Book excerpt: William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) was the outstanding statesman of the Victorian age. He was an MP for over sixty years, a long serving and exceptional Chancellor of the Exchequer and four times Prime Minister. As the leader of the Liberal party over three decades, he personified the values and policies of later Victorian Liberalism. Gladstone, however, was always more than just a politician. He was also a considerable scholar, a dedicated Churchman and had a range of interests and connections that made him, in many respects, the quintessential Victorian. Yet important aspects of Gladstone's life have received relatively little recent attention from historians. This study reappraises Gladstone by focusing on five themes: his reputation; his representation in visual and material culture; his personal life; his role as an official; and the ethical and political basis of his international policies. This collection of original, often multidisciplinary studies, provides new perspectives on Gladstone's public and private life. As such, it illustrates the many-sided nature of his career and the complexities of his personality.

Book On Books and the Housing of Them

Download or read book On Books and the Housing of Them written by W. E. Gladstone and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gladstone, the four times Liberal Prime Minister of Britain loved books almost as much as anything else (possibly more), and in this treatise he describes how one could arrange one's own personal library. Due to his wealth and position in history, his ideas while fascinating, are not really practical for the 21st century, but the book makes for interesting reading.

Book Noble Savages

Download or read book Noble Savages written by Sarah Watling and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *A NEW STATESMAN AND THE TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR* *WINNER OF THE TONY LOTHIAN PRIZE* 'Interesting women have secrets. They also ought to have sisters.' From the beginning of their lives, the Olivier sisters stood out- surprisingly emancipated, strikingly beautiful, markedly determined, and alarmingly 'wild'. Rupert Brooke was said to be in love with all four of them; D. H. Lawrence thought they were frankly 'wrong'; Virginia Woolf found them curiously difficult to read. In this intimate, sweeping biography, Sarah Watling brings the sisters in from the margins, tracing lives that span colonial Jamaica, the bucolic life of Victorian progressives, the frantic optimism of Edwardian Cambridge, the bleakness of two world wars, and a host of evolving philosophies for life over the course of the twentieth century. Noble Savages is a compelling portrait of sisterhood in all its complexities, which rediscovers the lives of four extraordinary women within the varied fortunes of the feminism of their times, while illuminating the battles and ethics of biography itself.

Book The Grand Old Man

Download or read book The Grand Old Man written by Richard B. Cook and published by 1st World Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All history, says Emerson, "resolves itself into the biographies of a few stout and earnest persons." These remarks find exemplification in the life of William Ewart Gladstone, of whom they are pre-eminently true. His recorded life, from the early period of his graduation to his fourth premiership, would embrace in every important respect not only the history of the British Empire, but very largely the international events of every nation of the world for more than half a century. William Ewart Gladstone, M.P., D.C.L., statesman, orator and scholar, was born December 27, 1809, in Liverpool, England. The house in which he was born, number 62 Rodney Street, a commodious and imposing "double-fronted" dwelling of red brick, is still standing. In the neighborhood of the Rodney Street house, and a few years before or after the birth of William E. Gladstone, a number of distinguished persons were born, among them William Roscoe, the writer and philanthropist, John Gibson, the sculptor, Doctor Bickersteth, the late Bishop of Ripon, Mrs. Hemans, the poetess, and Doctor James Martineau, Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy in Manchester New College, and the brother of Harriet Martineau, the authoress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough analysis of the political career of William Gladstone, one of the most intriguing figures in modern British history. 'Gladstone and the Logic of Victorian Politics' captures the incredible richness of Gladstone's political journey, tracing his evolution from Tory defender of a theocratic Anglican state to great reforming Liberal Prime Minister, always prepared to champion the 'masses against the classes'. Each stage in Gladstone's development is assessed in the light of recent historiographical debates and his own fascinating explanations of his conduct.
