Book excerpt: SHE WAS RIPE FOR SEDUCTION If she hadn't been absolutely desperate, Margaret McLoughlin never would have hired the very rogue who'd wronged her family to guide her through perilous bandit territory...and wouldn't now be standing face to face with the bare-chested scoundrel with the six-gun strapped to his muscular thigh and his insolent gaze hotly raking her body! But her mother was trapped in the legendary Copper Canyons, and Rafe Delgado was the only man alive who could get her safely out. So the gently-bred innocent would just have to ignore the sinful half-Spaniard's seductive charms, refuse to grant him even one kiss and just pray he never learned her shameful secret: that she burned for him with a fiery yearning only he could satisfy! HE WAS READY FOR LOVE Let the lady think he was leading her into Mexico for the money. Rafe didn't need any starchy schoolteacher asking a lot of dangerous questions...especially with the country on the brink of war. He'd take her where she wanted to go--and take care that she never discovered his other identity: as El Aguila, Mexican savior! But the deeper they ventured into treacherous territory, the more the hot-blooded, onetime revolutionary craved the azure-eyed enchantress's exquisite caress. Soon, he'd sweep her into his searing embrace and plunder her hidden treasures...with a passion that would make her his for the taking--now and forever!!

Book excerpt: PASSION TEMPTED HER Charity McLoughlin had gotten herself into another mess. Her wealthy family had disowned her, her purse was empty—and worst of all, she'd been tricked into smuggling Texas silver into Mexico. Now the law was after her. She wasn't sure whether being abducted by a ruggedly handsome stranger who called himself Hawk meant her fortunes were looking up or down. The one thing she didn't doubt was the fiery attraction she felt for this hard-muscled man. Perhaps she wouldn't try to get away just yet. Instead, maybe for just one night, she would surrender to the raging desires that his slightest touch stirred in her . . . DESIRE ENSLAVED HIM David Fierce Hawk had decided long ago that he'd take one of the McLoughlin daughters as his wife because of the kindness and beauty he'd seen in their mother. But he wasn't sure he wanted this daughter—Charity, the blue-eyed hellcat he'd agreed to bring back to the family fold. She was certainly in a good deal of trouble. And Hawk had been betrayed by those he'd tried to help before, including his Osage Indian tribesmen. But for now, he was willing to forget the future. He was alone with Charity under the starry Texas skies, and his lustful thoughts could not be denied. He'd not pass up this chance to twine his hands through her glorious sable locks, and sample the lush pleasures that this wild and lovely woman offered. . . . Book excerpt: Richard Judd and Christopher Beach define the environmental imagination as the attempt to secure 'a sense of freedom, permanence, and authenticity through communion with nature.' The desire for this connection is based on ideals about nature, wilderness, and the livable landscape that are personal, variable, and often contradictory. Judd and Beach are interested in the public expression of these ideals in post-World War II environmental politics. Arguing that the best way to study the relationship between popular values and politics is through local and regional records, they focus on Maine and Oregon, states both rich in natural beauty and environmentalist traditions, but distinct in their postwar economic growth. Natural States reconstructs the environmental imagination from public commentary, legislative records, and other documents. Judd and Beach trace important divisions within the environmental movement, noting that they were balanced by a consistent, civic-minded vision of environmental goods shared by all. They demonstrate how tensions from competing ideals sustained the movement, contributed to its successes, but also limited its achievements. In the process, they offer insight into the character of the broader environmental movement as it emerged from the interplay of local, state, and national politics. The study ends in the 1970s when spectacular legislative achievements at the national level were masking a decline in mainstream civic engagement in state politics. The authors note the rise of the private ecotopia and the increasing complexity in the way Americans viewed their connections with the natural world. Yet, today, despite wide variations in beliefs and lifestyles, a majority of Americans still consider themselves to be environmentalists. In Natural States, environmental politics emerges less as a conflict between people who do and do not value nature, and more as a debate about the way people define and then chose to live with nature. In their attempt to place the passion for nature within a changing political and cultural context, Judd and Beach shed light on the ways that ideals unify and divide the environmental movement and act as the source of its enduring popularity.
