Book Experimental Investigation of the Problem of Surface Roughness

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Problem of Surface Roughness written by H. Schlichting and published by . This book was released on 1937 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the universal laws of turbulent velocity distribution at rough and smooth walls, there is in the present work presented a method that allows surface roughness tests and in particular, measurements on the roughness of ship surfaces to be carried out in a much simpler manner. The types of roughness investigated were in the form of flat, rough plates installed in a square-section rectangular channel, the other three walls always being smooth. Twenty-one plates of various roughness were investigated, the roughness elements being the following: spheres of diameter 0.41 and 0.21, respectively, spherical segments, cones, and "short" and "long" angles.

Book NACA Wartime Reports Series L

Download or read book NACA Wartime Reports Series L written by John A. Zalovcik and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight investigation was made on a wing section of a P-47D airplane to determine the effect of roughness on wing profile drag with transition fixed far forward. Surveys of the wake were made for two surface conditions with transition fixed by a thread at 5 percent chord back of the leading edge on the upper and lower surfaces. One of the surveys was made with the surfaces smooth; the other survey was made with the surfaces roughed by an application of camouflage paint behind the thread. The surface roughness produced by the camouflage paint was made up of particles of about 0.0012 inch in height and numbering roughly 40,000 per square inch.

Book Flight Investigation at High Speeds of Profile Drag of Wing of a P 47D Airplane Having Production Surfaces Covered with Camouflage Paint

Download or read book Flight Investigation at High Speeds of Profile Drag of Wing of a P 47D Airplane Having Production Surfaces Covered with Camouflage Paint written by John A. Zalovcik and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: A flight investigation was made at high speeds to determine the profile drag of a P-47D airplane wing having production surfaces covered with camouflage paint. The profile drag of a wing section somewhat out-board of the flap was determined by means of wake surveys in tests made over a range of airplane lift coefficients from 0.06 to 0.69 and airplane Mach numbers from 0.25 to 0.78. The results of the tests indicated that a minimum profile-drag coefficient of 0.0097 was attained for lift coefficients from 0.16 to 0.25 at Mach numbers less than 0.67. Below the Mach number at which compressibility shock occurred, variations in Mach number of as much as 0.2 appeared to have no effect on profile-drag coefficient. The variation in Reynolds number corresponding to this variation in Mach number, however, was appreciable and may have had some effect on the results obtained. Comparison of the Mach number at which shock losses were first evident in the wake with the critical Mach number indicated that shock was not evident until the critical Mach number was exceeded by at least 0.025.

Book Effect of Milling Machine Roughness and Wing Dihedral on the Supersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Highly Swept Wing

Download or read book Effect of Milling Machine Roughness and Wing Dihedral on the Supersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Highly Swept Wing written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to assess the effect of surface finish on the longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic characteristics of a highly-swept wing at supersonic speeds. A study of the effects of wing dihedral was also made. Included in the tests were four wing models: three models having 22.5 degrees of outboard dihedral, identical except for surface finish, and a zero-dihedral, smooth model of the same planform for reference. Of the three dihedral models, two were taken directly from the milling machine without smoothing: one having a maximum scallop height of 0.002 inches and the other a maximum scallop height of 0.005 inches. The third dihedral model was handfinished to a smooth surface. Tests were conducted in Test Section 1 of the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at NASA-Langley over a range of Mach numbers from 1.8 to 2.8, a range of angle of attack from -5 to 8 degrees, and at a Reynolds numbers per foot of 2 x 10(6). Selected data were also taken at a Reynolds number per foot of 6 x 10(6). Drag coefficient increases, with corresponding lift-drag ratio decreases were the primary aerodynamic effects attributed to increased surface roughness due to milling machine grooves. These drag and lift-drag ratio increments due to roughness increased as Reynolds number increased. Darden, Christine M. Langley Research Center...
