The Women's Land Army sent volunteers to farms, canneries, and dairies across the country, accounting for the majority of wartime agricultural labor. On the Farm Front tells for the first time the remarkable story of these women who worked to ensure both "Freedom from Want" at home and victory abroad. Formed in 1943 as part of the Emergency Farm Labor Program, the WLA placed its workers in areas where American farmers urgently needed assistance. Many farmers in even the most desperate areas, however, initially opposed women working their land. Rural administrators in the Midwest and the South yielded to necessity and employed several hundred thousand women as farm laborers by the end of the war, but those in the Great Plains and eastern Rocky Mountains remained hesitant, suffering serious agricultural and financial losses as a consequence. Lynne Carpenter reveals for the first time how the WLA revolutionized the national view of farming. By accepting all available women as agricultural workers, farmers abandoned traditional labor and stereotypical social practices. When the WLA officially disbanded in 1945, many of its women chose to remain in their agricultural jobs rather than return to a full-time home life or prewar employment. On the Farm Front illuminates the Women's Land Army's unique contribution to prosperity and victory, showing how this landmark organization changed the role of women in American society.

Book excerpt: By the end of the First World War, women's labor was viewed by contemporary observers as fundamental to the survival of family farms in Germany and consequently to the nation's economic and social stability. At the same time, however, the overburdening of farm women sparked increasingly acrimonious conflicts between young hired women, or Mägde, their employers, and state officials. The progressive feminization of agricultural work in Germany during the prewar decades and attempts after the war to prevent young women's flight from family farms is the focus of this new study. Concentrating principally on developments in the Kingdom, later the Freestate, of Saxony, the author highlights the ways that previously invisible historical actors -young rural women- actively shaped state policies: in disputes over work between Mägde and their employers before village magistrates; in the thorny debates over rural social welfare reform and the campaigns to professionalize farm wives and daughters; and in state officials' uneven enforcement of agricultural employment laws and their struggles to maintain the food supply during and after the First World War. The book furthermore challenges established narratives of German history that equate modernity with the industrial and the urban, instead suggesting that rural inhabitants participated actively in the broader debates and crises that defined modernity in the Imperial and Weimar eras, particularly concerning debates over individual rights versus collective national duties, the future health and prosperity of the Volk, and the meanings of Germanness.

Despite the growth of women's history and rural social history in the past thirty years, the work performed by women who lived in the nineteenth-century English countryside is still an under-researched issue. Verdon directly addresses this gap in the historiography, placing the rural female labourer centre stage for the first time. The involvement of women in the rural labour market as farm servants, as day labourers in agriculture, and as domestic workers, are all examined using a wide range of printed and unpublished sources from across England. The roles village women performed in the informal rural economy (household labour, gathering resources and exploiting systems of barterand exchange) are also assessed. Changes in women's economic opportunities are explored, alongside the implications of region, age, marital status, number of children in the family and local custom; women's economic contribution to the rural labouring household is established as a critical part of family subsistence, despite criticism of such work and the rise in male wages after 1850. Book excerpt: The paper highlights the role of rural women in agriculture in India: (1) their work participation rates in agriculture, and (2) the effects of the Green Revolution in terms of: (a) the rise in the number of female agricultural laborers and the type of work performed by them, (b) marginalization and poverty-prone existence of rural women, (c) technological impact and displacement, and (d) wage differentials. The study looks at rural women agricultural workers at a level where class and gender inequalities coincide. Women agricultural workers are occupying very low positions in the agrarian hierarchy. In terms of gender, rural women bear the burden of poverty and exploitation more heavily than men. The paper also discusses how rural women have been pushed into the category of "helpers." Women's participation in agricultural production is related to the decline in farm size and persistent poverty. The paper argues that women, and all "weaker" groups in general, are virtually inarticulate victims of the principle of equality in an unequal social context. And, so long as gender is an important indicator of economic social and political roles, there will be a need for special policies targeted to rural women for education and training, technology transfer, and credit.

Therefore it has become a family enterprise. The whole family of men, women and children work on it and earn their livelihood. Men's role in agriculture is widely known, but women's role is not that open, though they mostly work for more number of hours, with less privileges, tedious activities and with painful postures. It is only in the recent times that their role is being recognized, though there is a possibility that the women themselves are not aware of their contributions, hardships, and above all over burden of not only the household jobs but jobs related to agriculture and allied fields. The conditions is worse when they work on fields not of their own but on others. India is a vast country marked by different regions with diverse agro-climatic conditions. Hence the importance of conducting region-specific studies. The present study is conducted in Chittoor, one of the for districts of the drought-prone Rayalaseema region in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Of the total female work force in Chittoor District, 85.3 per cent are engaged in farm sector either as cultivators or as agricultural labourers. There is need for region-specific studies to gain clearer and deeper insights into the extent of women’s participation in agriculture and allied enterprises, problems confronted by them, and shifts in policy measures to be made to help them play a productive role and act as effective partners, along with men, in agricultural and rural development. The present humble attempt to make a micro level study.

In the series, this volume focusses on the issues of educational problems of the rural women in general and specialised training needs, facilities available and utilization of these in particular for providing them appropriate place in the prospective agriculture. Training needs of different groups in different agroclimatic and cultural contexts have been compiled at one place. Multiplicity of institutions has certainly benefited women fold but mushrooming of voluntary agencies is not desirable in spite of the best performance of voluntary agencies. What role different institutional structures have played in the education and training of women is discussed at length and future course of involvements is debated. Different agricultural development strategies adopted since independence have been critically examined for assessing the place of women in them and urgent action needed to meet the future challenges.
