Download or read book Women Feminism and Social Change in Argentina Chile and Uruguay 1890 1940 written by Asuncion Lavrin and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminists in the Southern Cone countries?Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay?between 1910 and 1930 obliged political leaders to consider gender in labor regulation, civil codes, public health programs, and politics. Feminism thus became a factor in the modernization of theseøgeographically linked but diverse societies in Latin America. Although feminists did not present a unified front in the discussion of divorce, reproductive rights, and public-health schemes to regulate sex and marriage, this work identifies feminism as a trigger for such discussion, which generated public and political debate on gender roles and social change. Asunci¢n Lavrin recounts changes inøgender relations and the role of women in each of the three countries, thereby contributing an enormous amount of new information and incisive analysis to the histories of Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.

Book Trade Openness and Gender in Uruguay

Download or read book Trade Openness and Gender in Uruguay written by Maria Inés Terra and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey results from Uruguay show that there is gender discrimination in the private labor market, and that women spend more time than men doing domestic work and less time in the labor market. We take these and other features of the survey into account to build a gender aware CGE model with endogenous labor supply and a home production function. This kind of model is a useful tool to evaluate the impact of different policies, in particular those relating to gender. In this paper, we analyze the gender-differentiated impacts of trade openness in Uruguay on employment, wages and time allocation. We simulated different scenarios of tariff changes. Greater trade openness improved the situation of women in terms of employment and wages, but the impact on gender gaps depends on how trade openness affect trade flows. If net exports to Argentina increases, demand for female labor increases and the gender gap goes down. However, if net exports to Brazil and the rest of the world increase, unskilled male demand expands. When considering time distribution, the impact also depends on the elasticity of labor supply, which differs by skill.

Book South American Childhoods

Download or read book South American Childhoods written by Ana Vergara del Solar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume concerns childhood throughout South America after the 1990s, a period and territory of special complexity marked by the beginning—or intensification of—political neoliberalisation throughout the region. The decade also saw the ratification of the International Convention on Rights of the Child and post-dictatorial processes of political and social democratisation. The editors of this book explore the tension this juxtaposition has generated between logics and processes of dissimilar orientations. Within this framework, chapters investigate the neoliberalisation and institutionalisation of children’s rights and consider similarities and differences with respect to other regions. They also explore changes in schools and educational systems, as well as the phenomenon of the internal and external child and family migration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice From acclaimed Argentine author Pedro Mairal and Man Booker International-winning translator Jennifer Croft, the unforgettable story of two would-be lovers over the course of a single day. Lucas Pereyra, an unemployed writer in his forties, embarks on a day trip from Buenos Aires to Montevideo to pick up fifteen thousand dollars in cash. An advance due to him on his upcoming novel, the small fortune might mean the solution to his problems, most importantly the tension he has with his wife. While she spends her days at work and her nights out on the town-with a lover, perhaps, he doesn't know for sure-Lucas is stuck at home all day staring at the blank page, caring for his son Maiko and fantasizing about the one thing that keeps him going: the woman from Uruguay whom he met at a conference and has been longing to see ever since. But that woman, Magalí Guerra Zabala, is a free spirit with her own relationship troubles, and the day they spend together in this beautiful city on the beach winds up being nothing like Lucas predicted. The constantly surprising, moving story of this dramatically transformative day in their lives, The Woman from Uruguay is both a gripping narrative and a tender, thought-provoking exploration of the nature of relationships. An international bestseller published in fourteen countries, it is the masterpiece of one of the most original voices in Latin American literature today.
