Book Without Compromise Classic Reprint

Download or read book Without Compromise Classic Reprint written by Lilian Bennet-Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Without Compromise The Methodist and Lutheran churches, severe in dull-brown paint, led the way into the residential section, which had climbed up hill and down dale with a blissful disregard for the systematically geometrical destiny intended for it by old Simeon Randolph, for whom the town had been named. As if in revolt against the drab ugliness of Main Avenue, the streets which branched off from it made prompt promise of reform; and the farther one went from the Four Comers, the more effectively was it carried out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from No Compromise, Vol. 3 of 3 The long anxious night was over, and a dull, grey day followed, which seemed only like mitigated darkness. Uninviting as it was to most people, Miss Witherington trudged bravely down to an early Celebration, and hearing of Mrs. Montague's illness, came on straight to The Priory to ask after her old friend. Jack saw her slight figure, in a brown dress trimmed with fur, pass the window, and immediately got up from his untasted breakfast. The door was ajar, and, listening intently, he could hear everything she said in her pleasant, fresh young voice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from No Compromise, Vol. 2 of 3 Gradually a crust Of whims and fancies had grown over what was really a warm and loving heart, and as the outside world never came in contact with anything but this crust, most people set her down as a very disagreeable person, and gave her credit for few even passable qualities. Book The Foe of Compromise and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foe of Compromise and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by William Garrott Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foe of Compromise, and Other Essays The case for compromise was never put better, perhaps, than it was by moderate American statesmen after the great political compromise of 1850. That adjustment, they said, had saved the Union; and they pointed out to the defeated radicals that the noblest politics are but a compromise. The Union itself, they declared, is a compromise; so is the Constitution, and all social life, and the harmony of the entire universe. With sincere conviction and a genuine fervor they dilated on the blessings we had won by being reasonable. Had we not won peace itself? "With what instantaneous and mighty charm," cried Rufus Choate, their orator, the measures of compromise "calmed the madness and anxiety of the hour!" And not peace alone, but love. "How, in a moment, the interrupted and parted currents of fraternal feeling reunited!" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book The Repeal of the Missouri Compromise

Download or read book The Repeal of the Missouri Compromise written by Perley Orman Ray and published by . This book was released on 1908 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The repeal of the Missouri Compromise in 1854 stands conspicuous as a turning point of the American slavery controversy. It put an end forever to the long series of accommodations between the territorial claims of slavery and freedom. An apparently innocent bill to organize a territorial government west of the Missouri River provoked a gigantic and picturesque parliamentary duel in the Senate Chamber of the United States, and with the termination of that last gladiatorial combat in the arena of Congress, the day had passed for peaceful adjustments and for compromises based on mutual good faith. The estrangement of the sections was irreconcilable. The appeal to arms was the only and inevitable means of ending forever the irrepressible conflict. To advance a new explanation of the circumstances under which the repeal of the Missouri Compromise was conceived, and how the repeal happened in 1854 is the main purpose of this book.

Book On Compromise Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Compromise Classic Reprint written by John Morley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Compromise It is pretty plain that an inquiry of this kind needs to be fixed by reference to a given set of social circumstances tolerably well understood. There are some common rules as to the expedi ency of compromise and conformity, but their application is a matter of endless variety and the widest elasticity. The interesting and useful thing is to find the relation of these too vague rules to actual conditions to transform them into practical guides and real interpreters of what is right and best in thought and conduct, in a special and definite kind of emergency. According to the current assumptions of the writer and the preacher, the one commanding law is that men should 'eling to truth and right, if the very heavens fall. In principle this is universally accepted. To the partisans of authority and tradition it is as much a commonplace as to the partisans of the most absolute and unflinching rationalism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Purchase Price: Or the Cause of Compromise "Madam, you are charming! You have not slept, and yet you smile. No man could ask a better prisoner." She turned to him, smiling faintly. "I thank you. At least we have had breakfast, and for such mercy I am grateful to my jailer. I admit I was famished. What now?" With just the turn of a shoulder she indicated the water front, where, at the end of the dock on which they stood, lay the good ship, Mount Vernon, river packet, the black smoke already pouring from her stacks. In turn he smiled and also shrugged a shoulder. "Let us not ask! My dear lady, I could journey on for ever with one so young and pleasant as yourself. I will give you my promise in exchange for your parole." Now her gesture was more positive, her glance flashed more keenly at him. Book No Compromise with Slavery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from No Compromise With Slavery: An Address Delivered in the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, February 14, 1854 I. I am a believer in that portion of the Declara tion of American Independence in which it is set forth, as among self-evident - truths, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Hence, I am an Abolitionist. Hence, I cannot but regard oppression in every form - and most of all, that which turns a man into a thing - with indigna tion and abhorrence. 'not to cherish these feelings would be recreancy to principle. They who desire me to be dumb on the subject of Slavery, unless I will open my mouth in its defence, ask me to give the lie to my professions, to degrade my manhood.
