Book A Longing for Wide and Unknown Things

Download or read book A Longing for Wide and Unknown Things written by Maren Meinhardt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander von Humboldt was the most admired scientist of his day. But the achievements for which he was most celebrated in his lifetime always fell short of perfection. When he climbed the Chimborazo, then believed to be the highest mountain in the world, he did not quite reach the top; he established the existence of the Casiquiare canal, between the great water systems of the Orinoco and the Amazon, but this had been well known to local people; and his magisterial work, Cosmos, was left unfinished. This was no coincidence. Humboldt's pursuit of an all-encompassing, immersive approach to science was a way of finding limits: of nature and of the scientist's own self. A Longing for Wide and Unknown Things portrays a scientific life lived in the era of German Romanticism - a time of radical change, where the focus on the individual placed a new value on feeling, and the pursuit of personal desires. As Humboldt himself admitted, he 'would have sailed to the remotest South Seas, even if it hadn't fulfilled any scientific purpose whatever'.

Book Gabriele Von B low Daughter of Wilhelm Von Humboldt

Download or read book Gabriele Von B low Daughter of Wilhelm Von Humboldt written by Clara Nordlinger and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gabriele Von Bulow; Daughter of Wilhelm Von Humboldt: A Memoir Compiled From the Family Papers of Wilhelm Von Humboldt and His Children, 1791-1887 The subject of the accompanying memoir, Gabriele von Billow, was a member of a noble German family, which became illustrious in the persons of Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, the former of whom was Gabriele's father. It is not to be wondered at that, coming from such a stock, she should have been endowed with talents and cultivation entitling her life to preservation in biographical form. The deep interest which the work occasioned on its appearance in Germany amply justified the anticipations of those friends who were already acquainted with her life and letters. Among these was the present Grand Duchess of Baden, sister of the Emperor Frederick, and we learn from the preface to the German edition that the book was undertaken at the suggestion of her Royal Highness, to whom indeed it is dedicated. It was at first intended merely to provide a lasting memorial of a charming woman of line character for her relatives, friends, and descendants. But as Frau von Billow's high position gave her a wide outlook over contemporary politics, and brought her into close association with noted men of her time, it seemed likely that a narrative of her Life might have an interest for a more extended public. Book Expanding the Lexicon

Download or read book Expanding the Lexicon written by Sabine Arndt-Lappe and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Book Elements of Structural Syntax

Download or read book Elements of Structural Syntax written by Lucien Tesnière and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume appears now finally in English, sixty years after the death of its author, Lucien Tesnière. It has been translated from the French original into German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, and now at long last into English as well. The volume contains a comprehensive approach to the syntax of natural languages, an approach that is foundational for an entire stream in the modern study of syntax and grammar. This stream is known today as dependency grammar (DG). Drawing examples from dozens of languages, many of which he was proficient in, Tesnière presents insightful analyses of numerous phenomena of syntax. Among the highlights are the concepts of valency and head-initial vs. head-final languages. These concepts are now taken for granted by most modern theories of syntax, even by phrase structure grammars, which represent, in a sense, the opposite sort of approach to syntax from what Tesnière was advocating.
