Book Willingness to Pay for Clean Air Evidence from the UK

Download or read book Willingness to Pay for Clean Air Evidence from the UK written by Giorgio Maarraoui and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-02-17 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses life satisfaction data to help the design of climate mitigation policies in the United Kingdom. We assess the effects of the exposure to ambient pollutants on long-term life satisfaction and short-term mental health in the UK. We estimate augmented Cobb-Douglas utility functions using pooled and random effects ordinal logit models. Results show that increases in NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 significantly decrease the odds of longterm happiness and short-term mental health in the UK. The willingness to pay for clean air is also significant and increases with level of education. These measurements derived can be used as benchmarks for pollution abatement subsidies or pollution taxes and can help in projecting a more comprehensive assessment of costs and benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a consistent view, supported by the environmental Kuznets curve and popularized by the World Development Report, that middle-income countries place less value on the quality of environmental goods than rich countries. This book, therefore, investigates whether people in Ukraine, lower-middle-income country, do pay attention to air quality or not, comparing to people in high-income countries. Estimation of marginal willingness to pay for the air quality improvement using hedonic price analysis is conducted for housing market in Kyiv (Ukraine). The analysis should be especially useful for policy makers, who could compare costs associated with the reduction in air pollution and benefits from improving the air quality while implementing environmental policies, real estate specialists, and economists.

Book Willingness to Pay WTP for Air Quality Improvements

Download or read book Willingness to Pay WTP for Air Quality Improvements written by Kawa Ng and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Environmental goods such as clean air and water do not enter the commercial market; nonmarket valuation methods are required to place monetary values on such public goods. Fairbanks, Alaska has a history of troubling air quality and is facing nonattainment with the ERA in terms of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration. The objective of this study is to estimate the economic benefits / willingness to pay (WTP) for a 50% reduction of PM2.5 using two nonmarket valuation methods: Contingent Valuation (CVM) and Benefit Transfer (BTM). Open-ended (OE) and interval open-ended (IOE) formats were used in the CVM split sample survey. From the BTM, the estimated benefit of air quality improvement for the city of Fairbanks, Alaska is $1,006,607 per annum. The estimated benefit from the OE survey is $765,393 p.a., while the IOE survey produced the range of $525,398 p.a. and $1,914,313 p.a."--Leaf iii.

Book Characteristics of UK Consumers Willingness to Pay for Green Energy

Download or read book Characteristics of UK Consumers Willingness to Pay for Green Energy written by Ivan Diaz-Rainey and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a national survey of the UK population this paper explores demographic, attitudinal and behavioural characteristics of UK consumers who have stated a willingness to pay a premium for green energy. Using a number of ordered probit models it is found that willing consumers tend to have higher income, are better informed with respect to energy matters, show concern for the environment and believe individual actions can make a difference to environmental decay. More generally, attitudinal variables provide the greatest explanatory power, while behavioural variables performed poorly. These results are consistent with the findings of recent North American studies and represent an addition to previous research on the subject in the UK. It is concluded that, if policy makers and utility marketeers want a role for consumers in funding new renewable investment, individuals need to be persuaded that, not only action is necessary, but also that others are partaking and that this critical mass is making a difference.

Book How Much Have Global Problems Cost the World

Download or read book How Much Have Global Problems Cost the World written by Bjørn Lomborg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are often blanket claims that the world is facing more problems than ever but there is a lack of empirical data to show where things have deteriorated or in fact improved. In this book, some of the world's leading economists discuss ten problems that have blighted human development, ranging from malnutrition, education, and climate change, to trade barriers and armed conflicts. Costs of the problems are quantified in percent of GDP, giving readers a unique opportunity to understand the development of each problem over the past century and the likely development into the middle of this century, and to compare the size of the challenges. For example: how bad was air pollution in 1900? How has it deteriorated and what about the future? Did climate change cost more than malnutrition in 2010? This pioneering initiative to provide answers to many of these questions will undoubtedly spark debate amongst a wide readership.

Book Project Appraisal and Valuation of the Environment

Download or read book Project Appraisal and Valuation of the Environment written by P. Abelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-06-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The book is a pioneering attempt to see exactly what difference economic valuation of environmental effects would have made to six actual, on-going, development projects, if it had been done at the time of appraisal. It combines theoretical rigour with applied economic skills, presented with robust common sense.' - James Winpenny, Overseas Development Institute This book is a practical and readable guide to valuing the environment and the implications for public investment and policy, useful for students as well as professional economists, policy-makers, engineers, environmental and social planners. It describes how the environment can be valued and how these valuation concepts can be applied to investment decisions. The book provides first a general introduction to the key issues and concepts, considering the nature and magnitude of environmental problems, the cost-benefit method of evaluation and detailed methods for valuing the environment. It then analyses in detail six case-studies, based on actual or proposed major investment projects by the UK Overseas Development Administration or the World Bank. These include water quality in China, the supply of electricity in Bangladesh, slum improvements in India, mass transit in Nigeria, forest conservation in Kenya and soil quality in Bolivia. Thus the book is expected to be of special interest to professionals and students in developing countries, although much of the material has general application in developed as well as in developing countries.

Book Cost benefit Analysis

Download or read book Cost benefit Analysis written by James H. Meisel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is increasingly concerned with bridging the developmental gap between the developed and developing countries. With the establishment of a number of institutions for funding the projects including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and many other agencies, the need to develop mechanisms to assess economically viable projects is more important than ever. The Social-Cost Benefit Analysis (SCBA) is an important technique used in formulating, appraising, and evaluating projects. It is a facet of applied welfare economics which is increasingly being used to identify and assess public projects in both developing and developed countries. This volume presents a comprehensive view of cost-benefit analysis in its theoretical and applied dimensions. Both theory and case studies are presented. The theoretical setting for Cost-Benefit Analysis is established by the first five chapters-"Spatial General Equilibrium and Cost-Benefit Analysis," by David M. Newbery; "Optimum Growth Theory and Social Time Preference: A Computerized Mathematical Modeling Exercise to Choose a Social Discount Rate," by Sardar M. N. Islam; "A Theoretical Inquiry of the Axiomatic Consistency of Distributional Weights used in Cost-Benefit Analysis," by Giuseppe Munda; "The Output Gap: Measurement, Related Concepts, and Policy Implications," by Parameswar Nandakumar; and "A Methodological Comparison of Theoretical Approaches in Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation," by John C. Whitehead. This book will be useful as a reference text by professors and students in project appraisal classes and will be of equal value to analysts, planners, and interested general readers.
