Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisconsin Journal of Education, 1874, Vol. 4: Organ of the State Teachers' Association and of the Department of Public Instruction My proposition is that, apart from prac tical considerations, the Latin and Greek languages are intrinsically the best for the purposes of discipline: so much the best, that, if a course were exclusively disciplinary, there should be no hesita tion, and in any course that admits of even but two languages, one of these should be one of the two. Book Journal of Education Vol 27

Download or read book Journal of Education Vol 27 written by Adolphus Egerton Ryerson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Education, Vol. 27: January, 1874 Instruction in these subjects should, in my opinion, be rendered in erative. I speak from practical experience when I say t at the subj ects above mentioned may be rendered in tensely interesting to boys, and that the love for such studies which a competent teacher could evoke, would be a powerful aid to intellectual discipline. Much may be accomplished by extremely simple means how much is only known to those who are accustomed to devise new methods of experimental demonstra tion. I do not think that the cost of apparatus could be regarded as an objection of the least weight to the introduction of science into our public schools. In addition to elementary physics and chemistry, I should recommend the introduction of botany, and to these three sciences I would, for the present, con fine attention. With regard to the time to be devoted to science, six or seven hours a week would be of immense importance; even less than this would at the end of three or four years, sum itself up to something extremely valuable. Download or read book The History of Wisconsin Volume III written by Robert C. Nesbit and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the years from 1873-1893 lacked the well known, dramatic events of the periods before and after, this period presented a major transformation in Wisconsin's economy. The third volume in the History of Wisconsin series presents a balanced, comprehensive, and witty account of these two decades of dynamic growth and change in Wisconsin society, business, and industry. Concentrating on three major areas: the economy, communities, and politics and government, this volume in the History of Wisconsin series adds substantially to our knowledge and understanding of this crucial, but generally little-understood, period.

Book Women Philosophers Volume I

Download or read book Women Philosophers Volume I written by Dorothy G. Rogers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illuminating a significant moment in the development of both American and feminist philosophical history, this book explores the pioneering thought of the women in the early American Idealist movement and outgrowths of it in the late-nineteenth century. Dorothy Rogers specifically examines the ideas of women who entered philosophical discourse through education and social activism. She begins by discussing innovative educators, some of whom were members of the influential Idealist movement in St. Louis, Missouri in the eighteen-sixties and seventies. She then looks at the ideas and impact of women who were independent scholars and social and political activists. Throughout the volume, Rogers explores how Idealist thought developed, matured, and was transformed over time – across lines of race, culture, and socio-economic class. Several of the women discussed were ardent feminists and activists: Mary Church Terrell, Anna C. Brackett, Grace C. Bibb, Ana Roqué, Ellen M. Mitchell, Lucia Ames Mead, Jane Addams, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and Luisa Capetillo. By providing exciting new insights into the work of these early women philosophers and introducing the next generation of women who shared the same ideals and influences, Rogers deftly elucidates the genealogy of women's thought as it developed across North America.
