Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woburn Records of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, From 1640 to 1873, Vol. 1: Births; Alphabetically and Chronologically Arranged The original records of births, deaths, and marriages in Woburn, prior to the year 1843, are contained in two volumes. The first volume embraces the period from 1641 to 17 68, and is, in fact, a copy of the original book of entry. According to the Rev. Samuel Sewall, the records of births, deaths. And marriages were first entered in an old blank volume, the leaves of which gradually became loose and badly worn. When Major James Converse was chosen town clerk, in 1688, he copied these records into a book of his own, and used it in place of the original volume The use of this latter book, however, was resumed by Mr. Samuel Carter, who suc ceeded Major Converse in the clerk's office in 1690. In December, 1691, Major Converse was again elected clerk, and held the office continuously until 1701. He transferred Mr. Carter's entries to his own book and again made use of it in place of the old volume, although the former book still remained his own private property. At a town meeting, held March 5, 1705, the fact that the town records proper were in a loose and perishable condition was brought to the atten tion of the citizens by James Fowle, town clerk, and the town thereupon offered to purchase Major Converse's transcript for twelve shillings. This offer was accepted, and his book was thereafter used as the clerk's reg ister; in it were recorded the births, deaths, and marriages down to and through a portion of the year 17 68. The second volume of births, deaths, and marriages extends from 1768 down to 1844, and is an original. When Mr. Nathan Wyman was chosen town clerk, in March, 1844, he procured separate record books for the births, deaths. And marriages, respectively, and began to keep a more systematic and detailed record than had been done previously. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woburn Records of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, Vol. 2: From 1640 to 1873 On petition received from the Rumford Historical Association, the City Council of Woburn, in May, 1890, passed the following vote: - "Ordered, That the Mayor be and hereby is authorized to have printed twenty-five hundred copies of his manuscript record of deaths, and that the expense therefor be paid out of the Miscellaneous Department." And it is further "Ordered, That the printed copies be deposited with the City Treasurer, who shall dispose of them to any and all persons for twenty-five cents a copy, and all sums received by him therefor shall be placed to the credit of the Miscellaneous Department." In pursuance of this vote the following pages are now presented to the public. In order to add to and perfect the record, I engaged Miss J. Gertrude Menard to assist me in comparing it with the data to be found on the gravestones in both the Salem Street and Calvary Cemeteries. Our comparison has resulted in the addition of over four hundred names to the recorded list, and in the discovery of a number of discrepancies between the clerk's records and those chiselled on the gravestones. These additions and corrections have been inserted in their proper chronological place, and for the purpose of distinguishing them from the town clerk's records, the word "Gravestone" has been added to each additional or corrected entry. In order still further to complete the Woburn record of deaths and to preserve for all time memorials which are slowly but surely passing out of existence, - memorials, too, the most sacred and valuable of all which have been left to us of the fathers, - I have added as an appendix to the record of deaths a transcript of the epitaphs to be found in the First and Second Burying-Grounds. For this transcript I am indebted to my friend, Mr. William R. Cutter, whose copy of the epitaphs in the First or Park Street Burying-Ground was made almost a quarter of a century ago. The changes and removals which have taken place in the Second or Montvale Avenue Burying-Ground since Mr. Cutter revised Mr. Nathan Wyman's manuscript list, in 1870, have somewhat disarranged the chronological order which was then prepared. As, however, the epitaphs of each yard are separately indexed, this slight disarrangement will not interfere with the value of the list for reference.
