This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild fungi have beautiful shapes, colours, some with sweet distinctive smell and uniqueness, which play an enormous contribution in many aspects of our life. Little is known about the species diversity and distribution of wild fungi in Malaysia in spite of knowing that there are enormous species to be discovered and documented. This book is to share knowledge and photos of the fungi kingdom found in Sabah. The species were photographed in their natural habitat intended to show the variety of colours, shapes and uniqueness in their respective natural habitats. It will create awareness on the diversity and distribution of wild fungi, research opportunities in the field of mycology in Malaysia and simply to instil love for nature. Hopefully, it will also create networking for collaboration in the research, publication and identification for the wild fungi of Sabah.

Download or read book The Neglected Ape written by Biruté M.F. Galdikas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-02-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orangutan is the most highly endangered species of great ape. Orangutans are threatened by deforestation, poaching, the illegal pet trade, and the isolation and fragmen tation of dwindling wild populations. Their conservation is impeded by certain aspects of their ecology (e. g. , a rain forest habitat) and certain features of their life history (e. g. , an eight-to twelve-year interbirth interval). Added to the U. S. Endangered Species List in 1970, the orangutan is now clearly on the road to extinction. The number of wild orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra is currently estimated to have decreased to between 12,300 and 20,571 individuals. Only 2% of original orangutan habitat is protected and some of these areas are now being destroyed. Clearly, attention to ecology, demography, censusing, rehabilitation, and conservation is essential if the orangutan is to survive in the wild beyond the next century. The protection of orangutans is a complex, multifaceted problem, involving such pressing issues as human poverty, overpopulation, and the economic development of Southeast Asia. Although the orangutan has been placed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), more orangutans were sold illegally in Taiwan between 1990 and 1993 than are housed in all the world's zoos. In the past, scientific and public attention has centered on the African apes. For this reason, the sole Asian great ape, the orangutan, has been called the "neglected ape.

Download or read book The Genus Schefflera in Sabah Malaysian Borneo written by Aida Shafreena Ahmad Puad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This...book describes 32 Schefflera taxa, including 29 species, from the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. Prior to this work, only seven species of Schefflera in Sabah had published names and none had been described from the state in the last 100 years. Thus, this treatment provides a long overdue contribution to our understanding of the genus, in particular, and the Sabah flora, in general. Beyond including an enumeration of the species of Schefflera in Sabah, introductory material on both the history and systematics of the genus and natural history of Sabah is provided. Numerous photographic images and line drawings are provided to illustrate the taxa and their distinguishing characteristics. In addition, distribution maps document the occurrence of each species and variety."--jacket flap.

Download or read book Wild Cats of the World written by Mel Sunquist and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that European royalty once used cheetahs to hunt deer, or that caracals can capture birds by leaping six and a half feet straight up into the air from a standing start? Have you ever wondered whether domestic cats really do land on their feet when they fall, or how Canada lynx can stalk their prey in the winter without falling through the deep snow? Wild Cats of the World is a treasure trove of answers to questions like these, and many others, for anyone who's interested in learning more about the world's felids, including the ones with whom we share our homes. Mel and Fiona Sunquist have spent more than a decade gathering information about cats from every available source, many of them quite difficult to find, including scientific papers, descriptions of hunts, archeological findings, observations by naturalists and travelers, reports from government agencies, and newsletters from a wide variety of organizations. Weaving information from these sources together with their own experiences observing wild cats around the world, the Sunquists have created the most comprehensive reference on felids available. Each of their accounts of the 36 species of cat contains a description of the cat, including human interactions with it, as well as detailed data on its distribution, ecology and behavior, status in the wild, and efforts to conserve it. Numerous photographs, including more than 40 in full color, illustrate these accounts. Ranging from the two-pound black-footed cat to the five-hundred-pound tiger, and from the African serval with its satellite-dish ears to the web-footed fishing cat of Asia, Wild Cats of the World will fascinate and educate felid fans of any stripe (or spot).

Download or read book Managing Natural Wealth written by Jeffrey R. Professor Vincent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkably rich natural environment of Malaysia attracts the interest of both industry and the environmental community. Managing Natural Wealth analyzes major natural resource and environmental policy issues in the country during the 1970s and 1980s-a period of profound socioeconomic change, rapid depletion of natural resources, and the emergence of serious problems with pollution. Managing Natural Wealth is an important up-date to Environment and Development in a Resource-Rich Economy: Malaysia under the New Economic Policy. First published in hardcover in 1997, this pathbreaking book emphasized economics as a source for analyzing the issues involved in environmental and natural resource management in developing countries. The access that Jeffrey Vincent and Rozali Mohamed Ali and the contributing authors had to unpublished data and key decisionmakers made their account an essential reference for policymakers and researchers in Malaysia and throughout the globe. Managing Natural Wealth includes a review of key developments since the 1990s by S. Robert Aiken and Colin H. Leigh, two geographers with a long-standing interest in environmental change in Malaysia and an understanding of the institutional context of its environmental policy that is unmatched in the scholarly community.
