Book excerpt: The effects of spanwise distribution of longitudinal and vertical components of gust velocity and longitudinal distribution of the lateral component on the lateral-directional response of a hovering VTOL aircraft are analyzed. Results show that spanwise effects of the longitudinal and vertical components are negligible, and the longitudinal distribution of the lateral component is significant in computing the power spectral densities of gust-induced side force, yawing moment, rolling moment, and the aircraft sideslip, yaw, and roll root-mean-square response angles. If the gust-induced angles of attack and sideslip angles are in the nonlinear range of lift curve slope, the above conclusions, which are based on linear aerodynamic theory, may not hold and an analysis based on momentum transfer of gust energy to the aircraft is recommended. Flow field interaction effects due to engine intake and exhaust also were not considered. (Author).

Intensity, frequency, time of occurrence, prevailing conditions, etc., of the daily maximum vertical gusts (i.e., updraft and downdraft) are determined. The results are compared with the vertical gusts associated with the daily maximum horizontal gust. The intent of this summarization of vertical wind speed data is to provide a general description of wind flow in the lower 150 meters of the atmosphere for the identification of hazards involved in wind shear encounters relative to ascent and descent of the Space Shuttle and conventional aircraft. The gust model developed accounts for not only the effect of body axis gust velocities applied at the center of gravity, but also includes the effect of gust gradients along the length and span of the aircraft. The latter effect is usually neglected but can be quite significant with small aircraft at high speeds. Thus, the model varies as a function of both aircraft size and velocity. An analog and digital model is developed for use with large-scale aircraft simulations or less sophisticated linearized aircraft models. (Author).
