Book excerpt: Soil erosion by wind is significant to Earth systems and human health. There is a strong interest in understanding the factors and processes of soil erosion by wind as well as in developing and applying methods to control dust emission from soils and to stabilize active sands. The Special Issue contains information on applications of natural and synthetic materials to reduce soil erosion, development of materials and methods, experimental methods and modeling, impacts on the soil quality and the environments, and quantification of the efficiency in dust control and sand stabilization applications.

Book Sand Dune Conservation Management and Restoration

Download or read book Sand Dune Conservation Management and Restoration written by J. Patrick Doody and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the development of temperate coastal sand dunes and the way these have been influenced by human activity. The different states in which the habitat exists both for the beach/foredune and inland dune are reviewed against the pressures exerted upon them. Options for management are considered and the likely consequences of taking a particular course of action highlighted. These options include traditional approaches to the conservation and management of wildlife and landscapes as well as habitat restoration. The way the value of the areas changes under different management regimes is considered mainly from an environmental perspective. Consideration is given to new approaches to management and restoration including adopting a more dynamic approach. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with policy formulation and /or actively managing coastal areas.

Book Miscellaneous Publication

Download or read book Miscellaneous Publication written by Robert L. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Establishing and maintaining permanent vegetation has proved to be the most effective and efficient means of stabilizing coastal sand dunes. The dune areas on the Pacific coast of North America are the result of accelerated erosion caused primarily by the destruction of a cover of native vegetation. In some areas the climax cover was herbaceous, in others it was woody, and in still others it was a combination of herbaceous and woody plants. The choice of plants for the reconstruction of a permanent cover depends on the inherent limitations of the site and the intended land use for the area.

Book Stabilizing Sand Dunes on the Pacific Coast with Woody Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stabilizing Sand Dunes on the Pacific Coast with Woody Plants Classic Reprint written by Robert L. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stabilizing Sand Dunes on the Pacific Coast With Woody Plants Figure l. - Stabilized coastal sand dunes are used for recreation, provided pre caution is taken to preserve the permanent cover from damage.of extensive areas of eroding dunes on the north Pacific coast. They pointed out that trees and shrubs were essential to erosion control on some sites, while on others the choice between herbaceous and woody perennials for permanent stabilization depended on the use of the area. The land capability and the economic and social considerations determine the use of the stabilized area. Most of the dune areas on the Pacific coast of North America are in land-capability classes VII and VIII. 2 Such lands have severe limitation for use because of the erosion hazard, low fertility, or low water-supply capacity. Small areas of class VI land with slightly less erosion hazard and of excessively wet class V land are interspersed with the class VII and VIII land of the dunes. Small areas of class III and IV land occur on some coastal dunes. These may be used for cultivated crops or pasture, but they require large amounts of fertilizer and supplemental irrigation. If cultivated crops are grown, extreme precautions must be taken to prevent wind erosion. The same conditions that preclude the use of stabilized dunes for cultivated crops or pasture also limit their use for the production of major forest products such as lumber, poles, or pulpwood. Minor forest products such as Christmas trees, charcoal, and florist greenery are possible with intensive culture when areas are near markets. The use of coastal dunes for recreation is consistent with both their land capability and their location. Large centers of population are usually located near the coast, and improved highways make them readily accessible to vacationers. Recreational use of coastal dune areas is enhanced by the proper use of trees and shrubs for permanent stabilization (fig. Precautions must be taken to preserve the permanent cover from damages by overuse, careless use, and fire. Book Aeolian Sand and Sand Dunes

Download or read book Aeolian Sand and Sand Dunes written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is more than half a century since the publication of R. A. Bagnold’s classic book The physics of blown sand and desert dunes, and it is a tribute to the quality of Bagnold’s work that many of the fundamental principles which he developed - main valid today. His book continues to be essential reading for any serious s- dent of aeolian processes. However, the past two decades have seen an explosion in the scale of research dealing with aeolian transport processes, sediments, and landforms. Some of this work has been summarized in review papers and edited conference proceedings, but this book provides the rst attempt to review the whole eld of aeolian sand research. Inevitably, it has not been possible to cover all - pects in equal depth, and the balance of included material naturally re ects the - thors’ own interests to a signi cant degree. However, our aim has been to provide as broad a perspective as possible, and to provide an entry point to an extensive mul- disciplinary scienti c literature, some of which has not been given the attention it deserves in earlier textbooks and review papers. Many examples are drawn from existing published work, but the book also makes extensive use of our own research in the Middle East, Australia, Europe, and North America. The book has been written principally for use by advanced undergraduates, po- graduates, and more senior research workers in geomorphology and sedimentology.
