This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States In connection with the work of drug-plant Investigations many inquiries are received from various parts of the country asking for a list of the drug-producing plants of the regions concerned and for information as to the parts of the plants used in medicine, etc. It being impossible to comply with requests of this nature in any satis factory way, Miss Henkel was asked to compile a list of the drug plants of this country, using as a basis the catalogues of dealers in crude drugs and the standard works on systematic botany. It has seemed from an inspection of these lists and of much current phar maceutical literature that the recent changes in botanical nomenclature have succeeded one another too rapidly to permit the drug dealer and the pharmacist to keep pace with them. This has resulted in consider able confusion in regard to botanical names, and in some cases in the matter of the common names of drug-producing plants. In such a list as that herewith presented the opportunity for helping to clear up this situation has seemed worth improving. The recent appearance of the new Pharmacopoeia, in which the botanical nomenclature has been revised, has seemed to emphasize the desirability of making this attempt, since the names in the case of official plants will be fairly definitely fixed among pharmacists for the next ten years. In the accompanying list the pharmacopoeial names are given and a revision of the nomenclature of the unofficial drugs is also presented. Mr. Frederick V. Coville, Botanist, has kindly revised the botanical names used in this publication. It is hoped that this compilation will tend to unify usage among those who have to do with crude drugs and drug plants. Book Useful Wild Plants of the United States and Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Useful Wild Plants of the United States and Canada Classic Reprint written by Charles Francis Saunders and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Useful Wild Plants of the United States and Canada All the familiar vegetables and fruits of our kitchen gardens, as well as the cereals of our fields, were once wild plants; or, to put it more accurately, they are the descendants, improved by cultivation and selection, of ancestors as untamed in their way as the primitive men and women who first learned the secret of their nutritiousness. Many of these - as, for example, the potato, Indian corn, certain sorts of beans and squashes, and the tomato - are of New World origin; and the purpose of this volume is to call attention to certain other useful plants, particularly those available as a source of human meat and drink, that are to-day growing mid in the woods, waters and open country of the United States. Though now largely neglected, many of these plants formed in past years an important element in the diet of the aborigines, who were vegetarians to a greater extent than is generally suspected, and whose patient investigation and ingenuity have opened the way to most that we know of the economic possibilities of our indigenous flora. Book A Synopsis Or Systematic Catalogue of the Medicinal Plants of the United States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synopsis, or Systematic Catalogue of the Medicinal Plants of the United States In this synopsis, I have strictly followed the arrangement of the orders, and the genera and species under them, of Dr. Gray's excel lent Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States. Torrey and Gray's Flora of North America, Torrey's Flora of New York, and Wood's Botanical class-book, have mainly the same arrange ment. Botanical references are given to most of the older and original works on American botany, and to a few later ones in which good detailed descriptions are found; and all the important synonymes are mentioned, so there can be no doubt as to the identity of the plant. The references may appear to some as needlessly extended; but to a botanist, they give, at a glance, a kind of history, or rather as it were a genealogy of the species - by whom first named and de scribed - the principal works in chronological order in which it has since been described, and the changes of name, if any, it has undergone. Book American Medical Botany

Download or read book American Medical Botany written by Jacob Bigelow and published by . This book was released on 1817 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three volumes of Bigelow's book each originally appeared in two fascicules, making a total of six fascicules in all. Because sets of hand-colored engravings had already been prepared for Vol. I, fascicule 1, Bigelow used them to complete the earliest copies of that part in order to meet his publication deadlines, adding the color prints as soon as the stone-printing process was perfected. Wolfe declares that "there are two states of the first number in American medical botany, one having hand-colored plates and the other having color printed plates." In addition there are some copies which have a combination of hand-colored and color-printed plates in volume 1, fascicule 1.--J. Norman, 2006.

Book A Catalogue of the Medicinal Plants Indigenous and Exotic Growing in the State of New York

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Medicinal Plants Indigenous and Exotic Growing in the State of New York written by Charles A. Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Medicinal Plants, Indigenous and Exotic, Growing in the State of New-York: With a Brief Account of Their Composition and Medical Properties The whole number of flowering plants hitherto discovered in 11115 state, according to Prof. Torrey, is about 1450 species. Ofthese about 1200 are herbaceous, and 150 ornamental. We have 250 species Of woody plants, including eighty that attain the size of trees. There are also about 150 species of plants that are known to possess medicinal properties. Of exotics, now naturalized, we have 160 species, many of which have probably been introduced with grain, and other agricul tural products, from abroad. Of such, are nearly all the weeds which prove so troublesome to the farmer. To the same source we are also indebted for many of our useful species, as most of our different grasses, which spring up spontaneously on every hand. Of Ferns we have about sixty species belonging to the Flora of' the state, some of which are medicinal. The Male Fem does not grow within the limits of the state. Our Masses, Liverworts, Lichens, and Sea-weeds, have as yet been but very imperfectly investigated though many of them would undoubtedly furnish valuable resources to the me. Dical man. When these have become more fully known, we shall no longer send to Iceland, Ireland, and the East Indies, for mucilaginous mosses, and other remedies of this class. Our Fungi are almost innu merable, constituting, probably, at least 3000 species, but few ofwhich have been thoroughly studied. Here is a wide field for such as wish to distinguish themselves by making discoveries in a term incognita. At present our knowledge scarcely suffices to enable us to distinguish such as are poisonous from those which are edible and nutritious. Where is the genius, which is to illustrate this dark region? Where the man, whose name is to be connected with this branch of natural science, in all future time? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
