Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wise Wedlock: The Whole Truth; A Book of Counsel and Instruction for All Who Seek Happiness in Marriage The demand for yet another edition of wise wedlock, following so quickly upon the appearance of its predecessor, is, of course, equally gratifying to the author and publishers; the latter, who were the pioneers Of books on sex questions, combining perfect candour with perfect wholesomeness, may be reasonably proud of the success which has attended this, as so many of their previous ventures, believing as they do that there are few public services of greater importance than to spread what is truly saving knowledge on the most vital of all human relationships. From the first, the success of wise. Wedlock was never in doubt; and the expressions of appreciation which have reached the author from readers who in these Chapters found for the first time a frank statement of truths which it concerned them most intimately to know, would fill many pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wise Wedlock: The Whole Truth; A Book of Counsel and Instruction for All Who Seek Happiness in Marriage The demand for yet another edition of Wise Wedlock, following so quickly upon the appearance of its predecessor, is, of course, equally gratifying to the author and publishers; the latter, who were the pioneers of books on sex questions, combining perfect candour with perfect wholesomeness, may be reasonably proud of the success which has attended this, as so many of their previous ventures, believing as they do that there are few public services of greater importance than to spread what is truly "saving knowledge" on the most vital of all human relationships. From the first, the success of Wise Wedlock was never in doubt; and the expressions of appreciation which have reached the author from readers who in these chapters found for the first time a frank statement of truths which it concerned them most intimately to know, would fill many pages. The writer takes this opportunity of thanking those who have written to him from far and near to bear their cordial testimony to the practical benefit they have derived from the perusal of this "Book of Counsel and Instruction." He earnestly hopes that wherever this new edition or its successors are read, his work will prove a means of preventing the manifold unhappiness which so largely springs from ignorance, and promote human wellbeing and harmony within the bonds of marriage. He must needs say a word on the subject of the Wise Wedlock Advisory Bureau, which it was found necessary to establish when questions on personal problems began to pour in. Book The Long Sexual Revolution

Download or read book The Long Sexual Revolution written by Hera Cook and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Hera Cook traces the path of sexuality in England, and shows how its route was determined by the gradual exertion of control over fertility. Most sexual activity had major economic and social costs, the most fundamental of which was the physical cost of children upon women's bodies. Around 1800 birth rates reached historical heights. Using a combination of demographic and qualitative sources, Dr Cook examines the connection between the struggle to lower fertility and the increasing repression of sexuality throughout the nineteenth century. Contraception became a viable option in the early twentieth century. The book charts the resulting slow relaxation of attitudes to sexuality and the remaking of heterosexual physical behaviour, culminating in the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

Book The Intimate State

Download or read book The Intimate State written by Teri Chettiar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intimate State explores how state-supported mental health initiatives made emotional intimacy both politically valued and personally desired during a crucial period of modern British psychiatric and cultural history. Focusing on the transformative decades following World War II, Teri Chettiar narrates the surprising story of how individual emotional wellbeing became conflated with inclusive democracy and subsequently prioritized in the eyes of scientists, politicians, and ordinary citizens. This new model of emotional health promoted nuclear families and monogamous marriage relationships as fundamental for individual and political stability and fostered unexpected collaborations between British mental health professionals and social reformers who sought to resolve the Cold War crisis in political and moral values. However, this model also generated backlash and resistance from communities who were excluded from its vision of idealized intimacy, including women, queer people, and adolescents. Ultimately, these communities would foster a new generation of activists who would turn the state agenda on its head by demanding political recognition for marginalized citizens on the basis of emotional health. Through new archival research, The Intimate State traces the rise of a modern psychiatric view of the importance of intimate relationships and the resultant political culture that continues to inform identity politics--and the politics of social equality--to this day.

Book Feminism and the Body

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Kevin
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2009-12-14
  • ISBN : 1443817848
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Feminism and the Body written by Catherine Kevin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By definition, feminism is concerned with the historical, social and political meanings of sexual difference in the human body, and the spectrum of experiences those meanings produce. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, gendered forms of violence persist, abortion remains a political issue, reproductive and cosmetic technologies and their concomitant ethical questions are proliferating, and the presence of women’s bodies in public spaces and for public consumption produces a range of anxieties about women’s well-being and the common good. Feminist scholars from across the disciplines grapple with these issues in Feminism and the Body. In so doing they continue a history of intellectual endeavor that, for centuries, has striven to identify the interplay between corporeal differences and relationships of power. This collection will take the reader on a journey into myriad domains in which a variety of discursive effects come to life in the embodied subject: from the theatres of medical surgery and law to the discussion fora of sex therapy and marriage guidance experts; from Peruvian villages of the late twentieth century to African American plays of the 1920s and 1930s; from explicitly feminist novels and films to the mainstream press and right into feminist scholarship that theorises the female body. In so doing, this collection restates and reinvigorates feminism’s long-standing, necessary and emphatic engagement with the female body.

Book Birth Control Sex and Marriage in Britain 1918 1960

Download or read book Birth Control Sex and Marriage in Britain 1918 1960 written by Kate Fisher and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first half of the twentieth century witnessed a revolution in contraceptive behaviour as the large Victorian family disappeared. This book offers a new perspective on the gender relations, sexual attitudes, and contraceptive practices that accompanied the emergence of the smaller family in modern Britain. Kate Fisher draws on a range of first-hand evidence, including over 190 oral history interviews, in which individuals born between 1900 and 1930 described their marriages and sexual relationships. By using individual testimony she challenges many of the key conditions that have long been envisaged by demographic and historical scholars as necessary for any significant reduction in average family size to take place. Dr Fisher demonstrates that a massive expansion in birth control took place in a society in which sexual ignorance was widespread; that effective family limitation was achieved without the mass adoption of new contraceptive technologies; that traditional methods, such as withdrawal, abstinence, and abortion were often seen as preferable to modern appliances, such as condoms and caps; that communication between spouses was not key to the systematic adoption of contraception; and, above all, that women were not necessarily the driving force behind the attempt to avoid pregnancy. Women frequently avoided involvement in family planning decisions and practices, whereas the vast majority of men in Britain from the interwar period onward viewed the regular use of birth control as a masculine duty and obligation. By allowing this generation to speak for themselves, Kate Fisher produces a richer understanding of the often startling social attitudes and complex conjugal dynamics that lay behind the vast changes in contraceptive behaviour and family size in the twentieth century.
