Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "William Caperton Richmond Civil War Soldier" is the historical biography of one man's experience during and after the Civil War in West Virginia. William 'Devil Bill' Richmond was the grandson of Revolutionary War soldier William Cody Richmond. He grew up in Virginia and served as a Lieutenant in the 184 Virginia Milita. In 1850, he became a District School Commissioner. When the Civil War broke out, he served in the Union militia from December 20, 1861 until May 20, 1863. Later he joined an independent Union militia company, the State Scouts, which was organized in November of 1864. After the War, Richmond worked at the WV Legislature in Wheeling, and later served for 25 years as a Justice of the Peace. He died in 1897, at the age of 73. This is a great book for West Virginia Civil War fans, and for the Richmond family of West Virginia.

Download or read book Southwest Virginia s Railroad written by Kenneth W. Noe and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close study of one region of Appalachia that experienced economic vitality and strong sectionalism before the Civil War This book examines the construction of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad through southwest Virginia in the 1850s, before the Civil War began. The building and operation of the railroad reoriented the economy of the region toward staple crops and slave labor. Thus, during the secession crisis, southwest Virginia broke with northwestern Virginia and embraced the Confederacy. Ironically, however, it was the railroad that brought waves of Union raiders to the area during the war

Book The Botanic Garden and My Old Kentucky Plays

Download or read book The Botanic Garden and My Old Kentucky Plays written by Richard Cavendish and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky. Known today for its bluegrass, horse racing, and bourbon; it’s very name, embedded in Iroquois history, means Land of Tomorrow. The song birds are the sweetest, thoroughbreds fleetest, wrote James Mulligan, “The landscape is the grandest--And politics—the damnedest In Kentucky.” It’s a hard look that we must face at European settlers, frightened by differences in heritage, religion, and skin, unable to respect the beauty in other races. They did not understand the sexual orientation of God’s creation. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," wrote George Santayana. We romanticize the old days maybe because they are behind us and can no longer harm us. And from the good that was there, we build a better tomorrow. Here are five historical dramas of Kentucky: The Botanic Garden Horace Holly arrives in Kentucky with dreams to create his own university which is deemed to be the Harvard of the West. The faculty he chooses includes an eccentric European botanist who believes that every great university must have its own botanical garden. Dreams collide within the struggles between religion, government, and ambition. A play about Constantine S. Rafinesque and Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Sabbath of the Soul Three weary travelers meet one evening at a railroad station awaiting arrival of the train carrying the one person most influential to them. Remembrances of this one exceptional life help them come to terms with their own mortality and purpose. A play about the life of Emily H. Tubman and Frankfort, Kentucky. Emma of Elmwood An architect, hired to demolish and replace a beloved house, is haunted into rebuilding his own life. A play about Emma P. Watts and Eastern Kentucky University of Richmond, Kentucky. The Dust of Summer A woman imprisoned by her domestic life discovers a runaway soldier seeking refuge from himself, both trapped between courage and duty. A play about Pleasant View Farm and The Battle of Richmond in Madison County, Kentucky. The Two Villages After years of engagement and unable to set a date for a wedding, a struggling painter is confronted by his fiancé as they journey to understand the obstacles that have plagued their relationship. Being true to one’s art comes with a price. A play about Kentucky’s own impressionistic painter Paul Sawyer of Frankfort, Kentucky.

Book excerpt: Kent Hollingsworth captures the flavor and atmosphere of the Sport of Kings in the dramatic account of the development of the Thoroughbred in Kentucky. Ranging from frontier days, when racing was conducted in open fields as horse-to-horse challenges between proud owners, to the present, when a potential Triple Crown champion may sell for millions of dollars, The Kentucky Thoroughbred considers ten outstanding stallions that dominated the shape of racing in their time as representing the many eras of Kentucky Thoroughbred breeding. No less colorful are his accounts of the owners, breeders, trainers, and jockeys associated with these Thoroughbreds, a group devoted to a sport filled with high adventure and great hazards. First published in 1976, this popular Kentucky classic has been expanded and brought up to date in this new edition.
