Book Unpacking Policy

Download or read book Unpacking Policy written by Karen Brock and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book published for the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex presents the findings of a team of researchers based in the UK, Uganda and Nigeria. It sets out to examine the processes by which policies for poverty reduction are made and implemented, and assesses to what extent policies provide for positive change in the lives of poor people. The project advocates a policy process that is radically different from the traditional linear model; one that departs from structural adjustment exigencies of external conditionality to one in which actors, knowledge and policy spaces interact in policy making. Strategies are generated and owned locally and the poor are understood as active participants in their own development. The book argues that if political systems and the policy processes through which they are enacted are to be democratised, then so should the knowledge base that feeds those policy processes. This means working by a deliberative process not only to produce knowledge, but also to incorporate knowledge of different kinds; differentiating between respective roles and powers of discourse, and reconstituting the prevailing cultures of legitimacy and representation. Although based on evidence from Uganda and Nigeria, the book is conceived to have application to the struggle against poverty more widely.

Download or read book Smart Economics written by Oluyomi Ola-David and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom has been that rapid economic growth would lead to job creation. However, despite laudable growth rates in past years, Nigeria has experienced a worsening in human development indicators including poverty, inequality and unemployment. Literature shows that economic policies do have an impact on employment, but evidently Nigeria's employment policies have not lent to fill the ever-increasing employment gap. Why has this been the case? Furthermore, why have women tended to fare worse than men on most employment indicators? This paper gives an exposition on Nigeria's jobless growth situation by looking at some economic policy choices that have been embarked on since independence and how they impacted on poverty and employment. It portrays this sequence of events, in addition to drawing attention to various other institutional factors, in order to produce a rich narrative of the labour market scenery in which Nigerian women have to “act”. It applies the concept of smart economics that recognizes that gender equality contributes to greater efficiency, productivity and inclusive growth. Finally, in addition to recommending that labour market policies should continually be aware of the importance of and strengthen the productive capacities of small and medium enterprises, and the informal economy which tend to be drivers of job creation in the economy and for women in particular, it proposes integrating a decent work agenda that promotes full and productive employment, rights at work, social protection and the promotion of social dialogue into future employment policies.

Book Women s empowerment in agriculture and dietary quality across the life course Evidence from Bangladesh

Download or read book Women s empowerment in agriculture and dietary quality across the life course Evidence from Bangladesh written by Sraboni, Esha and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using nationally representative survey data from rural Bangladesh, this paper examines the relationship between women’s empowerment in agriculture and indicators of individual dietary quality. Our findings suggest that women’s empowerment is associated with better dietary quality for individuals within the household, with varying effects across the life course. Women’s empowerment is associated with more diverse diets for children younger than five years, but empowerment measures are not consistently associated with increases in nutrient intake for this age group. Women’s empowerment is positively and significantly associated with adult men’s and women’s dietary diversity and nutrient intakes. Different empowerment domains may have different impacts on nutrition, but other characteristics, such as maternal schooling and household socioeconomic status, may play a more important role for younger children. The importance of maternal education in the dietary quality of young children, and the relatively greater importance of women’s empowerment for older children and adults, imply that policies designed to empower women and improve nutritional status should be informed by knowledge of which specific domains of women’s empowerment matter for particular nutritional outcomes at specific stages of the life course.

Book New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa

Download or read book New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa written by Karl Wohlmuth and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume XIV analyses the New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa. Institutional issues and perspectives in designing new growth and poverty alleviation strategies are considered in various case studies (Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Botswana and Tanzania). Other studies deal with institutional problems of resource-rich countries after conflict (Sudan), and with the institutions to enhance environmental protection parallel with economic growth and poverty reduction (Niger). Further studies deal with institutions to bridge the gap between formal and informal entrepreneurial sectors in Kenya and Tanzania. Local issues and perspectives for designing new growth and poverty alleviation strategies are considered in case studies on rural-urban development gaps in Tanzania, and on microfinance as an instrument for new growth and poverty alleviation strategies (Tanzania and Eritrea). A study on small farmers in Ghana provides information on the role they can play in value chains. Two studies on Nigeria highlight the local and the sub-regional health and poverty alleviation programmes and the relation to growth. Book Reviews and Book Notes on the theme are part of the volume. This Volume builds the foundation for a comprehensive strategy of policy reforms in Africa so as to integrate new growth and poverty alleviation strategies. Complementary to Volume XIV is Volume XIII on New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa - International and Regional Perspectives. Both Volumes are of importance for all those who work in African countries as officials, executives, managers, researchers, and policy-makers, but also for all those who actively support Africa's development concerns at the international, regional, country, local and project levels. They will experience this Volume XIV and also the complementary Volume XIII as indispensable sources of insight, reference and inspiration.
