Book Without Offending Humans

Download or read book Without Offending Humans written by Elisabeth de Fontenay and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central thinker on the question of the animal in continental thought, Élisabeth de Fontenay moves in this volume from Jacques Derrida's uneasily intimate writing on animals to a passionate frontal engagement with political and ethical theory as it has been applied to animals--along with a stinging critique of the work of Peter Singer and Paola Cavalieri as well as with other "utilitarian" philosophers of animal-human relations. Humans and animals are different from one another. To conflate them is to be intellectually sentimental. And yet, from our position of dominance, do we not owe them more than we often acknowledge? In the searching first chapter on Derrida, she sets out "three levels of deconstruction" that are "testimony to the radicalization and shift of that philosopher's argument: a strategy through the animal, exposition to an animal or to this animal, and compassion toward animals." For Fontenay, Derrida's writing is particularly far-reaching when it comes to thinking about animals, and she suggests many other possible philosophical resources including Adorno, Leibniz, and Merleau-Ponty. Fontenay is at her most compelling in describing philosophy's ongoing indifference to animal life--shading into savagery, underpinned by denial--and how attempts to exclude the animal from ethical systems have in fact demeaned humanity. But Fontenay's essays carry more than philosophical significance. Without Offending Humans reveals a careful and emotionally sensitive thinker who explores the unfolding of humans' assessments of their relationship to animals--and the consequences of these assessments for how we define ourselves.

Book Without Offending Humans

Download or read book Without Offending Humans written by Elisabeth de Fontenay and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study pursues the investigation Fontenay began in her magnum opus, 'The Silence of the Beasts: Philosophy Confronts Animality' with a series of essays of somewhat more topical reach. Fontenay's perspective is resolutely informed by Continental Philosophy, which brings her to articulate a very strong critique of the pragmatist frame through which animal rights are often defended. Fontenay seeks to maintain the anthropological difference between man and animal that Singer and Cavalieri openly and brazenly, upon Fontenay's account, ignore.

Book The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour

Download or read book The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour written by Chris Steed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour is an innovative conceptualisation of how the quest for a high self-worth works as a psychosocial dynamic, presenting the idea that feelings of impotence and low self-esteem induce a powerful impetus on negative human action. This book gives an account of what it means to base a whole psychological perspective on high value, which has been an understudied aspect of human action. Employing an ethnographical approach, the book uses client observations and social research to promote original solutions in an empathetic and engaging manner for psychological support services aiding isolated individuals. It considers the concept of a valuable self and examines the negative effects within the personality which can be generated when this drive for a valuable self is blocked through human devaluation or violence. The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour will appeal to academics and post-graduate students in the fields of psychology and psychotherapy, psychotherapists with specialist interests in loneliness and self-worth, and sociologists concerned with the psychology of the self.

Book excerpt: "Knowledge in the absence of wisdom is a dangerous thing." Texas archaeology student Nicolas Murray has an ironic fear of the dead. A latent power connecting him to an ancient order of Necromancers floods his mind with impossible images of battle among hive-mind predators and philosopher fishmen. When a funeral service leaves him shaken and questioning his sanity, the insidious power strands him in a land where the sky kills and earthquakes level cities. A land where the undead serve the living, and Necromancers summon warriors from ancient graves to fight in a war that spans life and afterlife. If Nicolas masters the Three Laws of Necromancy, he can use them to get home. But as he learns to raise and purify the dead-a process that makes him relive entire lifetimes in the span of a moment-the very power that could bring him home may also prevent his return. For the supreme religious leader, the Archmage Kagan, has outlawed Necromancy, and its practitioners risk torture and execution. As warring nations hunt Necromancers to extinction, countless dead in limbo await a purification that may never come. Nicolas's power could be his way home... Or it could save a world that wants him dead.

Book How to Successfully Offend Every Person in the World

Download or read book How to Successfully Offend Every Person in the World written by Daniel Drake and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's talk about stupid people. You know it. I know it. Stupid people ruin the world with their passive brains, and the most ridiculous notion about them is that they don't know they're stupid. People say that we live in a society, but a society is a wonderful and harmonious thing. We live more so in a segmented world with a mob mentality. The mob is destructive and they anchor us down in a philosophical standstill because they fear drastic change in the opposite way. Although not written to be personal, offense will be taken (practically guaranteed), because nothing hurts more than the truth. This book will delve into the topics of porn, career failure, media addiction, perceived racism, Internet dating, how your relationships crumble, and why you absorb the pain that you do. This is humanity witnessed in its awkward and un-sugarcoated form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plane hijacked to a mysterious land… And there he spoke Initially human beings were conceived to be created as four legged animals. But, suddenly it occurred to the Creative Team that if they too were made like other species, then who would take care of the rest of living beings on earth. And then, on second thoughts, they were created as a two legged species with special provision of a fertile brain and highly effective vocal cords, the two special attributes… Little did we know that by bestowing brains to humans, the Creator was providing them with two invisible horns within their skull which would prove to be far more lethal with rapacity to lock their invisible horns with those of others… and little did we know that the gift of speech would become a more dangerous weapon to fight and destroy others than even the most lethal arms and ammunitions.”
