Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the multiple dimensions of the antebellum Kansas tempest as a microcosm of the larger history of sectional conflict and reconciliation. It shows, through an examination of the antislavery ends and means of the American Missionary Association, the American Home Missionary Society, and the New England Emigrant Aid Company, that the northeastern free-state contingent in Kansas represented a wide spectrum of opinion on black bondage, ranging from racially egalitarian Christian abolitionist absolutism on the one hand to free labor pragmatism on the other. Nevertheless, Yankee confrontations with the allegedly parallel unprogressive forces of "slavery, rum, and Romanism" in the territory evoked compelling public images of civilization and savagery, freedom and dependence that broadened the appeal of antislavery politics in the free North on the eve of the Civil War. At the same time, For God and Mammon analyzes the ideology and dynamics of proslavery activism in Kansas, demonstrating how clashing conceptions of republicanism and capitalism helped frame the terms of debate over slavery. Finally, the book argues that the sharp polarities of slavery discourse in Kansas obscured a more ambiguous reality. Southerners resorted to fraudulent voting and appealed to anti-abolitionism, nativism, and racism not only to battle Northern elements but to score points over their proslavery whiggish rivals as well. Schisms within a competitive, business-minded pro-Southern elite contained the seeds of Mammon's triumph over political ideology in some proslavery circles and facilitated a sectional truce at the African American's expense even before the slavery question had faded from thepolitical horizon of the territory.

Book excerpt: Are you truly willing to risk everything? In Believing Jesus, Bible teacher and author Lisa Harper retraces the steps of the apostles in the book of Acts, while throwing in a few of her own crazy adventures along the way. The disciples didn’t have much of a road map after Jesus ascended to heaven, but God’s grace and spirit filled in the gaps as they moved forward. It required their willingness to risk everything to establish a new community that would change the future world. As a regular speaker on the Women of Faith® tour, Lisa has earned a reputation as a true theological scholar and hilarious storyteller—not necessarily in that order! Best-selling author and pastor Max Lucado calls Lisa one of the “best Bible tour guides around.” Believing Jesus will highlight both of Lisa’s strengths as she tackles every chapter of the Book of Acts with biblical wisdom and modern wit. Lisa keeps it real, telling stories on herself and pointing readers back to Jesus, the only one who can truly lead.

Book excerpt: What adventures lay ahead for this 18-year-old farm boy raised in the depths of the great depression? Arriving on a cattle truck at the Kansas City stock yards was not exactly the entrance of a millionaire – for you see, that was his goal – to become a millionaire. But God had other plans! He charted Al's life into another course that became an exciting journey. The story of Kansas City Youth for Christ is a love story – a three-fold love story of its founders, Dr. Al and Vidy Metsker: their individual love for the Lord, their love for each other, and the love they shared for teenagers. This is the story of the unwavering faith, intense determination, boundless vision, faithful obedience, contagious enthusiasm and personal integrity of a man and woman who were willing to put themselves at God's disposal. "God specializes in using nobodies," was Al's explanation for what happened during their 50 years of ministry together.

A social historical case study of the conflicts of conscience experienced by countless families during the Civil War” (Civil War Books and Authors). When war broke out in 1861, Christian and Elise Dubach Isely, soon to be married, found themselves in the midst of the conflict. Having witnessed the atrocities of Bleeding Kansas firsthand and fearful of what would come from this war, Christian enlisted with the 2nd Kansas Cavalry to fight alongside Union forces. During the next three years, the couple would write hundreds of letters to each other, as well as to friends and family members. Their writings survive today, providing a unique look at the Civil War—one of both military and civilian perspectives—in a passionate exchange between husband and wife in which the war, faith, and family are discussed openly and frankly. Book excerpt: The prodigal son. The good Samaritan. A treasure hidden in a field. Most of us have heard these parables before. Yet if these oft-repeated stories strike us as merely sweet, heartwarming, or sentimental, we can be sure we've misread them. Jesus's parables are simultaneously working to conceal and reveal profound spiritual truths about God, humanity, the world, and the future—and we must learn to plumb their depths. A careful reading of the biblical text reveals the surprising ways in which such seemingly simple stories rebuke, subvert, and sabotage our sinful habits, perspectives, and priorities. Discarding the notion that Jesus's parables are nothing more than moralistic fables, Jared Wilson shows how each one is designed to drive us to Jesus in awe, need, faith, and worship.
