Book excerpt: The tradition of anti-feminism in medieval literature presents itself in Geoffrey Chaucer's Wife of Bath's Tale. In her prologue, The Wife recounts her marriage with her fifth husband Jankyn, telling how she gained sovereignty over him by tearing pages out of his book of "wikked wyves." Included in Jankyn's book are the stories of "wicked" women in literature, providing a chronological range illustrating a discourse of gynophobia. The inclusion of the medical text Trotula among the "wikked wyves" in Jankyn's book is often overlooked by scholars and deserves more emphasis. To understand Trotula's inclusion in Jankyn's book, we must examine how Trota, a twelfth-century medical practitioner, ended up among Jankyn's "wikked wyves." In examining the contingent nature of textual authority, we can see how clerical medieval misogyny and misogamy ultimately manifested in the publication of many witch hunter manuals in the fifteenth century, namely one of the most infamous, the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches). The Malleus provides a parallel in genealogy for the Wife's text, as it presents a series of ideas that allowed for the demonization of women in the medieval period and beyond. By examining each of these texts, we can trace a history of women reclaiming the integrity of their autonomy in a world of antifeminism and antifeminist literature. This essay aims to expose the contingencies of one book being born from another book, where authority is occluded and never examined or rediscovered.

Drawing on ideas from deconstruction, psychoanalysis, and social theory, Leicester proposes that Chaucer can lead us beyond the impasses of contemporary literary theory and suggests new approaches to questions of agency, representation, and the gendered imagination. Leicester reads the Canterbury Tales as radically voiced and redefines concepts like "self" and "character" in the light of current discussions of language and subjectivity. He argues for Chaucer's disenchanted practical understanding of the constructed character of the self, gender, and society, building his case through close readings of the Pardoner's, Wife of Bath's, and Knight's tales. His study is among the first major treatments of Chaucer's poetry utilizing the techniques of contemporary literary theory and provides new models for reading the poems while revising many older views of them and of Chaucer's relation to his age.
