Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elswyth Thane is best known for her Williamsburg series, seven novels published between 1943 and 1957 that follow several generations of two families from the American Revolution to World War II. Dawn's Early Light is the first novel in the series. In it, Colonial Williamsburg comes alive. Thane centers her novel around four major characters: the Aristrocratic St. John Sprague, who becomes George Washington's aide; Regina Greensleeves, a Virginia beauty spoiled by a season in London; Julian Day, a young schoolmaster who arrives from England on the eve of the war and initially thinks of himself as a Tory; and Tibby Mawes, one of his less fortunate pupils, saddled with an alcoholic father and an indigent mother. But we also see Washington, Jefferson, Lafayette, Greene, Patrick Henry, Francis Marion, and the rest of that brilliant galaxy playing their roles not as historical figures but as men. We see de Kalb's gallant death under a cavalry charge at Camden. We penetrate to the swamp-encircled camp which was Marion's stronghold on the Peedee. We watch the cat-and-mouse game between Cornwallis and Lafayette, which ended in Cornwallis's unlucky stand at Yorktown. Dawn's Early Light is the human story behind our first war for liberty, and of the men and women loving and laughing through it to the dawn of a better world.

Book Artist s Reference Photos the Restored Colonial Area of the City of Williamsburg VA

Download or read book Artist s Reference Photos the Restored Colonial Area of the City of Williamsburg VA written by Dawn Boyer and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artist's Reference Photos: The Restored Colonial Area of the City of Williamsburg, VA If you love the restored colonial district of the City of Williamsburg, Virginia, and if you are an artist looking for strong reference photos, this book is for you! This book over 80 full-color photographs that provide strong visual interpretation of the exterior and interior of the governor's palace for the artists to use fully as a reference for their sketching, illustrations, and painting efforts. This book is made up of photographs taken between 2015 and 2018 by the author / photographer's efforts of documenting architecture in the restored colonial area within the City of Williamsburg, Virginia. During this period, the photos may actually show small differences between the years as the non-profit foundation updated, improved, and added to the beautiful tourist setting. After dozens of trips to the City of Williamsburg, Virginia over decades, and untold numbers of visits to the restored area of the original colonial city, the collection grew to thousands of photos. The difference between these photographs and other photography of the area is these were taken specifically at certain artistic angles and viewpoints that would aesthetically enhance the view of the building or allow the artist to see details of the exteriors or interiors. The photographer's main purpose was to use the photographs as a basis for sketches and drawings for fine art illustrations and pen and ink drawings. Thus the photographs in this book showcase angles and views which the normal tourist or photographer may not have considered. The photographer used a Canon Rebel DSL 35mm camera set on automatic exposure and focus. These photo resources are excellent guides which artists are allowed to use as a basis for their own fine art illustrations of the beautiful restored buildings, streets, and venues. This book is one of a series of artists reference photos by the photographer of the restored colonial area inside the city of Williamsburg, Virginia (check Amazon for other books in this series!). This book and the photographer allows and encourages the fine artist purchasing this book to use any reference photo as a basis upon which to create their own fine art illustrations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 5 of The Williamsburg Series. This is the adventures of the twins Calvert and Camilla Scott from the First World War through 1934. Both of them go overseas, Camilla to act as nurse's aid in the hospitals run by her cousins in London and Gloucestershire. Calvert to serve briefly on the crew of a big gun. Chiefly it is Camilla's story, her futile love for a Frenchman; her involvement in the stormy passions of Jenny and the American who - with Calvert - had managed to survive the destruction of the gun crew, and who nearly lost his life thereafter. The threads of previous stories are fitted into place, gathering momentum, seeming to build up into a love story between the duke's daughter and the poor mechanic. And in the last quarter, death and disaster; a brief interlude between Camilla and a young Nazi; and the story ends with two matings, and the build-up for World War II.

Book excerpt: This addition to the enormously popular Williamsburg series is set largely against the early part of the Second World War in England during the heroic, nerve-racking years prior to the USA's entry. The author amazingly and convincingly recaptures the mood and tempo of the times, as good a study of British and American morale as can be, the exuberance of spirit in which the challenge and the danger was met. And for the audience that has come to know the Day-Sprague family as familiar friends, with their network of inter-marriages, spanning two countries, this Volume 7 of the series is a most welcome read.

Book excerpt: The world according to David Ives is a very add place, and his plays constitute a virtual stress test of the English language -- and of the audience's capacity for disorientation and delight. Ives's characters plunge into black holes called "Philadelphias," where the simplest desires are hilariously thwarted. Chimps named Milton, Swift, and Kafka are locked in a room and made to re-create Hamlet. And a con man peddles courses in a dubious language in which "hello" translates as "velcro" and "fraud" comes out as "freud." At once enchanting and perplexing, incisively intelligent and side-splittingly funny, this original paperback edition of Ives's plays includes "Sure Thing," "Words, Words, Words," "The Universal Language," "Variations on the Death of Trotsky," "The Philadelphia," "Long Ago and Far Away," "Foreplay, or The Art of the Fugue," "Seven Menus," "Mere Mortals," "English Made Simple," "A Singular Kinda Guy," "Speed-the-Play," "Ancient History," and "Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread."

Book excerpt: Learn more about the men who inspired Hamilton: The Musical in this fascinating look at the historical friends turned revolutionary rivals! In curiously parallel lives, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were both orphaned at an early age. Both were brilliant students who attended college--one at Princeton, the other at Columbia--and studied law. Both were young staff officers under General George Washington, and both became war heroes. Politics beckoned them, and each served in the newly formed government of the fledgling nation. Why, then, did these two face each other at dawn in a duel that ended with death for one and harsh criticism for the other? Judith St. George's lively biography, told in alternating chapters, brings to life two complex men who played major roles in the formation of the United States.
