Download or read book The Englishwoman s Review of Social and Industrial Questions written by Janet Horowitz Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Englishwoman’s Review, which published from 1866 to 1910, participated in and recorded a great change in the range of possibilities open to women. The ideal of the magazine was the idea of the emerging emancipated middle-class woman: economic independence from men, choice of occupation, participation in the male enterprises of commerce and government, access to higher education, admittance to the male professions, particularly medicine, and, of course, the power of suffrage equal to that of men. First published in 1985, this thirty-ninth volume contains issues from 1907 to 1908. With an informative introduction by Janet Horowitz Murray and Myra Stark, and an index compiled by Anna Clark, this set is an invaluable resource to those studying nineteenth and early twentieth-century feminism and the women’s movement in Britain.

Download or read book Protest Policy and the Problem of Violence against Women written by S. Laurel Weldon and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2013-12-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence against women is one of the most insidious social ills facing the world today. Yet governmental response is inconsistent, ranging from dismissal to aggressive implementation of policies and programs to combat the problem. In her comparative study of thirty-six democratic governments, Laurel Weldon examines the root causes and consequences of the differences in public policy from Northern Europe to Latin America. She reveals that factors that often influence the development of social policies do not determine policies on violence against women. Neither economic level, religion, region, nor the number of women in government determine governmental responsiveness to this problem. Weldon demonstrates, for example, that Nordic governments take no more action to combat violence against women than Latin American governments, even though the Swedish welfare state is often considered a leader in social policy, particularly with regard to women’s issues. Instead, the presence of independently organized, active women’s movements plays a greater role in placing violence against women on the public agenda. The breadth and scope of governmental response is greatly enhanced by the presence of an office dedicated to promoting women’s status. Weldon closes with practical lessons and insights to improve government action on violence against women and other important issues of social justice and democracy.
Download or read book Daily Life of Women 3 volumes written by Colleen Boyett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 1309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indispensable for the student or researcher studying women's history, this book draws upon a wide array of cultural settings and time periods in which women displayed agency by carrying out their daily economic, familial, artistic, and religious obligations. Since record keeping began, history has been written by a relatively few elite men. Insights into women's history are left to be gleaned by scholars who undertake careful readings of ancient literature, examine archaeological artifacts, and study popular culture, such as folktales, musical traditions, and art. For some historical periods and geographic regions, this is the only way to develop some sense of what daily life might have been like for women in a particular time and place. This reference explores the daily life of women across civilizations. The work is organized in sections on different civilizations from around the world, arranged chronologically. Within each society, the encyclopedia highlights the roles of women within five broad thematic categories: the arts, economics and work, family and community life, recreation and social customs, and religious life. Included are numerous sidebars containing additional information, document excerpts, images, and suggestions for further reading.

Download or read book Social Power And Influence Of Women written by Liesa Stamm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a variety of methodological and theoretical perspectives, the authors of this collection discuss women's power within the various sociocultural contexts in which women operate—such as the workplace, the family, and other interpersonal relationships—and the differential nature of women's power and influence over their life course. Personality characteristics associated with mastery and influence are examined, as are the limitations imposed by societal norms and expectations. Finally, the authors discuss the development of theories about women's power and suggest ways in which women's roles—and consequently, women's influence—are changing as new societal values evolve.
