Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. At the age of twenty-one, he went to Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended college. Worked one year on a farm in Illinois to get money to complete his education. Never saw a steam engine until he was twenty-one years old and on his way to college, but since that time he has traveled two hundred and twenty thousand miles in the United States and Canada. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brain, Vol. 4: A Journal of Neurology One has recently passed from among us in the full ripeness of years and of honours, who has left a deep impression upon our memories, of the force and versatility of his character, and of the decided and sometimes original opinions which he had formed and maintained upon many of the subjects which fell within the scope of his wide influence. For in many of the most interesting dramas which for many years past have been presented on the political or the forensic stage Sir Alexander Cockburn played one of the leading parts, and it especially fell to his lot to be engaged in contentions whose issues, if they have not greatly promoted the science of psychology, have at least gone far to shape and determine the practical question of the relations of the insane with society and its laws, both with regard to their exemptions and their disabilities. Among the former, the most remarkable and memorable was his defence of McNaughten for shooting Mr. Drummond, on the plea that he was not guilty on the ground of insanity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Master of Destiny: A Biography of the Brain With some hesitation he has consented. He has chosen to speak to us of the brain, as the most direct approach to the comprehension of the nature of man. He points out that this master organ of life holds the secret of human success, that its function is human progress, its neglect human disaster. The immensity of the retrospect of his story will create in us the wholesome effect called humility. The prospect he pictures is fraught with the terror of what may happen, but it also holds forth inspira tion to courage and is golden with hope. No man can follow this account without being inspired by a vision of the dawning of a new era of progress, not an era of greater possessions but of better use of those already possessed; of better relations between peoples and races; and being sobered by a realization that this hope lies in developing still further the efficiency of the master organ of destiny, through training and education.
