Book Above the Battle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Above the Battle Classic Reprint written by Vivian Drake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Above the Battle The word Romance, and all it 'means, is so closely allied to the average conception of the present day War Pilot that the layman can scarcely visualise the many sides of military aviation alone, nor yet the immense growth of the Corps to which he belongs. From an inconsiderable beginning - inconsiderable in the light of our present size - with few machines and few aerodromes, has grown a mighty organisation; and from a mere handful of pioneers there has arisen a vast band whose deeds have created a great Flying Service. In France, Russia, Italy, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Mace donia and Syria the pilots of the Royal Flying Corps have fought the enemy and wrung from him the utter most respect for the familiar red, white and blue rings. But this respect and our supremacy has not been won without many a bitter struggle; and it is the details of the ever changing phases of aerial warfare which, even if described with a truth akin to baldness, are by far stranger than fiction. Download or read book The Australian Flying Corps in the Western and Eastern Theatres of War 1914 1918 Classic Reprint written by Frederic Morley Cutlack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Australian Flying Corps in the Western and Eastern Theatres of War, 1914-1918 For the war-theatre of Egypt and Palestine (no. I Squadron), particularly during the early twelve months of the squadron in the desert east of the Suez Canal, the author has had access to the private diaries of lieutenant-colonel R. Williams, who served in that unit as flight-commander and squadron-commander. This personal record has proved very helpful. He also owes great thanks to Colonel Williams, the late lieutenant-colonel W. 0. Watt, and Major A. Murray Jones, sometime flight-commanders in the squadron, and to Major T. F. Rutledge, sometime squadron-commander, who read his manuscript and helped him with their comments. In the European section, containing the story of Nos. 2, 3, and 4 Squadrons, he is indebted to the late Lieutenant Colonel Watt, Major Murray Jones, and Lieutenant E. R. Dibbs, of No. 2 Squadron, to Major D. V. J. Blake, of No. 3 Squadron, and to Captain G. F. Malley and Captain A. H. Cobby, of No. 4 Squadron, for reading the manuscript and for their notes, which were of great value, on obscure points. The author had the advantage of personal acquaintance with some of the work of the three squadrons in France during 1918. Captain Andrew Lang's invaluable notes on types and development of aircraft in the British, French, and German services are published in a special appendix. To Lieutenants H. Johnston and J. J. Malone are due the notes on the development of the use of wireless telegraphy in aircraft. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Experience the chilling combat of World War I from inside an early biplane in this classic novel, by a pilot who lived through the war himself. France, 1914. The war on the land is taking to the skies . . . Pilot Tom Cundall is ready to take on the enemy in his trusty Camel fighter plane. But as he sees more and more planes shot down in flames, he begins to question the war, and what, or who, he is fighting for. There is no bitter snarl nor self-pity in this classic novel about the air war of 1914-1918, based very largely on the author’s experiences. Combat, loneliness, fatigue, fear, comradeship, women, excitement—they all are part of a brilliantly told story of war and courage by one of the most valiant pilots of the then Royal Flying Corps. Praise for Winged Victory “The greatest novel of war in the air.” —The Daily Mail (UK) ‘Beautifully written with a poet’s eye as well as a pilot’s eye.” —Evening Echo (UK) “Not only one of the best war books . . . but as a transcription of reality, faithful and sustained in its author’s purpose of re-creating the past life he knew, it is unique.” —Henry Williamson, author of Tarka the Otter

Book Nelson s History of the War Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nelson s History of the War Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by John Buchan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelson's History of the War, Vol. 2 Sir John French, as we have seen, had with him on the Mons position only two of his three army corps, the First and Second, and Allenby' s cavalry divi sion. The mission assigned to him was to protect the left Of the general French advance to the north. The first of his troops had crossed the frontier on zrst August, and during the whole of Saturday, the 22nd, the remaining battalions and batteries were coming into line. As they reached the Mons position the men were at once put to work to entrench the ground, for it had already been recognized that the first fighting must be upon the defensive. The exact force of the enemy was not known, but the French and British Flying Corps had seen enough of the German advance to make it clear that the attack would be made in considerable force, though they were still ignorant how great that force would be. The plan of the French Staff was to meet the enemy's onset along the charleroi-mons line, and after breaking his first attack, assume the Offensive, and advance, with Namur as their pivot. The success of this operation would raise the siege Of the fortress, and Open the way for the reoccupa tion of Brussels, and a junction of the British left with the Belgian army advancing from Antwerp. Book The Archaeology of the Royal Flying Corps

Download or read book The Archaeology of the Royal Flying Corps written by Melanie Winterton and published by Pen and Sword Archaeology. This book was released on 2022-10-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Winterton’s book is a good introductory effort on the haptic environment of World War I aviators and their personal artifacts."—The Journal of the Air Force Historical Foundation Archaeology provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the aviators of the First World War. Their descriptions of the sensation of flying in the open cockpits of the primitive warplanes of the day, and the artifacts that have survived from these first years of aerial combat, give us a powerful sense of what their wartime service was like and chart the beginning of our modern understanding of aviation. But the subject hasn’t been explored in any depth before, which is why Melanie Winterton’s pioneering book is so timely. Hers is the first study of the trench art, souvenirs and lucky mascots associated with the Royal Flying Corps which, in an original way, tell us so much about the experience of flying on the Western Front a century ago. Extensive quotations from the memoirs of these early airmen are combined with an analysis of the artifacts themselves. They convey something of the fear and anxiety the airmen had to grapple with on a daily basis and bring out the full significance of the poignant souvenirs they left behind. Pieces of crashed aeroplane – wooden propellers, strips of linen, fragments of metal – were recycled and circulated during the war and afterwards became the focus of attention in the domestic home. As Melanie Winterton demonstrates, these items connected the living with the deceased, which is why they are so strongly evocative even today.

Book Command Of The Air

  • Author : General Giulio Douhet

Download or read book Command Of The Air written by General Giulio Douhet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.
