Book Wikked Wyves Women and Witchcraft A Study of the Inclusion of the Trotula in Jankyn s Book of Wikked Wyves

Download or read book Wikked Wyves Women and Witchcraft A Study of the Inclusion of the Trotula in Jankyn s Book of Wikked Wyves written by Priscilla Deana Contreras and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tradition of anti-feminism in medieval literature presents itself in Geoffrey Chaucer's Wife of Bath's Tale. In her prologue, The Wife recounts her marriage with her fifth husband Jankyn, telling how she gained sovereignty over him by tearing pages out of his book of "wikked wyves." Included in Jankyn's book are the stories of "wicked" women in literature, providing a chronological range illustrating a discourse of gynophobia. The inclusion of the medical text Trotula among the "wikked wyves" in Jankyn's book is often overlooked by scholars and deserves more emphasis. To understand Trotula's inclusion in Jankyn's book, we must examine how Trota, a twelfth-century medical practitioner, ended up among Jankyn's "wikked wyves." In examining the contingent nature of textual authority, we can see how clerical medieval misogyny and misogamy ultimately manifested in the publication of many witch hunter manuals in the fifteenth century, namely one of the most infamous, the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches). The Malleus provides a parallel in genealogy for the Wife's text, as it presents a series of ideas that allowed for the demonization of women in the medieval period and beyond. By examining each of these texts, we can trace a history of women reclaiming the integrity of their autonomy in a world of antifeminism and antifeminist literature. This essay aims to expose the contingencies of one book being born from another book, where authority is occluded and never examined or rediscovered.

Book The Disenchanted Self

Download or read book The Disenchanted Self written by H. Marshall Leicester Jr. and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the "dramatic principle" in the Canterbury Tales, of whether and how the individual tales relate to the pilgrims who are supposed to tell them, has long been a central issue in the interpretation of Chaucer's work. Drawing on ideas from deconstruction, psychoanalysis, and social theory, Leicester proposes that Chaucer can lead us beyond the impasses of contemporary literary theory and suggests new approaches to questions of agency, representation, and the gendered imagination. Leicester reads the Canterbury Tales as radically voiced and redefines concepts like "self" and "character" in the light of current discussions of language and subjectivity. He argues for Chaucer's disenchanted practical understanding of the constructed character of the self, gender, and society, building his case through close readings of the Pardoner's, Wife of Bath's, and Knight's tales. His study is among the first major treatments of Chaucer's poetry utilizing the techniques of contemporary literary theory and provides new models for reading the poems while revising many older views of them and of Chaucer's relation to his age. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book excerpt: The three medieval texts that make up Jankyn's Book of Wikked Wyves have formed a vital part of Chaucerian research for more than half a century. Integrated here for the first time, these texts now form a cornerstone volume of the Chaucer Library series. Near the end of her prologue, Chaucer's Wife of Bath tells how her fifth husband, Jankyn, a clerk of Oxford, taunted her by reading from a collection of antifeminist tracts. The contents of Jankyn's book include three texts that enjoyed wide distribution in the later Middle Ages: Walter Map's "Dissuasio Valerii," Theophrastus's "De Nuptiis," and Jerome's "Adversus Jovinianum." The first two are reproduced in their entirety in this volume, with selections from the third. The editors examine Jankyn's book from many angles, including the extensive manuscript sources from which it may be reconstructed, background information for its literary appreciation, and Chaucer's use of the materials. The publication of this volume, the fourth in the Chaucer Library, represents a major event for medievalists.

Book Medieval English Prose for Women

Download or read book Medieval English Prose for Women written by Bella Millett and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1992 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ancrene Wisse, a guide for female recluses written in the West Midlands in the early thirteenth century, and the closely related religious works of the `Katherine Group', offer a vivid insight into the religious life of the time, and their rich and varied prose style blends Latin and native English stylistic traditions with remarkable skill and assurance. The difficulty of their language, however, has made them largely inaccessible except to experts in Middle English, and this edition is designed to introduce them to a wider audience, including undergraduates with limited experience of Middle English and specialists in other disciplines, particularly history, theology, and women's studies. It provides a representative selection (the last two parts of Ancrene Wisse, and three complete works from the Katherine Group, Hali Meithhad, Sawles Warde, and Seinte Margarete) in new and readable critical texts, with a general introduction, notes, a select glossary, and interleavedtranslations.

Book excerpt: These two timeless epics by the ancient Greek poet—each translated by a world-renowned author—have captured the Western imagination for millennia. The Iliad: Alexander Pope “works miracles” in this beautiful verse translation of Homer’s epic poem set near the end of the Trojan War. It centers on a quarrel between the invading Greek king Agamemnon and his greatest asset in battle, the warrior Achilles. From this conflict, Homer weaves a tale of warring nations, vengeful gods, and the terrible consequences of prideful rage (The New York Times). The Odyssey: The Trojan War is over and Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, embarks to return home. But he is cursed by the god Poseidon to wander the perilous earth for ten years before reaching his destination. Homer’s epic adventure of survival by wit and battling mythical creatures is presented here in a stirring prose translation by Samuel Butler.

Book The Poet and the Prince

Download or read book The Poet and the Prince written by Alessandro Barchiesi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fresh assessment of Ovid's fascinating poem Fasti, Alessandro Barchiesi provides a new vision of the interaction between Ovid and the renowned ruler Augustus. Fasti, a poem about the holidays and feast days of the Roman calendar, was written while Ovid was in Rome and revised while he was in exile on the barbarian frontier, banished by Augustus from the cultured society of Rome. Ovid's work in exile evinces complicated motives; he addresses Augustus and begs him to lift the despised exile, but at the same time covertly critiques Augustus's "New Rome." Although recent scholarship has concentrated on the oppositions between poet and ruler revealed in Ovid's work, Barchiesi's analysis transcends the opposition of pro-Augustan or anti-Augustan readings. In a lively, vigorous narrative that relies on close textual analysis, Barchiesi underscores the important poetic choices as well as the political considerations made by Ovid in Fasti. Ultimately, his analysis leads us to a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between patrons and poets. Both scholars and general readers will find a newly meaningful and interesting Ovid in these pages. Translated with revisions from Il poeta e il principe: Ovido e il discorso Augusteo (1994).
