Materials for the volume have been most kindly provided by a number of prominent clergymen, contemporaries of the Rev. Mr. Skiles in the Diocese of North Carolina. Among these may be named the Rev. Dr. Watson, now Bishop Watson of East Carolina, the Rev. Dr. Jarvis Buxton, the Rev. Henry H. Prout, the Rev. Dr. George Wetmore, and the Rev. William Glennie French. To Mr. George N. Evans, the zealous layman, the faithful friend and fellow-labourer of the Rev. Mr. Skiles, the editor is also largely indebted for many details regarding the daily life of the missionary, and the country over which he travelled. In the first book published that treats all of Susan Fenimore Cooper's known writings, preceded by a concise biographical chapter that includes material from Cooper's personal letters, Dr. Rosaly T. Kurth views her literary canon with a wide-ranging lens. In her compelling study, Dr. Kurth uniquely incorporates Cooper's philosophy of environmental stewardship, on which scholars have thus far focused, into an expansive philosophy that includes familial, patriotic, and humanitarian stewardships, thus embracing the human element as well as the environmental. Dr. Kurth's research on the life and works of Cooper dates back to the early 1970s, during which time she discovered nineteen of Cooper's works, and as a result, in 1977, published the first extensive, annotated bibliography of her writings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ravenscroft School, an Episcopal boarding school in Asheville, North Carolina, 1856 to 1901, had three distinct phases. It was first a "Classical and Theological School" (1856-1864) and then, following the Civil War, a Theological Training School and Associate Mission (1868-1900); in 1887 it split into two departments, a Theological Training School/Associate Mission and Ravenscroft High School for Boys (1887-1901). The purview of this book is from the early days of Asheville (1820s) to the building of Joseph Osborne's mansion in the 1840s (which would eventually house the school), through the years of the school's operation, and thence to the mid-20th century when the campus buildings were sold and repurposed. The book concludes with the efforts by historic preservationists in the late 1970s to save the few remaining buildings. The book includes biographical notes on notable alumni and histories of the churches established by the Ravenscroft Associate Mission and Training School.
