He put his learning to use in the service of the Popes, whose Latin expert he was for three decades. All the Papal encyclicals that were issued in Latin during the period 1931 to 1960 were written under his supervision. In skill of Latin composition he had no rival. Among the most learned cardinals of the last century, he must be numbered with Giovanni Mercati (1866-1957) and Eugène Tisserant (1884-1972). For a brief autobiographical account of his own life up to 1964, see Bacci's memoirs With Latin in the Service of the Popes, published by Arouca Press in 2020. The present volume is the translation of a small book published in memory of Cardinal Bacci by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Florence in cooperation with the Banca del Mugello Credito Cooperativo, a bank in the Mugello region of Tuscany that had its origins in a savings and loan association that Antonio Bacci helped found as a young priest. There are three contributors to the volume: Msgr. Nello Lascialfari (1923-2021) was secretary to four cardinal-archbishops of Florence, Giovanni Benelli (1921-1982, archbishop of Florence 1977-1982), Silvano Piovanelli (1924- 2016, archbishop of Florence 1983-2001), Ennio Antonelli (1936-2008, archbishop of Florence 2001-2008), and Giuseppe Betori (b. 1947, current archbishop of Florence since 2008). Carlo Nardi (b. 1951) is Professor of Patristics on the Faculty of Theology of the University of Central Italy (Florence). Pier Carlo Tagliaferri (b. 1938) is a professor, author and editor, particularly prolific in matters of local Tuscan interest. The preliminary matter by Paolo Ruffini, Pier Carlo Tagliaferri, and Archbishop Capovilla, as well as Tagliaferri's contribution entitled The Works of Antonio Cardinal Bacci, were written especially for this volume. - From the foreword

The subject appeared at that time to excite considerable interest. The article was translated into French, and, in an abridged form, into Italian; and I received through the editor, from persons entirely unknown to me, more than one suggestion that I should complete the biography, accompanied by offers of additional information for the purpose. Nevertheless, the notices of the Cardinal on which that article was founded, and which at that time comprised all the existing materials for a biography, appeared to me, with all their interest, to want the precision and the completeness which are essential to a just estimate of his attainments. Part 2 follows with a most careful rendition into English of Tully’s living, telephone-like Latin discourse. A thorough treatment and explanation of noteworthy elements of his natural talk follows with numerous references to the Encounters in Volume I. All this has students, learners, teachers, experts of the Latin language in mind and is humbly designed to deepen the understanding and appreciation of specific expressions and peculiarities of Cicero’s language itself. Part 3 provides 500 sentences consisting of from 1 to 5 words and suited for the beginnings or continuation of Latin conversations: 200 declarations, 100 questions, 100 exclamations, 100 injunctions drawn from his letters. The volume is amply indexed. All this has been done to enhance the study and use of Latin, to popularize Cicero’s correspondence, to prepare the reader for Volume III which will deal again with the letters and their usefulness for Latin conversation.

Book excerpt: The original idea for a conference on the "shapes of knowledge" dates back over ten years to conversations with the late Charles Schmitt of the Warburg Institute. What happened to the classifications of the sciences between the time of the medieval Studium and that of the French Encyclopedie is a complex and highly abstract question; but posing it is an effective way of mapping and evaluating long term intellectual changes, especially those arising from the impact of humanist scholarship, the new science of the seventeenth century, and attempts to evaluate, to apply, to reconcile, and to institutionalize these rival and interacting traditions. Yet such patterns and transformations cannot be well understood from the heights of the general history of ideas. Within the ~eneral framework of the organization of knowledge the map must be filled in by particular explorations and soundings, and our project called for a conference that would combine some encyclopedic (as well as interdisciplinary and inter national) breadth with scholarly and technical depth.

Book excerpt: Up to now the theme of the artist in the service of Italian courts has been examined in various studies focused mostly on the High Renaissance, as though the phenomenon was relevant only to the XV and XVI centuries. It actually lasted much longer, spanning the whole longue durée of the lives of the courts of the ancient regime. The present volume intends to fill this gap, presenting for the first time a comprehensive examination of the subject of the court artist from sixteenth to seventeenth century and the transformations of this role. “Court artist” is here defined as one who received a regular salary, and was therefore attached to the court by a more or less exclusive service relationship. The book is divided in six chapters: each of them examines the position of the court artist in the service of the most important ruling families in Italy (the Savoy in Turin, the Gonzaga in Mantua, the Este in Modena, the Della Rovere in Pesaro and Urbino, the Medici in Florence) and in papal Rome, a particular and unique center of power.
