Book Ventures Among the Arabs in Desert Tent and Town

Download or read book Ventures Among the Arabs in Desert Tent and Town written by Archibald Forder and published by . This book was released on 1905 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archibald Forder was an American missionary, born in 1863, who worked for 13 years in the Middle East, primarily in Al-Karak in Palestine, at that time part of the Ottoman Empire. 'Ventures among the Arabs is Forder's account of his work and travels in the region. Chapter 12 contains a summary overview of Arabia, with brief treatments of the geography, principal cities, government structures, economy, population and language, religion, animals, and modes of transportation. Several chapters recount Forder's largely unsuccessful attempts to enter Arabia for missionary work. Their titles convey the tone of the narrative, for example, "Attempts to enter Arabia end in Capture, Prison, and Broken Bones" and "At the Mercy of Murderers, Brigands, and Raging Seas." In Chapter 23, "Customs Substantiating Scripture," Forder describes the many similarities between contemporary Arab customs and practices mentioned in the Bible. In Chapter 24, "Arabia in its Relation to the Bible," he discusses ancient Arabia as portrayed in the Bible.

Book The Pentecostal Mission in Palestine

Download or read book The Pentecostal Mission in Palestine written by Eric Nelson Newberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pentecostal mission in Palestine is a virtually unknown episode in the history of Pentecostalism. Its story begins in 1906 at the Azusa Street Revival, from which missionaries were sent to Palestine. In its first thirty years, the Pentecostal mission in Palestine gained a foothold in Jerusalem and expanded its reach into Jordan, Syria, and Iran. It was severely tested and lost traction during the tumultuous period of the Arab Revolts, World War II, and the Partition Crisis. With the catastrophic war of 1948, the Pentecostal missionaries fled as their Arab clients were swept away in the Palestinian Diaspora. After 1948, a valiant attempt was made to revive the mission, but only with relative success. Although the Pentecostal missionaries failed in their objective of converting Jews and Muslims, they were eyewitnesses of the formative events of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Newberg argues that the Pentecostal missionaries functioned as brokers of Pentecostal Zionism. He offers a postcolonial assessment of the Pentecostal missionaries, crediting them for advocating philosemitism, yet bringing them up short for disregarding the civil rights of Palestinian Arabs, espousing Islamophobia, and contributing to the forces working against peace in the Holy Land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 'Ventures Among the Arabs, in Desert, Tent, and Town: Thirteen Years of Pioneer Missionary Life, With the Ishmaelites of Moab, Edom and Arabia The object of this book is not to gratify a love for sensational adventure, but to show how a life Wholly given up to God's service can be used and spared under circumstances varied and often seemingly hopeless, and in the hope that many may be led to venture something on behalf of that great peninsula of Arabia of which it tells. It shows that the ventures of the pioneer missionary are full of adventures, trying, exciting, and interesting, and should dispel the illusion that his life is all honey and that in far-away lands he gen erally has a good time. Excerpt: ...traveller you have here?" they asked in sharp tones, and for a moment received no reply from my astonished and frightened friends, and as I was dressed in native costume I was not discernible among the many. I rose and went toward the surly officer, telling him that I was the one he was inquiring for, and asked him what he wanted. He told me that he had been sent to arrest me and take me to the Turkish governor in a place about thirty miles distant. It was suggested by the chief that the soldiers spend the night in the camp, but they refused. They demanded animals for myself and baggage, which were soon forthcoming, and in a very few minutes we were off, I in the midst of the soldiers, and the baggage animals urged on by the Arabs, who unwillingly had been forced to undertake this night march. We rode for about three hours, during which little was said. Once the surly official cursed me and called me a "dog," because I had been the cause of them being sent post-haste to capture me. That gentleman said little else to me whilst in my company, for he got the length of my tongue, and a reminder that it was neither politic nor advisable for him to call an Englishman a dog. He took the scolding and the warning meekly, and I hope became a wiser and more cautious man; if nothing else, he certainly became a quieter one. About ten o'clock we saw the flames of campfires and soon alighted at the guest-tent. The people knew me and were sorry to see me a prisoner. They were not slow to tell the soldiers how I had helped them in times past, one man giving visible proof by showing the mark on his arm where he had been cut by a spear and I had sewn it up. That night I slept between my captors, and early next morning was roused and escorted...
