Book excerpt: A cross-country drive from California to North Carolina in the dead of winter might seem like a burden to some, but not to Ben Erlandson. He sets off on his life-changing journey after losing his job and breaking up with his fiancée, knowing that he can no longer afford the high cost of living in San Francisco. The trip gives him the perfect opportunity to explore and take pictures of the southern portion of the United States, and he relishes the dramatic scenery of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. He spends time at campsites and takes in beautiful landscapes, all the while asking himself questions about our place in the natural world. He also considers how technological tools and systems play into how we interact with each other and our environment. Written in a diary format, you'll be thrilled by the natural beauty, unforgettable encounters, and discoveries that define Winter South 02014.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining Rural: Urbanormative Portrayals of Rural Life examines the ways in which rural people and places are being portrayed by popular television, reality television, film, literature, and news media in the United States. It is also an examination of the social processes that reinforce urbanormative standards that normalize urban life and render rural life as something unusual, exotic, or deviant. This includes exploring the role of the media as agenda setting agent, informing people what and how to think about rural life. Further it includes scrutinizing the institution of formal education that promotes a homogenous urban-oriented curriculum, while in the process, marginalizing the unique characteristics of local rural communities. These contributions are some of the only studies of their kind, investigating popular cultural representations of rural life, while providing powerful evidence and unique challenges for an urban society to rethink and reimagine rural life, while confronting the many stereotypes and myths that exist.

Book Building and Delivering Sustainability Solutions Insights Methods and Case Studies

Download or read book Building and Delivering Sustainability Solutions Insights Methods and Case Studies written by Nathaniel K. Newlands and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustaining ecosystems to deliver what people need and value, while mitigating and adapting to global climate change and extreme event impacts, presents a complex set of environmental, economic, and social challenges in ensuring resilient and sustainable food production. The Climate Smart Landscape (CSL) approach has emerged as an integrated management strategy to address the increasing pressures on agricultural production, ecosystem conservation, rural livelihoods, climate change mitigation and adaptation. Deploying cheaper, more accurate, and efficient technology enables the harnessing of big data for use in solving sustainability challenges. With improved integrated analytical frameworks, statistical approaches, spatially- explicit models and indices, the CSL approach can be further developed and applied for more resilient, productive, and sustainable ecosystems. This eBook brings together original research, review, hypothesis, theory, and technology report articles, involving 87 authors from 9 countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. These articles present new methodological and technological innovation, findings, and insights across four themes: (1) landscape productivity and crop suitability, (2) variable crop requirements for water and nutrients, (3) crop health status, phenology, and phenotyping, and (4) crop disease assessment and prediction under integrated pest management (IPM).

Book Final Fire

Download or read book Final Fire written by Michael Mitchell and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See the world through a photographer’s eyes Final Fire is a companion piece to Mitchell’s much-praised 2004 memoir, The Molly Fire, a finalist for both the Writers’ Trust Drainie-Taylor Biography Prize and the Governor General’s Award for Non-fiction, and a Globe and Mail Best Book of the Year. Nearly a half century ago, Mitchell abandoned a safe and secure academic career to become a “cowboy” with a camera and a keyboard. While he has always kept one foot planted firmly in the arts, as a working photographer his search for adventure took him through the Americas, into the High Arctic, across Europe, on to the Middle East, India, and the Far East. He photographed famous athletes, musicians, actors, politicians, revolutionaries, and more than a few criminals. The sum of these scary, strange, heartrending, and funny episodes is one man’s prescription for how to live in a bizarre and, best of all, never boring world. It is also a book about loss. Mitchell reflects on the invention of photography and its transformative effect on world culture and pays tribute to fellow photographers who led remarkable and frequently obsessive lives.

  • Author : Amanda Ripley
  • Publisher : Harmony
  • Release : 2009-06-16
  • ISBN : 0307352900
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book The Unthinkable written by Amanda Ripley and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how human beings react to danger–and what makes the difference between life and death Today, nine out of ten Americans live in places at significant risk of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism, or other disasters. Tomorrow, some of us will have to make split-second choices to save ourselves and our families. How will we react? What will it feel like? Will we be heroes or victims? In her quest to answer these questions, award-winning journalist Amanda Ripley traces human responses to some of recent history’s epic disasters, from the explosion of the Mont Blanc munitions ship in 1917–one of the biggest explosions before the invention of the atomic bomb–to the journeys of the 15,000 people who found their way out of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. To understand the science behind the stories, Ripley turns to leading brain scientists, trauma psychologists, and other disaster experts. She even has her own brain examined by military researchers and experiences, through realistic simulations, what it might be like to survive a plane crash into the ocean or to escape a raging fire. Ripley comes back with precious wisdom about the surprising humanity of crowds, the elegance of the brain’s fear circuits, and the stunning inadequacy of many of our evolutionary responses. Most unexpectedly, she discovers the brain’s ability to do much, much better–with just a little help.

Book Epistemologies of the South

Download or read book Epistemologies of the South written by Boaventura de Sousa Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of 'cognitive injustice': the failure to recognise the different ways of knowing by which people across the globe run their lives and provide meaning to their existence. Boaventura de Sousa Santos shows why global social justice is not possible without global cognitive justice. Santos argues that Western domination has profoundly marginalised knowledge and wisdom that had been in existence in the global South. She contends that today it is imperative to recover and valorize the epistemological diversity of the world. Epistemologies of the South outlines a new kind of bottom-up cosmopolitanism, in which conviviality, solidarity and life triumph against the logic of market-ridden greed and individualism.

Download or read book Losing Hearts and Minds written by Kate Imy and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing Hearts and Minds explores the loss of British power and prestige in colonial Singapore and Malaya from the First World War to the Malayan Emergency. During this period, British leaders relied on a growing number of Asian, European and Eurasian allies and servicepeople, including servants, police, soldiers, and medical professionals, to maintain their empire. At the same time, British institutions and leaders continued to use racial and gender violence to wage war. As a result, those colonial subjects closest to British power frequently experienced the limits of belonging and the broken promises of imperial inclusion, hastening the end of British rule in Southeast Asia. From the World Wars to the Cold War, European, Indigenous, Chinese, Malay, and Indian civilians resisted or collaborated with British and Commonwealth soldiers, rebellious Indian troops, invading Japanese combatants, and communists. Historian Kate Imy tells the story of how Singapore and Malaya became sites of some of the most impactful military and anti-colonial conflicts of the twentieth century, where British military leaders repeatedly tried—but largely failed—to win the "hearts and minds" of colonial subjects.

Download or read book Hellships Down written by Michael Sturma and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 12 September 1944, a wolfpack of U.S. submarines attacked the Japanese convoy HI-72 in the South China Sea. Among the ships sunk were two carrying Allied prisoners of war. Men who had already endured the trials of Japanese captivity faced a renewed struggle for survival at sea. This book tells the broader story of the HI-72 convoy through the stories of two survivors: Arthur Bancroft, who was rescued by an American submarine, and Charles "Rowley" Richards, who was rescued by the Japanese. The story of these men represents the thousands of Allied POWs who suffered not only the atrocious conditions of these Japanese hellships, but also the terror of friendly fire from their own side's submarines. For the first time, the personal, political and legal aftermath of these men's experiences is fully detailed. At its heart, this is a story of survival. Charting the survivors' fates from rescue to their attempts at retribution, this book reveals the trauma that continued long after the war was over.
