It has been adopted as the official study program of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, with the approval of the president, Mrs. Clarence Johnson, and of Mrs. Hugh Murrill, the chairman of the Department of Literature. The purpose of the outline is to provide a systematic program for the study of the Great War from an historical and literary point of view. The outline is arranged for sixteen meetings in order to conform to the calendar of the majority of the clubs which meet fortnightly during the eight winter months. If extra meetings for business or sociability are desired, they may be inserted at convenient times. If more programs are needed, the important subjects may be treated more intensively, and some special topics taken up in greater detail. Contemporary France or Russia, for instance, might well be made the subject of three or more meetings. In fact the difficulty of dealing with such a general subject has been to condense it into the required limits, and to make selection from the vast amount of literary material now available. If the manner of treatment seems somewhat sketchy and incomplete it is because many of the clubs have previously made a detailed study of several of the European countries, and because we think something may now be gained by a bird's eye look at these great nations in relation to the present crisis in the history of the world. The program for each meeting is arranged under three headings which are intended to be used as the topics for papers or essays, or for talks or informal discussions. The men were eager and willing to respond to Old Glory's call to arms and the women at home lost no time in busying themselves in things intended to lessen the suffering of those over-seas. The splen did manhood of the Old North State manifested itself time and again on the field of battle and on the high seas: How many times a North Carolinian's name went down into imper ishable fame for deeds of valor and self sacrifice in behalf of the greatest cause of all time. The women at home, God bless them, spurred them on to high purpose, fired their souls with memories of their illustrious ancestors in the days of '64 and afforded them that warmth of love and trust and faith that kept them from doing not less than the best that was in them. Many of our women went overseas as nurses, and canteen workers, and one is sure that their very presence was a blessing to our men. At home in the great drives for humane institutions they surpassed themselves in the good they accomplished. Within the covers of this book are presented symposiums of many who gave of themselves and of their substance that the world might be made safe to live in and that the despots of Europe might be erased from the maps of the future generations. When one views the war in retrospection it is then that these sketches gain the significance that give them the place in every North Carolina home that they deserve. There is doubtless in this book mention of some loved one, set forth in all truthfulness, that gives. Him or her a little firmer hold on our heart. The publishers have spent considerable time, money and effort in bringing out this book, but the compensation that is theirs in feeling that they have produced a work worth while is worth more than the material gain to be derived from their labors. As it goes to press the writer is looking over several of the proof sheets. He sees many of his dearest friends in the eulogies and one in particular who has died since the book was planned. He was a veteran of the overseas army and contracted trouble of the stomach from which he never fully recovered and which finally resulted in his death. He was a modest fel low, the best friend that one could desire, and when I wrote up a brief review of his service I did so with due modesty, for I knew well how strongly he would object to anything flowery. He just simply wanted the plain facts, without frills. And that is the way he lived and of such men North Carolina is justly proud. For he is typical of the fineness of the manhood of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses at the Unveiling of the Memorial to the North Carolina Women of the Confederacy: Presented to the State by the Late Ashley Horne From time to time since the erection of the monument to the North Carolina soldiers of the Confederacy, in 1895, various plans have been suggested looking to the erection of a similar memorial to the North Carolina Women of the Confederacy. In 1911 Gen. Julian S. Carr, a representative from Durham County, introduced in the House of Representatives a bill providing for the appropriation of a sum sufficient for the erection of such a memorial. The bill, however, failed to be enacted into law. The fate of this bill was a keen disappointment to the thousands of Confederate soldiers of North Carolina who, better than any others, appreciated the services, the sacrifices, and the heroism of the women of the Confederacy. To none was the disappointment keener than to the late Ashley Home, then a representative in the General Assembly from Johnston County. Ashley Home was one of six sons whom his mother gave to the Confederacy, three of whom did not return. He himself was a mere boy of twenty when he volunteered in 1861. He saw four years of arduous service in Eastern North Carolina and under Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia. He was first assigned to Company C, 50th North Carolina Regiment, but was afterwards transferred to the Fifty-third Regiment, of which his older brother, Sam, was lieutenant, in the Daniel-Grimes Brigade, Rode's Division. After Appomattox, as orderly sergeant, he was sent to bear to General Johnston at Greensboro and General Sherman, near Durham's Station, the official news of Lee's surrender. At the close of his four years of service he returned to his home in Johnston County, where, by hard labor, self sacrifices, and sterling integrity, he accumulated a handsome fortune. His own mother was a typical "North Carolina woman of the Confederacy," and it was through her that he learned to appreciate the heroic qualities of those whom he called "our greatest soldiers from '61 to '65." Bitterly disappointed at the refusal of the General Assembly to erect a suitable memorial to the Women of the Confederacy, he determined to do so himself. Of course I thought instantly of University of North Carolina and felt that I wasn't so far from home after all, but I was told that it stood for United National Combat tants, the strongest of the French veterans organizations, and that I had been honored in receiving it. I did appreciate it and am very proud of it now, knowing that this man wished to show in this way his respect and admiration for American women. I Wish I could say he was romantically good looking, but none of the French men that I saw were. There were so few young men, and most of them had lost an eye or leg or arm, or looked as if they had been gassed or shell shocked. We have no conception of what a terrible reality the war was to those people; to them it was no gay adventure.
