety. Women whose social position may make them more vulnerable--those with daughters and those living in female-headed households--experience even larger declines in mental health.

The study assesses women's lived experiences in Nigeria during the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak and the imposition of lockdown. In times of crisis, whether political, religious, or health-related, Nigerian women, like other African women, are invariably depicted as victims. The current study describes suffrage ideology and the difficulties that Nigerian women face because of patriarchy and marginalization. The study explored complicated identities to critically appraise women in Nigeria based on their lived experiences. This study demonstrates how recognizing oppressive policies during the lockdown assisted women in developing coping skills and navigating a crisis. During the lockdown, when movement was severely restricted, the government failed to address women's health concerns, gender-based violence, and economic growth. Even though the interviews were centered on African feminism and intersectionality, the data collected and evaluated provided little support for these two theories. The study conducted interviews and examined social media postings and comments using Grounded Theory, Thematic Analysis, and Social Media Analysis as methods. Inductive interviews were done, and emergent themes were found. The inductive in-depth interviews were conducted with a variety of women who lived in Nigeria during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (late 2019 to mid-2020) and the implementation of the lockdown to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. ATLAS.TI, a qualitative computational analysis tool, was used to code and arrange the data from the interviews into themes. The second batch of data was gathered using keywords influenced by the previous set of data analysis's emergent topics. The data were structured to include female social media postings and comments on YouTube and Twitter. The study discovered that two underlying principles impact the behavior, attitude, expectation, and responsibility demonstrated by the women questioned and the remarks examined to successfully cope with the risks of the COVID-19 epidemic. Resilience and adaptation are two of these notions. The data suggest that Nigerian women negotiate crises by leveraging support for other women, obtaining knowledge for self-orientation, successfully controlling their emotions, and exploring methods to lessen tension while they traverse repressive governmental policies and systems.
