Book With Sampson Through the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book With Sampson Through the War Classic Reprint written by William Athelstane Meredith Goode and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Sampson Through the War Roosevelt during the two ante-bellum months, but the Span iards wasted their labors, because they dealt with a ser vice without system, with crews that were not drilled, and with ships that were not cared for. It was not the sprint at the end, the feverish purchase of new ships or the repair of old ones, that enabled the United States Navy to meet all emergencies without hitch. No; it was the hammer, ham mer on the hard road of routine; the result of the gradual building up, by recent administrations, of a new navy based on modern lines, whose officers were men of intelligence and training, always eager to keep in touch with European innovations, and who were probably hampered less by pol itics than any other body of public servants in the United States. Secretary Long and Mr. Roosevelt did much to foster and perfect this system of up-to-date activity; but they were not creators, though excellent manipulators. They deserve all praise for their work, especially for the addition of those finishing touches that the best of engines require before steam is turned on. Book The Female Review

Download or read book The Female Review written by Herman Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Female Review: Life of Deborah Sampson, the Female Soldier in the War of the Revolution; With an Introduction and Notes We have been fortunate in discovering among the members of the D. A. R. One who is a direct descendant of Deborah Sampson, and from whom we have received the family tree which appears in the Appendix. This lady is Miss Amy Greer Thompson of New York, a great-great-granddaughter of our heroine, and the only member of the D. A. R. Who belongs to the Society as representing a female soldier. Others have been admitted as descendants of patriotic women, who rendered substantial services to the cause of Independence, but no one of them can point to a regularly-en listed woman soldier as her ancestor. We regret that the steel plate of Deborah Sampson's portrait cannot now be found, though known to be in Dedham a few years ago; and we are therefore obliged to be content with a half-tone reproduction from the original print. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Female Review: Life of Deborah Sampson, the Female Soldier in the War of Revolution; With an Introduction and Notes Viewed in this light, the story of Deborah Sampson will be found worthy of attentive consideration. It is sufficiently roman tic in itself; but, considered as a tale of Revolutionary times, it is entitled to special regard. It affords, to some extent, a picture of those times, and opens before us scenes of trial and hard ship, of patriotism and fortitude, that enable us better to con ceive of that great conflict. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Major Operations of the Navies in the War of American Independence The contents of this volume were first contributed as a chapter, under the title of Major Operations, 1762 to the History of the Royal Navy, in seven volumes, pub lished by Messrs. Sampson Low, Marston, and Company, under the general editorship of the late Sir William Laird Clowes. For permission to republish now in this separate form, the author has to express his thanks to the publishers of that work. In the Introduction following this Preface, the author has summarized the general lesson to be derived from the course of this War of American Independence, as distinct from the particular discussion and narration of the several events which constitute the body of the treatment, These lessons he conceives to carry admonition for the present and future based upon the surest foundations; namely, upon the experi ence of the past as applicable to present conditions. The essential similarity between the two is evident in a common dependence upon naval strength. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Deborah Sampson was a young woman who enlisted and served in the Continental Army during the American War of Independence; this biography tells her remarkable story. Born in 1760 in the town of Plympton, Massachusetts, Sampson and her family strived through hardship, their poverty worsening after Deborah's father abandoned them. In her formative years, Deborah helped maintain the household; bright and capable, she became literate thanks to committed readings of the Bible with a local widow, becoming proficient at several practical skills such as weaving and carpentry. These abilities would later prove useful in her army service. The rebellion of the Thirteen Colonies against British rule shook the region. Deborah's sense of duty extended to the fight for independence; disguising her gender, she enlisted to the army early in 1782. Her initial service was short; a chapter of the Baptist church discovered her and threatened disavowal. By May 1782 she had enlisted a second time in a different regiment; in total she served a total of 17 months with valor; treatment for injuries sustained revealed her gender, and she was honorably discharged. In the modern day, Deborah Sampson is an icon of patriotism and for women's right to military service. After the war she gave lectures on her soldiery and was awarded a military pension.

This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning a Cause, World War Stories Lest We Forget, the first volume of World War stories, gave an outline of the struggle up to the time of the signing of the armistice, November 1918, and contained in general, chronological order most of the stories that to children from ten to sixteen years of age would be' of greatest interest, and give the clearest understanding of the titanic contest. This, the second volume of the same series, contains the stories of the war of the character described, that were not included in Lest We Forget, stories of the United States naval heroes, of the Americans landed in France, of the concluding events of the war, of the visit of President Wilson to Europe, and of the Peace Conference. In a word, emphasis is placed upon America's part in the struggle. This volume should be of even greater interest to American children than the first, for it tells the story of America's greatest achievement, of a nation under taking a tremendous and terrible task not for material gain, but for an ideal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Downfall of Spain: Naval History of the Spanish American War And, whilst the spectacle of our kinsmen winning such brilliant victories upon the element which we have always claimed, rightly or wrongly, as our own, appealed to us as a nation in a peculiar degree, we can yet feel deep sympathy with and compassion for Spain. There was infinite tragedy in the spectacle of a people going to certain defeat, because national pride would not permit it to abandon its colonies at the dictate of a stronger Power. We can best learn what the thoughts of Spaniards were by interrogating our own hearts as to what ours would have been under such circumstances. There is something pitiful and moving in the very poverty and resourcelessness of that unhappy squadron which the council of Spanish admirals sent to perish on the far-off beaches of Cuba; something that appeals to us with especial force in the useless heroism and devotion of the weak, ill-fed garrison of Santiago. With her medieval organisation and eighteenth-cen tury methods, Spain was, indeed, bound to succumb. In this hour of her defeat she produced not a man. What credit in the war was won by her sons, was won by her soldiers and seamen, not by her generals and admirals. Cervera was personally brave; he was chivalrous to a degree and he was badly used by the. Politicians, yet he cannot be described as a great or commanding figure. As an Englishman, who will hardly be accused of any political bias in American affairs, I cannot refrain from expressing surprise at the unjust and cruel attacks which have been made in the American press upon Admiral Sampson, or from expressing admiration for the dignity, self-restraint, and nobility of heart with which he has borne himself under them. To Englishmen his ceaseless vigilance, his wise dispositions, his correct and accurate judgment, and his high courage seem to have deserved another recompense. And that I believe is the Opinion of all Americans worthy the name. In this volume are incorporated small portions of various articles which I have written upon the war for the National Review, United Service Magazine, Ham/s Magazine, Army and Navy journal of New York, and Others, but in no case have the articles from these sources been incorporated whole. They have been re-written and te-cast, since much in them has been affected by later evidence. The description of the American ships is taken from Ironclad; in Action, edition 5, corrected and brought up to date. The loss of the Maine, which is a naval incident of the utmost interest, has been included as it logically should be in a history of the naval war. As a study of the African Methodist Episcopal Church newspaper and so of a periodical with national reach among free African Americans, Black Print Unbound is at once a massive recovery effort of a publication by African Americans for African Americans, a consideration of the nexus of African Americanist inquiry and print culture studies, and an intervention in the study of literatures of the Civil War, faith communities, and periodicals.

Book The Cause Developments and Results of the War

Download or read book The Cause Developments and Results of the War written by Sidney Dean and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause, Developments and Results of the War: An Oration Delivered Before the Municipal Authorities and Citizens of Providence, July 4, 1864 Each succeeding anniversary of the nation's birth brings them before us. Would God that their inspiration might be ours, and the portion of our children for all time to come! The seven years' war which followed this Declaration fulfilled the great unwritten law which all history has confirmed. It laid and established every stone in our altar with the cement of patriot blood. N 0 advance in the rights or liberties Of a people, no approximation to the practical working in civil government, Of man's divine endowment is allowed except upon a bloody war-path. But He who endows gives to the answering patriotism, courage and trust, the benefit Of providences more Clear and startling in their tracings back to Himself, during such a war, than can be found in times Of peace. Hence the history Of our first American Revolution is a clear chapter Of God's providential hand in war. The young Sampson Of nations came down to the red fields of carnage, and with the inspiration which came with the world's new endowment upon him, he rent the lion as if it had been a kid. Seven years from thence, he plucked the honey of an acknowledged nationality from the carcass, and gave to the modern world the ancient riddle: Out Of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. We shall yet have to bring another full comb from between the ribs Of the Old lion's cub, unless he absents himself from the path of our unity and progress.
