Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Birds, or the Homes and Habits of Our Feathered Friends Sometimes it builds its nest in a garden strawberry-bed. Ah, little willow-warbler' we have found you out, and think you very cunning to get so near to the delicious fruit that you can pick it at your very door. No such thing, returns the willow-warbler indig nantly. I don't care for your strawberries; I never touch them; I like the flavour of a fine caterpillar better, and so I like when I can get these the easiest. Besides, the shade of the leaves makes the house nice and cool for my babies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boy Meets Bird. Boy Gets Bird. Boy Loses Bird An Urban Folktale. One day in the dead of winter, New York Times restaurant critic William Grimes looked out the window into his backyard in Queens and saw a chicken, jet black with a crimson comb. Wherever it had come from, it showed no sign of leaving, and it quickly made a place for itself among the society of resident stray cats. Before long, the chicken became the Chicken, and it began to arouse not only Grimes's protective impulses but also his curiosity. He discovered that chickens were domesticated first as fighters, not food; that egg-laying is triggered by exposure to light; that chickens were a fashion statement in Victorian days. He began to probe the mysteries of gallinaceous behavior, learning to distinguish a dust bath from a death dance and how to cater to his guest's eclectic palate. And when the Chicken began to repay his hospitality with five or six custom-laid eggs per week, Grimes had an answer to the age-old conundrum of which came first: the Chicken. And then one day, obeying some bird-brained logic of its own -- or perhaps the victim of fowl play -- the Chicken vanished, leaving Grimes eggless but with this funny, enlightening, and heartwarming tale to tell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in the year 1877, before any of the children who read this book were born. We were living on one of the great reservations in the Indian Territory. Some one knocked at the door. When the door was opened, there stood a little Indian girl, her head all covered up in a bright shawl. She was shy, as Indian girls were before they had seen many white people. Very timidly she drew her hand from under her shawl and gave to us a baby mocking-bird. Then she turned and ran down the prairie toward her buffalo-skin lodge not far away. We understood. The little girl's name was Kitty-ka-tat. She had been to our house often. She knew that we liked pets of all kinds, and birds most of all, so she had captured this one for us by a kind of snare or trap. Of course we kept it, for we did not know where its nest was. We allowed it to use the whole house for a cage. It ate wherever we ate, and slept at night on the curtain pole above the window.

Book Homes for Birds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Homes for Birds Classic Reprint written by E. R. Kalmbach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homes for Birds Many people enjoy songbirds and would like to do something to attract them to their surroundings. Birds are fascinating to look at, listen to, and study. Habits of nesting and rearing and feeding the young can be studied, as well as growth of the young from emergence from the eggs to time of departure from parental care. Building a nesting box for birds is the start of an immensely rewarding hobby - bird watching - and at the same time satisfies an urge by many to do something to attract our feathered friends. Many types of designs for bird houses are available, including several that are simple to build. All that's required are a few basic tools and materials and anyone can complete such a project given a simple design. Choice of specific design for the bird house is essential, however, as each species of bird is attracted by a different type of home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Produced in association with the National Audubon Society, Audubon Birdhouse Book explains how to build and place safe, species-appropriate bird homes for more than 20 classic North American species, from wrens to raptors. A visit to almost any home or garden center presents birders with numerous cute and colorful contraptions that are sold as bird homes. But the fact is, many of these products provide anything but a safe refuge for your feathered friends. Each of the easy-to-build boxes and shelves within is accompanied by cut lists, specially created line diagrams, and step-by-step photography, making the projects accessible to those with even the most rudimentary woodworking skills. In addition, this practical and beautifully presented guide is packed with color photography and profiles and range maps for the bird species covered—including titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, phoebes, swallows, waterfowl, and even kestrels and owls—to help the reader properly place and maintain the homes to attract birds. And because these projects are the product of years of experience and field-testing, you can be sure you’re getting the best advice regarding proper design, safe construction materials, and correct home placement to mitigate exposure to elements, pests, and predators. Finally, beyond the birdhouses, you’ll find out how you can contribute to the larger birding community and even enhance your birding experience with the aid of new technologies. Build an Audubon-approved home for these species: Bewick’s, Carolina, or House Wren; Prothonotary Warbler; Eastern, Western, or Mountain Bluebird; Ash-throated or Great Crested Flycatcher; Tree Swallow or Violet-green Swallow; Juniper, Oak, Black-crested, or Tufted Titmouse; Barred Owl; Eastern or Western Screech-owl; Barn Owl; Northern Flicker; American Kestrel; Black-capped, Carolina, or Mountain Chickadee; Wood Duck; Hooded Merganser; Purple Martin; Mourning Dove; Barn Swallow; American Robin; House Finch; and Eastern or Say’s Phoebe.
