Excerpt from book: Conrad von der Rosen, my fool, when I am free again what wilt thou do ? I shall then buy myself new bells to sew to my cap. And how shall I reward thy fidelity ? Ah my dear master, only do not have me put to death. jprom fl)f Sngltsf) National love of the Germans feel no need either for free- om- dom or for equality. They are a speculative people ? ideologists ? a race of dreamers that look before and after ? that live only in the past and the future, and who have no present. Englishmen and Frenchmen have a present: to them every day brings its conflict, its resistance, and its history. The German has nothing for which to combat; and no sooner does he begin to suspect that there may possibly be things the possession of which is desirable, than philosophical wiseacres teach him to doubt the existence of such things. It cannot be denied that even Germans love freedom, but they love it after a different fashion than do other nations. An Englishman loves freedom as he loves his lawfully wedded wife. He regards her as a possession; and, if he does not treat her with special tenderness, yet, if need be, he knows howto defend her as a man should. A Frenchman loves freedom as he does his chosen bride. His love is ardent andfervent; he throws himself at her feet with the most exaggerated protestations; he will fight for her to the death; he will commit a thousand follies for her sake. A German loves freedom as he does his old grandmother. But the splenetic Briton, tired of his wife, is capable of some day putting a halter round her neck and leading her off to Smithfield for sale. The fickle Frenchman may perhaps become faithless to his bride, and will then desert her to go dancing and singing after the courtesans of the Palais Royal. But the German will...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisdom, Wit, and Pathos: Selected From the Works of Ouida One grows to love the Roman fountains as sea-born men the sea. Go where you will there is the water; whether it foams by Trevi, where the green moss grows in it like ocean weed about the feet of the ocean god, or whether it rushes reddened by the evening light, from the mouth of an old lion that once saw Cleopatra; whether it leaps high in air, trying to reach the gold cross on St. Peter's or pours its triple cascade over the Pauline granite; whether it spouts out of a great barrel in a wall in old Trastevere, or throws up into the air a gossamer as fine as Arachne's web in a green garden way where the lizards run, or in a crowded corner where the fruit-sellers sit against the wall; - in all its shapes one grows to love the water that fills Rome with an unchanging melody all through the year. And indeed I do believe all things and all traditions. History is like that old stag that Charles of France found out hunting in the woods once, with the bronze collar round its neck on which was written, "Cæsar mihi hoc donavit." How one's fancy love to linger about that old stag, and what a crowd of mighty shades come thronging at the very thought of him! But I think it was only their kindness. I have that twist in my brain, which is the curse of my countrymen - a sort of devilish quickness at doing' well, that prevents us ever doing best; just the same sort of thing that makes our goatherds rhyme per feet sonnets, and keeps them dunces before the alphabet. Book excerpt: Maria Louise Ram (1839-1908) was an English author. She wrote under the pen name Ouida. She wrote more than 40 novels, children's books and collections of short stories and essays. She was an animal rights activist and animal rescuer, and at times owned as many as thirty dogs. Her work went through several phases during her career. In her early period, her novels were a hybrid of the sensationalism of the 1860s and the proto-adventure novels dubbed "muscular fiction" that were emerging in part as a romanticization of imperial expansion. Later her work was more along the lines of historical romance, though she never stopped commenting on contemporary society. Sympathetic portraits of tragic painters and singers fill her later novels. Her works include: Under Two Flags (1867), A Dog of Flanders (1872), Bbe (1874), Bimbi (1882), Afternoon (1883) and The Waters of Edera (1900).
