Book Playing the Canterbury Tales

Download or read book Playing the Canterbury Tales written by Andrew Higl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing the Canterbury Tales addresses the additions, continuations, and reordering of the Canterbury Tales found in the manuscripts and early printed editions of the Tales. Many modern editions present a specific set of tales in a specific order, and often leave out an entire corpus of continuations and additions. Andrew Higl makes a case for understanding the additions and changes to Chaucer's original open and fragmented work by thinking of them as distinct interactive moves in a game similar to the storytelling game the pilgrims play. Using examples and theories from new media studies, Higl demonstrates that the Tales are best viewed as an "interactive fiction," reshaped by active readers. Readers participated in the ongoing creation and production of the tales by adding new text and rearranging existing text, and through this textual transmission, they introduced new social and literary meaning to the work. This theoretical model and the boundaries between the canonical and apocryphal texts are explored in six case studies: the spurious prologues of the Wife of Bath's Tale, John Lydgate's influence on the Tales, the Northumberland manuscript, the ploughman character, and the Cook's Tale. The Canterbury Tales are a more dynamic and unstable literary work than usually encountered in a modern critical edition.

Book The Men Who United the States

Download or read book The Men Who United the States written by Simon Winchester and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Simon Winchester never disappoints, and The Men Who United the States is a lively and surprising account of how this sprawling piece of geography became a nation. This is America from the ground up. Inspiring and engaging.” —Tom Brokaw Simon Winchester, acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Atlantic and The Professor and the Madman, delivers his first book about America: a fascinating popular history that illuminates the men who toiled fearlessly to discover, connect, and bond the citizenry and geography of the U.S.A. from its beginnings. How did America become “one nation, indivisible”? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America’s most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators, such as Lewis and Clark and the leaders of the Great Surveys; the builders of the first transcontinental telegraph and the powerful civil engineer behind the Interstate Highway System. He treks vast swaths of territory, from Pittsburgh to Portland, Rochester to San Francisco, Seattle to Anchorage, introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today’s United States. Throughout, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree. Featuring 32 illustrations throughout the text, The Men Who United the States is a fresh look at the way in which the most powerful nation on earth came together.

Book William De Braose Squire of Winchester

Download or read book William De Braose Squire of Winchester written by Trent Stephens and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William was aware that something had gone terribly wrong. This tournament, which was supposed to be friendly, had suddenly turned deadly. Sir John de Elton came riding up the hill at full gallop. He reined up at the brink of the hill, where William was kneeling, and drew his sword. "Thomas," he yelled. "Protect the Lord de Braose!" The Lord de Braose? William thought, as he opened his eyes and looked up at the young knight. My father is the Lord de Braose, not me. "What are you doing?" William demanded. "Where is my father?" "He has fallen, My Lord," Sir John replied. "Your father has been murdered." William de Braose, age eleven, had ridden beside his father, a powerful Norman Lord, to his first tournament. Isolde had warned him before they left home that his father was in great danger, but what did she, a little girl, know? Some said she had the second sight, but for William she was nothing but a pest. Very few people were aware of the great storm brewing that summer of 1232 within the English court. Little did William know that he would soon be thrust into the center of that storm. Book one in this fourteen-book series, William de Braose, Squire of Winchester, describes William's adventures on his way to the tournament that will change his life forever. At each castle where the Braose entourage stops on its week-long trip to the Salisbury tournament, it is treated to the finest food and best stories in the land. William thrills to the tales from Britain's rich literary heritage. His excitement can hardly be contained as the entourage finally reaches Salisbury and the Last Tournament begins. Trent Stephens

Book The Map That Changed the World

Download or read book The Map That Changed the World written by Simon Winchester and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1793, a canal digger named William Smith made a startling discovery. He found that by tracing the placement of fossils, which he uncovered in his excavations, one could follow layers of rocks as they dipped and rose and fell—clear across England and, indeed, clear across the world—making it possible, for the first time ever, to draw a chart of the hidden underside of the earth. Smith spent twenty-two years piecing together the fragments of this unseen universe to create an epochal and remarkably beautiful hand-painted map. But instead of receiving accolades and honors, he ended up in debtors' prison, the victim of plagiarism, and virtually homeless for ten years more. The Map That Changed the World is a very human tale of endurance and achievement, of one man's dedication in the face of ruin. With a keen eye and thoughtful detail, Simon Winchester unfolds the poignant sacrifice behind this world-changing discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Best Tool of the Millennium The seeds of Rybczynski's elegant and illuminating new book were sown by The New York Times, whose editors asked him to write an essay identifying "the best tool of the millennium." The award-winning author of Home, A Clearing in the Distance, and Now I Sit Me Down, Rybczynski once built a house using only hand tools. His intimate knowledge of the toolbox -- both its contents and its history -- serves him beautifully on his quest. One Good Turn is a story starring Archimedes, who invented the water screw and introduced the helix, and Leonardo, who sketched a machine for carving wood screws. It is a story of mechanical discovery and genius that takes readers from ancient Greece to car design in the age of American industry. Rybczynski writes an ode to the screw, without which there would be no telescope, no microscope -- in short, no enlightenment science. One of our finest cultural and architectural historians, Rybczynski renders a graceful, original, and engaging portrait of the tool that changed the course of civilization.
