Book WISDOM AN ACCUMULATION OF KNOWLEDGE

Download or read book WISDOM AN ACCUMULATION OF KNOWLEDGE written by Andreas Sofroniou and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom: One of the most difficult explanations in all of the worldwide studies of the English philology is that of the term of 'wisdom', or that of 'to-be-wise'. To be wise one has, or exhibits reason with a capacity for discernment and the intelligent application of knowledge. As an individual he may use knowledge, thus being discerning, insightful, knowledgeable, perceptive, and sagacious. By being wise, an individual will be exercising or involving sound judgment and as such, a person is aware of his actions and his thoughtfulness. Wisdom is therefore an accumulation of philosophic, religious, or scientific learning and knowledge, with the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships, generally with accepted beliefs and attitudes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of wisdom is challenging and thought provoking. This volume sheds light on the age-old question: What is wisdom and where does it come from? Evidence of wisdom can be seen in both perception and performance, in sacred scriptures and in brain images. An eminent group of scholars from fields as diverse as theology, philosophy, medicine, biology, psychology, and linguistics were brought together to bring focus to this understudied area of scientific research. Editor Warren Brown presents his research on brain functioning, drawn from observing individuals with damage to specific neural areas, to suggest the importance of integration between hemispheres of the brain to comprehend complex situations in a way that may be termed “wise.” Diana Van Lancker also looks at hemispheres of the brain and explores studies that show that left brain functioning is related to prayers, chants, and sayings often used in religious practice. Wolfgang Mieder, recognized as the foremost scholar in the study of proverbs, explores the secular use of the biblical proverb of “A house divided against itself cannot stand” (Matt. 12:25). R. E. Clements also looks to the book of Proverbs and focuses on its ultimate goal: virtue and wholeness.

Download or read book A Time for Wisdom written by Paul T. McLaughlin and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are volatile times. Fear, suspicion, and cynicism are chronic. A mere tweet inflames the passions of millions while click-bait “hot takes” stoke the amygdalas of everyone with an Internet connection. We treat those not in our tribe as a threat and deem anyone with a different opinion as evil. Mistaking myopia for measure, we lack all sense of proportion in our judgments. We are shortsighted, mired in the present, ignorant of history, and blind to the future. We thought that technology would save us by connecting us to each other and the world’s information. Instead, it enticed our vices, encouraged our biases, and eroded the one virtue we need now more than ever: wisdom. A Time for Wisdom is for readers who feel beleaguered by the incivility of the modern world, dispirited by its coarse rhetoric and toxic partisanship. It is an invitation to escape the shallow cacophony and restore peace and perspective to our daily lives. Written by two psychologists, the book takes the best scientific research on wisdom and integrates it with timeless concepts that have, for ages, guided troubled souls through life’s hardships. From this foundation, the authors present four steps we can follow to practice wisdom in the 21st Century: Receiving knowledge. Practicing detachment. Experiencing tranquility. Cultivating transcendence. These are profound and spiritual principles that can bring us immense satisfaction when we aspire to live by them. In A Time for Wisdom, the authors show us how. They commend a course of action towards the Good, the True, and the Beautiful, towards calm and clear moral reasoning. They lead us out of the circus of contemporary life and show us a path beyond our petty self-centeredness. By journeying along that path, we can, like the great sages and scientists before us, rise above the immediacy of the moment and partake of the numinous and the infinite.

Book Living Wisdom Revised and Expanded

Download or read book Living Wisdom Revised and Expanded written by David G. Benner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much more than knowledge or even understanding, wisdom is seeing life through the eyes of an awakened heart and transformed consciousness. Rather than being the result of the accumulation of information, wisdom comes from acquiring a new mind. Buddhists speak of this new mind as enlightenment. The Christian name for it is the mind and heart of Christ. This is the basis of wisdom. Wisdom is grounded in a deep awareness of the sacredness and interconnectedness of everything in existence. It is living in alignment with the creative Spirit of Wisdom who inhabits all of creation and is our truest and deepest self. It is learning to participate in God’s transformational agenda of cosmic whole-making, this being the way in which everything that exists becomes whole in Christ. This book does not offer gems of wisdom. Instead, it seeks to facilitate the awakening of your heart and transformation of your consciousness that will allow wisdom to flow your from depths.

Book Harnessing the Power of Wisdom from Data to Wisdom

Download or read book Harnessing the Power of Wisdom from Data to Wisdom written by Andrew Targowski and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind which defines wisdom as information and the highest level of the cognition units set, composed of data, information, concept, knowledge and wisdom. The author has founded his theory of wisdom on the following assumptions: Any sane person can make wise decisions throughout their lifetime, from childhood to old age; Wise decisions need not be expert in nature; Wisdom ought to be defined in such terms as to be understood not only by experts but by an average man; Wisdom is not synonymous to intelligence; The wisdom of a given human being decides between two systems controlling man: the biological evolution (by the cross-generational chain of genes) and spirituality, whose acquired system of virtues and values influences the actions of man; Wisdom has a range of bandwidth and properties; Knowledge on what constitutes wisdom is not the same as the process of becoming a wise man. Without good life practices, one cannot be a truly wise man; Wisdom ought to be taught in schools and at colleges, since if one waits until old age to become wise, it is commonly too late to redirect ones unwise behaviour into a wise life; Wisdom is a certain kind of information; Wisdom is the most important civilisational resource and should be monitored in a way that is similar or even better than the way you monitor the use of energy, the development of population or other resources. The book is full of examples taken from real cases of applied wisdom by famous people. The review of applied wisdom is provided in the historic context as well in the interdisciplinary approach. Every person who would like to be not only informed and knowledgeable but wise should read this book and applied its recommendations.

Book Knowledge Power Wealth and Wisdom

Download or read book Knowledge Power Wealth and Wisdom written by Maurice Webb and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge involves true belief and the realization of one’s own ignorance is the precondition for its attainment. Power is similar to distilled liquor; it will intoxicate and dim the judgment of even the most scrupulous men. Wealth is frequently associated with spiritual poverty and the distribution of wealth in any society exposes its lack of justice. Wisdom is combined with the trinity of values, which are, the absolute truth, the spirit of beauty and complete goodness. The man who is neither good nor wise remains self-satisfied. He has no desire to acquire that to which he feels no need. Aristotle insisted that life is the activity of the mind. Plato insisted that life is a preparation for death.

Book Scientific Research in Education

Download or read book Scientific Research in Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, historians, and philosophers of science have debated the nature of scientific research in education for more than 100 years. Recent enthusiasm for "evidence-based" policy and practice in educationâ€"now codified in the federal law that authorizes the bulk of elementary and secondary education programsâ€"have brought a new sense of urgency to understanding the ways in which the basic tenets of science manifest in the study of teaching, learning, and schooling. Scientific Research in Education describes the similarities and differences between scientific inquiry in education and scientific inquiry in other fields and disciplines and provides a number of examples to illustrate these ideas. Its main argument is that all scientific endeavors share a common set of principles, and that each fieldâ€"including education researchâ€"develops a specialization that accounts for the particulars of what is being studied. The book also provides suggestions for how the federal government can best support high-quality scientific research in education.
