Download or read book Ludwig Wittgenstein philosophie math matiques et jeu des checs written by Jacques Lemaire-Charpentier and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Wittgenstein s Lectures on the Foundations of Mathematics Cambridge 1939

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Lectures on the Foundations of Mathematics Cambridge 1939 written by Cora Diamond and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several terms at Cambridge in 1939, Ludwig Wittgenstein lectured on the philosophical foundations of mathematics. A lecture class taught by Wittgenstein, however, hardly resembled a lecture. He sat on a chair in the middle of the room, with some of the class sitting in chairs, some on the floor. He never used notes. He paused frequently, sometimes for several minutes, while he puzzled out a problem. He often asked his listeners questions and reacted to their replies. Many meetings were largely conversation. These lectures were attended by, among others, D. A. T. Gasking, J. N. Findlay, Stephen Toulmin, Alan Turing, G. H. von Wright, R. G. Bosanquet, Norman Malcolm, Rush Rhees, and Yorick Smythies. Notes taken by these last four are the basis for the thirty-one lectures in this book. The lectures covered such topics as the nature of mathematics, the distinctions between mathematical and everyday languages, the truth of mathematical propositions, consistency and contradiction in formal systems, the logicism of Frege and Russell, Platonism, identity, negation, and necessary truth. The mathematical examples used are nearly always elementary.

Book Wittgenstein s Philosophy of Mathematics

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Philosophy of Mathematics written by Pasquale Frascolla and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-12-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wittgenstein's role was vital in establishing mathematics as one of this century's principal areas of philosophic inquiry. In this book, the three phases of Wittgenstein's reflections on mathematics are viewed as a progressive whole, rather than as separate entities. Frascolla builds up a systematic construction of Wittgenstein's representation of the role of arithmetic in the theory of logical operations. He also presents a new interpretation of Wittgenstein's rule-following considerations - the `community view of internal relations'.

Book WITTGENSTEIN ET LA PHILOSOPHIE AUJOURD HUI

Download or read book WITTGENSTEIN ET LA PHILOSOPHIE AUJOURD HUI written by Antonia Soulez and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Tractatus Logico Philosophicus

Download or read book Tractatus Logico Philosophicus written by Ludwig Wittgenstein and published by Linkgua. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps this book will be understood only by someone who has himself already had the thoughts that are expressed in it—or at least similar thoughts.—So it is not a textbook.—Its purpose would be achieved if it gave pleasure to one person who read and understood it. The book deals with the problems of philosophy, and shows, I believe, that the reason why these problems are posed is that the logic of our language is mis- understood. The whole sense of the book might be summed up the following words: what can be said at all can be said clearly, and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence. Thus the aim of the book is to draw a limit to thought, or rather—not to thought, but to the expression of thoughts: for in order to be able to draw a limit to thought, we should have to find both sides of the limit thinkable (i.e. we should have to be able to think what cannot be thought). It will therefore only be in language that the limit can be drawn, and what lies on the other side of the limit will simply be nonsense. I do not wish to judge how far my efforts coincide with those of other philosophers. Indeed, what I have written here makes no claim to novelty in detail, and the reason why I give no sources is that it is a matter of indifference to me whether the thoughts that I have had have been anticipated by someone else. I will only mention that I am indebted to Frege's great works and to the writings of my friend Mr. Bertrand Russell for much of the stimulation of my thoughts. If this work has any value, it consists in two things: the first is that thoughts are expressed in it, and on this score the better the thoughts are expressed—the more the nail has been hit on the head—the greater will be its value.—Here I am conscious of having fallen a long way short of what is possible. Simply because my powers are too slight for the accomplishment of the task.—May others come and do it better. On the other hand the truth of the thoughts that are here communicated seems to me unassailable and definitive. I therefore believe myself to have found, on all essential points, the final solution of the problems. And if I am not mistaken in this belief, then the second thing in which the of this work consists is that it shows how little is achieved when these problems are solved. L.W. Vienna, 1918

This book was released on 2013-11-10 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is the only book-length philosophical work published by the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein in his lifetime. It was an ambitious project: to identify the relationship between language and reality and to define the limits of science. It is recognized as a significant philosophical work of the twentieth century. Wittgenstein wrote the notes for Tractatus while he was a soldier during World War I and completed it when a prisoner of war at Como and later Cassino in August 1918. It was first published in German in 1921 as Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung. Tractatus was influential chiefly amongst the logical positivists of the Vienna Circle, such as Rudolf Carnap and Friedrich Waismann.

Book Tractatus Logico Philosophicus Chiron Academic Press The Original Authoritative Edition

Download or read book Tractatus Logico Philosophicus Chiron Academic Press The Original Authoritative Edition written by Ludwig Wittgenstein and published by Wisehouse. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Ludwig Wittgenstein

Download or read book Ludwig Wittgenstein written by Mathieu Marion and published by Presses Universitaires de France - PUF. This book was released on 2004 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Wittgenstein Finitism and the Foundations of Mathematics

Download or read book Wittgenstein Finitism and the Foundations of Mathematics written by Mathieu Marion and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathieu Marion offers a careful, historically informed study of Wittgenstein's philosophy of mathematics. This area of his work has frequently been undervalued by Wittgenstein specialists and by philosophers of mathematics alike; but the surprising fact that he wrote more on this subject thanon any other indicates its centrality in his thought. Marion traces the development of Wittgenstein's thinking in the context of the mathematical and philosophical work of the times, to make coherent sense of ideas that have too often been misunderstood because they have been presented in adisjointed and incomplete way. In particular, he illuminates the work of the neglected 'transitional period' between the Tractatus and the Investigations. Marion shows that study of Wittgenstein's writings on mathematics is essential to a proper understanding of his philosophy; and he alsodemonstrates that it has much to contribute to current debates about the foundations of mathematics.
