Book The Eradication of Bindweed Or Wild Morning glory

Download or read book The Eradication of Bindweed Or Wild Morning glory written by Herbert Randolph Cox and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms "bindweed" and "wild morning-glory" are rather indiscriminately applied to the various species of the genus of plants known by botanists as Convolvulus that are of importance as weeds. In certain limited sections other common names are used to refer to these species, such as gopher vine, pea vine, and wild sweet potato. By far the larger number of these plants are classified under the two species Convolvulus sepium and C. arvensis, the former a native of this country and the latter an introduction from Europe. There are a few other species, principally Convolvulus sepium repens and C. Californicus that occur as weeds in certain regions. The former is a variety of Convolvulus sepium, but is often referred to as C. repens. In many parts of the country these species rank among the worst of all the weeds that trouble the farmer, and in some regions they are by far the worst. Being perennials, the propagate not only by their seeds, but also by their underground parts. It is the latter character especially that makes them such formidable enemies to the tiller of the soil. The common or cultivated morning-glory, with the large bell-shape flowers of various colors, is sometimes found in fields where it has escaped cultivation. This is an annual not difficult to control and should not be mistaken for a species of convolvulus.

Book Wild Grass and Morning Blossoms Gathered at Dusk

Download or read book Wild Grass and Morning Blossoms Gathered at Dusk written by Xun Lu and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant new translation of the short improvisational fiction and memoirs of Lu Xun, the father of modern Chinese literature. This captivating translation assembles two volumes by Lu Xun, the founder of modern Chinese literature and one of East Asia’s most important thinkers at the turn of the twentieth century. Wild Grass and Morning Blossoms Gathered at Dusk represent a pinnacle of achievement alongside Lu Xun’s famed short stories. In Wild Grass, a collection of twenty-three experimental pieces, surreal scenes come alive through haunting language and vivid imagery. These are landscapes populated by ghosts, talking animals, and sentient plants, where a protagonist might come face-to-face with their own corpse. By depicting the common struggle of real and imagined creatures to survive in an inhospitable world, Lu Xun asks the deceptively simple question, “What does it mean to be human?” Alongside Wild Grass is Morning Blossoms Gathered at Dusk, a memoir in eight essays capturing the literary master’s formative years and featuring a motley cast of dislocated characters—children, servants, outcasts, the dead and the dying. Giving voice to vulnerable subjects and depicting their hopes and despair as they negotiate an unforgiving existence, Morning Blossoms affirms the value of all beings and elucidates a central predicament of the human condition: feeling without a home in the world. Beautifully translated and introduced by Eileen J. Cheng, these lyrical texts blur the line between autobiography and literary fiction. Together the two collections provide a new window into Lu Xun’s mind and his quest to find beauty and meaning in a cruel and unjust world.

Book excerpt: When one woman goes missing in the Colorado wilderness, another becomes bent on discovering her whereabouts in this unforgettably moving, bestselling literary debut. Driven to spend days alone in the wilderness, Amy Raye Latour, mother of two, is compelled by the quiet and the rush of nature. But this time, her venture into a remote area leaves her on the verge of the precarious edge that she’s flirted with her entire life. When Amy Raye doesn’t return to camp, ranger Pru Hathaway and her dog respond to the missing person call. After an unexpected snowfall and few leads, the operation turns into a search and recovery. As the novel follows Amy Raye and Pru in alternating threads, Breaking Wild assumes the white-knuckled pace of a thriller, laying bare Amy Raye’s ultimate reckoning with the secrets of her life and Pru’s dogged pursuit of the woman who, against all odds, she believes she can find.
