Book Communities of Women in Assam

Download or read book Communities of Women in Assam written by Nandana Dutta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses communities of women as a framework for reading women’s experience, rights and aspirations in Assam and Northeast India. It explores the varying roles played by such communities in the formation of society, the emergence of a women’s public sphere and the representation of these communities in culture. The essays in the volume study a host of women’s communities including the Mahila Samiti, Jain women’s organisations, Lekhika Sanstha, lesbian communities, religious gatherings, scientific and environmental groups, women’s collaborations through cookbooks, as well as nebulous communities of victims of persecution. They examine how women’s communities are both empowering and transformational but may paradoxically also be regressive and static. Lucid, analytical, and rich with case studies, this volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of gender studies, sociology, political science, history and cultural studies, particularly those interested in Northeast India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive appraisal of the relatively unexplored but highly impactful women’s association, the Assam Mahila Samiti which led one of the most remarkable women’s movements in colonial India. Central to the Assam Mahila Samiti story is its founding Secretary, the firebrand feminist Chandraprava Saikiani (1901-72) who, despite being an unwed mother and belonging to a lower caste, was a celebrated writer, a polemical columnist, and a successful publicist of two vernacular magazines in the 1940s. The book traverses these individual and collective journeys from the 1920s to the 1950s, exploring their negotiations with the complex terrain of the multi-ethnic Brahmaputra valley during the highly politicised period of the anti-colonial movement. It argues that theoretical understanding of the term public sphere may be enriched through an engagement with rare archival materials of these middle class women’s associations’ hand written minutes of meetings in a local language in early twentieth-century colonial India and posits that gender may not function merely as constitutive of the public, but how women’s collectives may shape, transform and orchestrate a veritable gendered public, resistant to both native patriarchy and sometimes to colonial authority.

Discriminated on the name of equality in the precedence of this dominated laddish quality. Even today in jobs she is being paid less Domestic violence and incessant suppression Has made her life a mess. Exploited in the name of ostensible laws She is a woman after all, full of flaws! But before you come forth, just remember one thing She is a woman sir, She's born with wings. Gone are the days When man was considered to be a defender of women. "She needs to be protected, she's frail, "in futility they chanted, Her virtue of forgiveness was always taken for granted. Past has taught her the resilience, And now she is fierce. Blood, hardships and toil, she now even appraises her tears. Till the time woman needs to be empowered, True empowerment won't come, As yet you keep her rights and interests immured inside a slum! The day when we don't need such words as women empowerment Congrats my dear! That day our girls will be really empowered!!

Book History and Myth Postcolonial Dimensions

Download or read book History and Myth Postcolonial Dimensions written by Arti Nirmal and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology, 'History and Myth: Postcolonial Dimensions', seeks to interrogate and dismantle the colonially structured symmetrical interpretations of the histories and mythological narratives of the former European colonies through depolarization, pluriversality, and border thinking. Here, the concepts of history and myth have been addressed from different perspectives and spatiotemporal zones by scholars from different parts of the world, which add to the global value of the book. It has been argued in this volume that the understanding of postcolonial histories and myths in the contemporary era is highly influenced by the colonially fashioned binaries: valid/ invalid, civilized/barbaric, inclusive/exclusive, relevant/irrelevant, good/bad, etc., which continue to preserve the epistemic citadels of coloniality and selectively promote such historical and mythological narratives that celebrate the superiority of the Global North and the inferiority of the Global South. This book will be of particular interest to scholars, researchers, teachers, and those interested in understanding history, postcolonial studies, decolonial studies, cultural studies, literature, and sociology.
